I just got a bottle of Noah's Mill 15 years old Kentucky from someone and I wonder if its any good.
If its good ill keep it, if its only so-so ill give it to someone as a gift.
Dont think i have ever had any bourbon before.
-
if it were me, i would try it and if i didnt like it, i would keep it around the house for guests who might like to try it. it's always good to have a few good liquors around. everyone has different tastes.
but that's just me.
i have read good things about that particular selection, so it's probably a good
model.
not a huge bourbon fan, but i've recently had the opportunity to sample some nice cognacs.
yummy.

My cabinet is full.. to the brim :)
if bourbon is anything like cognac ill say no thanks.

Dunno, never tried it myself.
To put it in context: its production and price make it analogous to a mid-level single malt (= a step above glenlivet). This isn't a bourbon I'd recomment mixing with anything. Sip it, try it with a splash of water, try it on the rocks, in that order, until you find it outstanding.
But yeah, I think you'll find it's a nice sip. At that level, it's hard to make bourbon that doesn't at least taste good.
Of course, if you don't like the brassy swagger of charred amurrican oak, you may be better off drinking whisky for young ladies, such as Canadian.
-
lol.
canadian.
lol.

Bourbon isn't anything like cognac. It's more like a scotch, but with a bit of an edge. There isn't as much flavor variety with the bourbon, but that's mainly because they don't use freekin iodine in it. I never could understand the love for peety scotches. Different strokes.
-
Peety scotches are not good.. IMHO.
for example.. MaCallan is expensive and makes me want to gag.
Aberlour OTOH is smooth as the inside of a bikini model's thigh.

Bourbon is something that is meant to be sipped around with the Fellas while smoking cigars.
I love it, but I'm currently not rich enough to invest in scotch AND bourbon. I have to pick one over the other.
-
ROFL Straffo :D
Cognac may be enjoyed in the winter when its about -20c... but only ONE glass.
-
Never heard of that particular brand. But if it's aged 15 years, it can't be that bad. :aok

Havent heard of it before either.. Its not something you can buy here i belive. The guy who gave it to me bought it in Denmark.
Googeling for it now
-
Bah. Ignore the people who say its for "sippin".
Its great for gettin rip-roarin drunk too. :)
It makes a great mixed drink with cola and ice, or using cola as a chaser if you want to get drunk really fast. :aok
If you find you do not like it, you can always ship it to me, I'll be glad to give it a home.
-
Mix Bourbon with OJ, Lemon Juice, and Ginger Ale. It'll get you smashed quicker then a baseball bat to the face.

I find it odd that you say that. Of all the single malts I've had I find the 12 year McCallan and 15 year Aberlour to be most alike. I like them both but like the Aberlour better. Both are heavy in the sherry flavoring.

I don't know that I've had the 12 year McCallan, but the 15 is not peety at all. They do a brandy finish on it that makes it kinda like a girly scotch, but it's not bad.
Most scotch makers do a vintage of Islay or peety crap. It's definately not a flavor I prefer in Scotch. Smokey rules.
I do like the 12 year Balvenie and Glenmorangie. They're great for buying a bottle and drinking without killing the wallet. The Balvenie 21 is also very good, but you end up paying for it. The 30 year was simply awesome, but you can't find it anymore. The Balvenie 15 isn't something that I ever cared for. The Balvenie 17 was an Islay cask and sucked, but sold out quite quickly every time it appeared in the shed.
Bourbons aren't as diverse, but they do vary in subtleties. I like Knob Creek for most occassions and Woodford Reserve if I want something a bit too hot for the wife to drink. Booker's is great if you want to be crawling after 6 rounds... decent flavor too but you have to cut it with some water to keep the alchohol from killing your taste buds before trying it.
I've never heard of Noah's mill before, but most of the 10+ bourbons I've had have been good.
-
My favorite bourbon is a 12yr Weller. Marker's Mark and Buffalo Trace are close seconds.
All this talk of whisky has me pulling out a bottle of Lagavulin I've been savoring for a few months. One last drink left. It is an Islay and many find the peaty and iodine flavor to be too pronounced. It grows on ya.
-
Rebel Yell. That's my favorite bourbon. I just prefer the taste over all the other bourbons, even those that are supposed to be very good.
Plus you have to give major props to any bottle of liquor that used to have the Confederate Flag on it.
-

Sir, you have me mistaken. If you want to mix bourbon with cola and ice, I strongly reccomend Wild Turkey.
It's the difference between a sensor-fuzed, explosively formed penetrator and a clusterbomb. If you've got a certain target, the SFW is far more effective, and so you sip the fine bourbon; On the other hand, for grunts in the open, I recommend DPICM, or Turkey with Coke.
Why mix a $60 bourbon when the $20 model already performs exceptionally?
I mean, hell, you could substitute this guy's stuff, but it won't taste as good in the role as the Low Flying Bird. 'Cos one was born to mix, the other born to sip. I'm just tellin' the man, he's got a sippin' whiskey. If you've honestly got experience with anything that didn't need the Atlanta "4 cups of sugar and a bit of the cola nut" treatment, speak up man.
And by the way, I do enjoy a good mixing bourbon. To the very end. Hell I'll even shoot that stuff.
-
Alright now. I tried to be funny, I failed miserably. Not the first time. But theres no need to get nasty and start suggesting I drink Wild Turkey. Sugar water with a little ethanol thrown in for a kick. Yuck.
-
Hey don't knock Wild Turkey one of my ancestors branched off from the Nichols family in South Carolina and took his whiskey making skills with him and that is where Wild Turkey came from.
Personally I like Basil Haydens neat.
From http://www.smallbatch.com/
Distinctions
Basil Hayden’s is unique in that it utilizes twice as much rye in it as the other bourbons in the Collection. This abundance of rye gives it a slightly peppery taste and aroma, perfect for sipping on the rocks. Aged eight years at a relatively mild 80 proof, Basil Hayden's has a broad appeal and is delicious in mixed cocktails.
Tasting Notes
Age: 8 years
Proof: 80
Color: Golden amber
Aroma: Spice, tea, hint of peppermint
Taste: Spicy, peppery, honey, light-bodied, gentle bite
Finish: Dry, clean, brief

No...its not good...pretty much bottom shelf rot gut, so might as well give it as a gift.
Did I mention my birthday was this week? :D

I've had Noah's before. It's a "sippin'" whiskey. You'd be wasting it if put on the rocks and definitely don't mix Noah's that's what Wild Turkey and Jack are for.

i would rather give props to one who still did though. not because i am a reb. (though i live in the south) but because i think that letting symbols have power is how they get power in the first place. taking it off while still calling itself rebel yell makes me think of disney on a hot sticky day.
but that's just me.
i digress.
