I would have imagined the green to be a bit more vibrant.
That aside, "ooh!" and maybe, oh sure why not, "ah!"

Still wish I could see more photo evidence to back that one up. If you look a the photo you posted Kev, doesn't it look like there is either no blue around the bar in the wing star and bar? My first thought is that it's got the red outline to the entire star and bar but I can't make out anything around the bar. Just looking at the photo a bit in photoshop and inverted the colors and it sure looks like the red outline is on the star but not the bar. Wonder if they were mid paint at that point?
That and I sure wish they could get the nose of the AH Spit V to look right :(
The work is great as usual Kev :)

Guppy, without playing around in photoshop, my naked eye can see an outline around the bar. It's faint but I can see something
-
I tweaked the bright/contrast. I'm positive it's got an outline. The outline definitely stands apart from the paint on the wing.
The only odd part is that I don't see it around the star, and it seems to be a different shade from the star.

So more then likely red outlined. But digging through the books there are color photos of US flown Spit from the same time frame with no outline to the bar and the star in just a blue circle.
Again the danger of relying on just the profiles :) Looking for a photo of a US flown MTO Spit V with a definate blue outlined star and bar, as I'm wondering if they were in VIIIs by that time as that was late 43.
Just looking at a book on Air Force Colors ETO-MTO and it says the red outlined star and bar was basically used from June to August 44 when the look was changed to the blue outlined star and bar.
Wonder when this bird was flying? Sounds like the 31st and 52nd FGs were getting IXs from May of 43 onward before changing to VIIIs in early 44.
Gotta love a good mystery :)

I looks to me like it has the red outline.
-
Now that I look at it, I see it around the star, as well... I just didn't recognize it.
-
I remembered I had an article from long time ago about US Spits. It appears the 52nd in particular operated all three types, Vs, IXs and VIIIs into early 44 so it's possible that it's the blue outline. Yet there was a photo of a Spit IX with the red surround dated early 44!
I have yet to see a photo of a blue outlined star on a Spit V of the 52nd. Obviously that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I did see one photo of a plain white bar and just the blue circle and star.
I'd agree that it should probably be the red surround to the star and bar though.

Your wish is my command, red outlines.

Now that is cool... :aok
