how long before you keel over and die if you deprive yourself of sleep, im curious.
Ive been awake since thursday at 10:40 hours GMT.
Friday was tough towards the end, but honestly, saturday has been easy as pie, and i dont feel much more tierd than after a normal day.
i wondering about pushing another 24 hours simply because ive got watermelon all to do for a while, and ive only ever made it to 55 or so hours before.
things are amazingly crystal clear right now. Imagine shakin off the groggy morning feeling and then not feeling it again for 2 days. brain feel so in sync and smooth its unreal.
for the record i have not ingested any narcotics, or pills and i have had less than the legal ammount of beer to drive during the terrible england football rubish thing.
has anyone ever stayed awake for over 72 hours?
anyone kow any medical jargon to tell me what my body might be feeling?
apart from hunger that never stops, nothing feels all that bad, apart from this little red blob clouding my vision sometimes. and 'air pixels' screwing with my mind.
I was flying AH earlier, and everything was so simple and ordered, not like a quick morning sortie before the day starts when your mind is still waking up. gunna fly some more now.
i know the obvious question is WHY?
but, like, ya gotta stop asking those kinda questions dudes.
every now and then i feel a touch and am prone to lying down 'for a few seconds'. this will be inevitably how i fail.
always wondered though, if you stayed awake for long enough using ultimate jedi style control, would you turn into an old man in the space of a few months? would you simply age faster or end up dying of sleep deprivation looking the same age?
hmmm
but why?
-
Certainly a novel idea for a suicide atempt.
But there are literally thousands of other ways to do it.
Curious why you chose sleep deprevation?
-
On the upside. You are giving yourself plenty of time for someone to try to talk you out of it.
Im not one of those people trying.
Im just saying LOL
-
Hey, be sure to let us know if it works!
:aok

I stayed awake for eight days straight once when I was a younger; dumber man. You can go a very, very long time without sleep before your body begins to shut down, I saw a guy on a documentary that had not had R.E.M. sleep in several years, he would only catnap a few minutes a week, he had some nuerological disorder & it did kill him eventually, he looked as though he had A.I.D.S. near the end. Pretty danged sad really.
According to that program it's the R.E.M. sleep you have to have & if you are deprived of sleep entirely you can die in about a months time, they cited some tests the Nazis did, but I can't give any particulars.
I'd take an over the counter sleep aid & just go to bed. It's not healthy to lose that much sleep.

Sleep deprivation has a pretty beneficial effect on depression and anxiety. Maybe thats why he sees things so 'clearly' right now.
-
2 weeks? Pfft, amateurs. I used to drive 18 wheelers. Once I went from Dallas to San Francisco, to Buffalo, to Chicago, to Atlanta, to Orlando, to L.A., to Newark and back to Dallas without sleep. There may have been some assistance involved.

My best is only 41h straight, I think it's when Falcon 3.0 was released, or one of those early indiana jones.
I know 3 days start to be hard to do without "micronaps", that's from my military experience.
-
Culero!! :lol
still awake, and alive.
btw, im not contemplating suicide, norstaying awake out of my own control.
just doing it for a bit of a laugh really.
isnt R.E.M a crappy music group?
just out of interest, if i was planning on doing myself in through the unlikely means of sleep deprivation, how would you convince me not to?
The misses thinks im nuts, although she did comment on how i still have too much energy after 3 days.
just looked in the mirror, man, if i could post a pic of myself..... hold on....
-
I've done 8 days and 7 nights of no sleep. It was for an architecture project. And because of that, I know hate Architects, especially those who teach.
After the 3rd night, I just didn't feel the need to sleep anymore. Of course, I could tell I was only operating at 80% efficiency. But 80% x 24 hours is equivalent to 19.2 hours of 100% work. Compar that to 100% work at most 17 hours of work.
Anyway, it was the greatest sleep of my life on the 8th night. I wasn't tired, but I went to bed anyway. I woke up the next day after 8 or 9 hours and could run a 3 minute mile if I wanted to.

I've run with 3 before, but it's a huge pain trying to keep them straight. Glad I'm out of trucking, too.
-
i made it 3 days before, but there were narcotics involved.
-
I made it 3 days but there was beatings and torture involved. Well, mostly "simulated" torture which hurt enough to keep you awake. I was mostly disappointed that I didn't halucinate.

