Title: Memory
Post by: cav58d on June 29, 2006, 01:40:29 PM
I just added 512 RAM to my original wee 256 RAM...All I can say is wow what a signficant difference...Im now running 768MB of RAM which is still under a gig, but I have seen nothing but significant improvements to the game, and my computer when multi tasking...I'm writting this to recommend that anyone who only using 256 to got out and buy a stick of mem...512 stick cost me $60 bucks at best buy...anyways...go ahead and do it, its well worth it....

2.00 cpu.....I know, im struggling....Im on a dell dimension 4500S...Also have PCI only, PCI Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 128...

if I return this card and buy the gig, even though its only a 256 upgrade from what I have now will I see even more improvement?

also is it worth updating to a 256 vid card knowing that I have a PCI slot?

***184 Pin DIMM  Please find me a card from newegg =)********

thanks

I am no expert, but Crucial shows that your Dell can use PC2700 (DDR333) or PC3200 (DDR400) memory.  Personally, I would probably go with kingston's, corsair's or OCZ's "value" version stick.  Little more than the $60, though you might be comfortable with a cheaper brand.

More ram is always better.

I don't think I am qualified to help you with the video card.  Skuzzy would be best to ask.

In the case of AH, more memory is better.  After a lot of other upgrades, I was still suffering from micro screen freezes and stutters.  If you have 2 gig of memory you can load all the skins and textures into system memory and almost illiminate those nasty stutters.  It's the thing that helped me the most because AH has to hit the hard drive if you don't have the skins in memory.

I was looking at the memory type you use and although you probably can't put 2 gig in your machine memory is still probably the best upgrade you can do.

Speaking of memory, if you're less than a gig, more is better! For anything! Everything!

I wish I could buy 3 more 1gig modules and run in dual channel mode. Right now I've got 1.5GB on single channel. When I had 512MB Photoshop was pretty fast when loading. I mean it was way the heck faster than my old computer. After I put another 1GB in it barely blinks and photoshop is loaded! filters and all!
