Title: When you're outta ammo, why is it...
Post by: Gloves on June 23, 2006, 07:48:31 AM
I don't know if anybody else has experienced this, but it seems like when i run out of ammo and am in a furball, only THEN can I get on someone's 6 at d200 and stick to them like glue.  Why is that? :furious

I'm not saying this is a software issue.  It's clearly a pilot thing.

Anybody else experience this?

I've found that if I'm flying CAP over a base that's been attacked, enemy bombers only show up after I've decided to give it up, drop from 15k, and start final approach.  :p

one reason is because you are lighter with no ammo and by the time you have gotten to the furball and fought long enough to expell your ammo you have used a lot of fuel so that makes you lighter and more manuverable as well.  that is just my opinion there are more qualified people than me to answere your question i am sure:aok

at less than d200 - shows what a little patience can do.

I like to shoot my guns for no reason while heading to a fight. I like hearing the sound of it?

I would say among that your lighter because less fuel and no ammo, your not trying to pull for a shot but stay behind the enemy. Often pulling for a shot and aiming takes some time and meanwhile you loose the position on the enemys six.

Yep, and while you're flying perfect formation on his 6 you're wondering how to disengage and run without him noticing.

That's when he crashes into a tree.  :D

You're not worried about pulling angles for snapshots, and you're not willing to take headon shots since you have nothing with which to return the favor, so you are naturally compensating by performing manuevers that put you in the absolute safest position relative to the other plane at those distances -- on his six.

The key is to train yourself to do that all the time, and then you've got it made!

Was about to post that. Thanks for saving me the trouble Todd :).

Just shoot 30degree six shots for a while. NO deflections, and NO HO.... Dont worry about *killing* the other guy. Count every fight you end up on his six as a win.

I have to agree with Bly on this one. And to some extent, Todd. You are more manueverable because of less weight in ammo & fuel & you are being more cautious about engaging.

Think Levi nailed it spot on.  Fuel/ammo weight have little or nothing to do with it.

Notice where your plane is pointing.  When you have ammo, you tend to lead for a shot.  With no ammo, you have nothing to shoot, you lag the enemy and find yourself on their 6.

Set up for the shot, then shoot.  To get behind someone, point your sights behind them.  When you are behind them, then shoot.  I have to remind myself this alot.  :)

I'm sticking with the murphy argument...

As a matter of fact I think it is directly tied to the FACT that if I am in a Spitfire 9 there will be a sky full of B24's, but if I get a 190A8 with big guns, there will not be a bomber within 200 miles.

How about not shooting until you are on their 6 at d200 out?  your more likely too hit them from 200 or less, the closer the better.

Happens to me all the time. I concluded that it was simply because I relaxed and stopped trying too hard. When I have ammo. I'm in 'kill, kill, kill' mode. When I run out I just relax. You can still follow the guy and harass him. I got a few kills like that. I remember chasing a Stuka. How he twisted and turned thinking I was about to drill him. How I laughed when he augered into the sea trying to get away. :rofl

Knowing this I try really hard to relax when armed but usually the red mist descends..................... ...

Interestingly I found a similar thing in real life flying. The more relaxed I am the better I fly.

I agree, when I'm in kill mode I'm constantly looking for the 'perfect shot' that I never seem to make or get.  When I am 'bingo' ammo I just concentrate on harrassing the '6' of the pursed plane.  I usually end up with the perfect setup with out any ammo.  It seems I should hold the shot or go for the setup before the 'rock & roll' sequence.:noid
