MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Seven people are in custody after a sweep by law enforcement authorities in connection with an alleged plot against targets that may have included the Sears Tower, officials told CNN on Thursday.
Officials said no weapons or bomb-making materials had been found in the searches in the Miami area by FBI and state and local law enforcement officials. The city is under no imminent threat, according to the FBI.
Law enforcement sources told CNN that the arrests disrupted what may have been the early stages of a domestic terrorist plot to attack the Sears Tower in Chicago, Illinois, the FBI building in Miami, and possibly other targets. (Watch details of the raids -- 2:53)
The 110-story Sears Tower is the world's third-tallest building and the tallest in North America.
Sources told CNN that the arrests culminated a monthslong undercover operation. The suspects believed they were dealing with an al Qaeda operative, but the person was actually a government informant, the sources said.
Documents related to the investigation have been sealed.
One of the arrests was made before Thursday, officials said.
The FBI said one search warrant was executed in a warehouse near a housing project in Liberty City, a predominantly black and low-income area of Miami.
Cedric Thomas, a co-owner of Thomas Produce Market, told the Miami Herald that the area around his store was teeming with federal agents.
''There is a ton of guys in uniforms moving around, blocking the streets. I'm not sure what they are doing,'' Thomas told the newspaper.
"We are conducting a number of arrests and searches, and we'll have more about that when the operation is completed, probably tomorrow morning," FBI Director Robert Mueller told CNN's Larry King in an interview broadcast Thursday night.
"Because it's an ongoing operation, we really can't get into details," Mueller said. "But whenever we undertake an operation like this, we would not do it without the approval of a judge. We've got search warrants and arrest warrants and the like. ...."
In a statement, the U.S. attorney's office in Miami said federal, state and local agencies made the arrests in connection with a domestic "terrorist-related matter."
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will hold a news conference Friday regarding the raids.

LIES!

excellent!

They are simply misunderstood and should be shown some sympathy. The ACLU should get them at least 25 lawyers to help. Also they should eb released on thier on recognicance(sp?) and no bail at all.

I bet there was some racial profiling involved. These are obviously misunderstood Islamic choirboys. Remember Bush is the real terrorist :rofl

^ What's with all the sarcasm?
I mean... it's a good thing that you're fighting them over there, so you don't have to fight them in ****ing Miami! How did these guys escape the hermetically sealed terrorist zone known as Iraq?! Man do they ever suck at following directions.
There. :)
But seriously - good job FBI. :aok

but, but, they were checking my phone calls, where are my "freedoms".
-
That's a good question. They're getting harder to spot.
But, ah... what's with y'all's reaction to this? It's a good thing..... no?
-
I tell you....I certainly hope they were read their rights in whatever language it is they speak. It would be a perfect motion for the ACLU that they were read in the english language and didn't fully understand what they were being told. So any info. that was gotten from the would be inadmisable in court and must be thrown out.
Also , I trust theat the FBI were gentle and didn't make any racial comments or use any type of profanity.
If the FBI made one screw up here I hope they are all taken to jail. I hope there is a (PC phrase) "Rush to judgement" and they are fired , stripped of all their pensions and sentenced to at least 20 years. Stupid FBI agents can't speak arabic. I'm sure they profiled them. I'm positive.
GET THE ACLU ON THE HORN NOW !!!! We'll teach these blasted american agents. MORONS. Screwing up and arresting these misunderstood youth.

Holy smokes.
This thread has gone bat**** before it even started. :D

To be honest guys, this is great news for me. I live in the Chicago area and to see our proud Sear Tower a target of attacks would worry us to no end. Seeing the FBI and the authorities capture 7 inconcievably evil people that plotted to take down the tower is a relief.
The last time I was worried about an attack was on 9/11, when I believed that they were going to attack all major business buildings in major cities. I heard a fighter jet break the sound barrier over my town and that brought a lot of worries since we believed that there was a plane out there that Mr. bin Laden had with the Sears Tower name on it.
I have family that work close to the Sears Tower, and I'm glad to see action being down in capturing these cowards.

sears tower....didn't that used to be a euphamism for the result of looking at the ladies underware section of the sears catologue? thats a target? thank g-d i get my boners from tentacle pron

They escaped by not being from the middle east, but from Miami and Haiti.
It's a special talent some terrorists have. The FBI trapped them by posing as Al Qaeda (From the Middle east.) :noid

I agree with Yeager on this one. Put them on the rack.
What's interesting with these idiots is that they started from nothing. Insofar as we have information, these were just a bunch of disaffected muslims. They decided to become an arm of terror pretty much out of the blue. Maybe cause they couldnt get laid.
But starting from ZERO, they managed to get contacts and started a campaign to get $50k and put together some logistics towards making contact outside their little world. And it's those initial pointers that are of interest. Websites, maybe? How do you get a terror plot going when you grew up in Miami and know jack about terror plots?
Having grown up in comfy America, I doubt they'd last long in the chair with the baseball bat to the knees. These guys may actually yield some intel.
And as a Chicago native, I can say that - having never been to NYC - I tried to visualize what was happening on 9/11 by imagining the Sears Tower falling down. Until you've stood on Wacker and Jackson and looked straight up at the thing - you have no idea how massive it is. You think you can imagine it, but until you get there does it hit you. Trying to imagine that thing coming down at once is unimaginable. And it almost certainly has the same structural problems that the WTC did. The metal suspension is somewhat offset by the fact its a series of columns, so it may not have come straight down.
What I'd like to know is how the Feds got the intel. Did they use the internet surveillance tools or the data from the phone providers?

Here's a site explaining how Hizbollah gets sites hosted, etc (http://www.internet-haganah.co.il/harchives/003125.html). I did read though that recently ServePath stopped hosting their sites after alot of local public pressure (wtfg San Franciscans!).
Any number of ways you can leech info from their website though. If I were in the NSA, I'd pound away on their servers with good ol' script-kiddy attacks until one eventually worked. Get root, and start making copies of all usage statistics. Illegal? Most likely... but it can form an effective jumping off point.
The hard part is getting more ip information from non-extradition countries. That's why it's popular to route through them. That means you have to methodically work your way backwards rooting boxes & hijacking routers as you go. Possible, just difficult and time consuming... and probably also illegal as hell.

I said it before and I say it again, the next terrorist attack in the United States will be perpetrated by Americans. Just like in London which was carried out by British citizens.
That's the real threat, internal and probably almost invisible.
I think you will also find that the Intelligence services were probably tipped off originally by an American muslim. In fact the government agent was most likely a Muslim.

From what I have learned about this plot so far it sounds a lot like the showtime series "sleeper cell"....sorta wild....
Seriously though, WTG all groups involved in taking down these scumbags.....They are claiming no affiliation to Osama or Al Qaeda, and if this proves to be the case then maybe it will open up all the eyes of the liberals and let them see this isnt just a war on osama, but a war on the ideology of terror...