Went 36 hours without sleep once. That was quite enough. Things got really weird towards the end. No intention of repeating the experience. I know a farmer at the moment who is working until 4 am, then rising at 6:30 and doing it all again. Making hay while the sun shines, literally. I'd say when he finally relaxes he will sleep two straight days.

The Human body can go on like that almost indefinetly. Two hours of actual sleep per night will keep you going. As mentioned earlier, the little cat-naps you have to get doing military exercises will keep you going for a very long time, several weeks, five minutes here, ten minutes there. (or less).....Time to crawl under the basha

I was out with friends kinda late last night, and didn't hit the sack until about 2am after I got home, then I woke up at about 7 this morning. It's 8:10 now and I think it's time for a nap...I may try and stretch it out until 8:30 so I can say I was awake for an hour and a half. I'll keep you guys posted - wish me luck!
-
hey good luck!
i just woke up with a bastard head ache and neck cramps.
maybe im being punished for missing the 72 hours mark :D
-
What's weird with me is my new job increases my work load by about 8 hours per day and I decreased my sleep time by about 4 hours and it's worked out fine. as long as I stay busy I don't miss sleep. As soon as I have nothing meaningful to do i'm zonked.

I do believe I can accurately state from experience that you are nearly reaching the starting gate. :)
how long before you keel over and die if you deprive yourself of sleep, im curious.
Most reasonably sound of mind people will be enlightened and recognize the signs and hints from the experience until they realize that you are at the point of no return before death occurs.
Sometimes you will wonder "Is this the point I have to stop or will I be revealed more hidden, alter deminsions of reality and wisdom by continuing on?"
I can give you some personal examples of stages I went through on my quest for the answers.
After numerous days without sleep, around 2:30 or 3:00 A.M. in the rolling hills between Snyder Texas and Post Texas I suddenly realized how perfectly crystal clear the landscape around me, the sky, any colors, senses and sensations had became. It was quite exhilerating until I topped a hill to see a herd of horses covering the pavement a short distance ahead. Immediate adrenaline accompanied with the total lockup of all air brakes. This was followed with a sense of wonderment and dismay as I slid through a great number of unavoidable horses without any impact. It soon became evident that here were actual no horses.
I asked myself..."Is this the sign?" I decided it wasn`t.
A similar experience with a truck wreck with a load of strawberries strewn across the pavement followed later. No truck wreck. No strawberries.
The same question came to mind. I continued in my quest for knowledge.
Many, many more memorable experiences came through the years.
I left a fuel stop one night on the far side of Houston by about 25 miles heading in to hit 610 around to 45 and on north. I suddenly became aware of a sense of loss of time and location. I was puzzled due to the fact that I thought I should be seeing the glow of city lights before I entered Astrodummy. I quickly ruled out an alien abduction due to a quick check for any soreness due to probes. I settled into waiting until I reached a landmark. Shortly thereafter I did. A roadsign stating "Huntsville 17 miles". I had aboslutely no recollection of either entering, passing throug or exiting the city. I was at a real loss of whether this was THE sign or not. I finaly decided it was not. My nearing Ninja driving skills had been granted. I carried on.
It was some time before I finaly reached the stopping point and the end of the quest.
I was pretty amused some years later when I was reading an article in a biker magazine written by a participant in the Ironbutt Rally.
He stated in the article that he knew it was time to stop when in a flash he was revealed all the answers to all the unsolved questions of the universe. Revealed the meaning of life. Total enlightenment and knowledge.
The problem was that before he could stop and get a pen and pad out of his saddlebags to document his findings..............he had forgotten it all.
I felt pretty smug and honored to know that I too had the knowledge and became part of a very elite group of travelers who had made the journey to seek the answers of the vast land of the netherworld of the human mind.
I hope that helps. :)

maybe 20 years ago, some guy put himself in a cave in Texas and did an experiment in sleep / wake rythyms. (it was an article in National Geo)
He lived maybe four months without external time ques. His "day cycle" at one time stretched to something like 60+ hours. 40 hours wake, 20 hours sleep...
-
I have been sleeping an average of 3 hours a night for the last 6 years or so. Not my choice, I just don't sleep longer... and I refuse to take pills. The only day I managed to sleep more than that was after my tandem jump.
I *would kill* for an 8 hour sleep night.
