Title: 2 Questions about Il-2 (the game)
Post by: AKSWulfe on October 26, 2001, 10:55:00 AM
From Il-2's website:
"When is IL-2 Sturmovik scheduled for release?

IL-2 Sturmovik will be available worldwide November 29, 2001."

Is this true, or has their website not been updated?

Question #2)
I have an AMD Athlon 900Mhz (o/cled to 954mhz), 212Mhz FSB,
512MB PC133 SDRAM(o/cled to 142Mhz)
Voodoo5 5500(PCI)
SB Live!

Will the above system run Il-2 well?

Animal...that would be 106mhzx2...the bus runs up and down so they double it.

In Russian IL-2 forum ( http://www.sukhoi.ru/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=5 (http://www.sukhoi.ru/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=5)  ) Oleg and some other developers said they optimised the code, and the beta-demo is slower then release. So - I think your machine will be good enogh.

But, unfortunately, they optimised the game for Intel CPUs, and on AMD it can be slower.

What worries me now is when they are going to release a Russian version. Western relases (not "pirated" copies") come to Moscow in a matter of months  :( I want my legal boxed copy with original pilot's manual, flight book and a T-shirt. The recommended price for a box is $21 in Russia, but looks like it will appear even later then "jewel" version...

The most funny thing about IL-2 is that the Russian community is divided into "online pilots", mostly WBers, and "offliners". Onliners find many FM bugs, critisise the AI (artificial idiots), and usually tear "offliners" to a British flag in H2H. I have tons of fun watching their flames  :) Typical arguments: "You don't know how to fly! You, onliners, don't follow the RL regulations! Your tactics is useless!" - "Precise and correct maneuvering in air combat leads to pilot's death (c) Alexander Pokryshkin. Now - look, who's burning?"  ;)

Yes Raub is right.

I couldn't modify the clock ratio (which is the multiplier you see x9.0 or x6.5 or x12.0), and my mobo runs a normal FSB of 200Mhz (my Athlon CPU supports 200, but my mobo supports up to 266Mhz)... So I had to change the core clock speed, and this is the FSB. This gives me higher internal clock speed on my CPU and also overclocks my memory as well and gives me generally a better overall boost than simply overclocking my CPU. (10-20Fps gain in AH)...

However, if you set the speed too high, you will get Windows Protection errors (I set it to 110, the memory didn't like it at- but would boot up sometimes)... After 5 reboots, my system said "F*ck you sweety!" and gave me an overclock fail. So I had to turn it down to 106mhz.

Boroda, so is the release date above in fact a release date I couldn't count on?

Will it be on store shelves (In the US) then, or will they be shipping them to stores across the world then?

Thanks.

Oleg has posted that IL2 is nearly done and asked beta testers to refrain from posting beta 4 screens after 11-1-01 as Maddox and Ubisoft will be posting screens from the gold and that basically we ain't seen nothin' yet.

Not sure on release date but I really think it is on schedule....I hope.

I tested beta 1 and 2 on a PIII 500 with 192MB ram with an sblive, Diamond V770 TNT2 with 32mb and it ran just fine.

It bogged a bit with much action onscreen but it is also a bit below recommended specs.

On the 1.3 Athlon with Geforce2@64mb and 512mb ram all is very well indeed, beta 4.

I have not kept very much track of voodoo problems but I think there are or were some issues.

I am also one of those with DSL problems....cannot connect to online games due to IP conflicts or something we are told will be fixed in Gold.
I connected online from AOL DSL with no problems but unable to with SBCGlobal

SW, don't you have the demo or know someone who does?
The demo, which works great for most people is very obsolete now.

IL2 will not impact AH for lotsa guys in the arena online but I think some hotshot AH fighter jocks are in for a test if they go online in IL2.

I really hope people will not pass IL2 up due to the lack of US fighters, they will miss a great WWII flightsim.

Dammit, Animal said almost the same thing with 5 words, I guess I need to hire an editor.

I have the Demo at work, but unfortunately I haven't taken the time to get it onto a CD (102 megs, just over a 100MB zip disk)- I ran it at work and tried turning down almost all of the settings and I was getting a framerate of literally about .25(screen updated every 2seconds)... This is on a Voodoo Banshee, PII 400, 256MB PC100 SDRAM...

I know, this system sucks- but today was the first time I got around to installing the demo and trying it and I was a little awe-struck that it ran THAT slowly...

Perhaps it needs a reboot or something, I'll try to get the demo home and try it there.

Thanks for the replies.

V5 5500 cards seem to have some problems running IL2, below is a recent quote from the IL2 beta forum.

I tried it last night and got missing textures on the planes and black spots in the sky.

You might also check the forums at SimHQ, I've seen some posts in there about  problems with V5 5500 cards and IL2.

Sunchaser, is it just DSL users having that problem? I'm on cable and haven't been able to connect to any online IL2 games.

Raubvogel, there are connect problems with cable also but Oleg posted on Simhq awhile back that all connection problems will be addressed in the final release.

Some people have found workarounds involving disabling certain cards or whatever but the problem seems to do with more than 1 IP number on an individual computer.

Aces High has no problem sorting through them on this computer so I tend to believe it is just something IL2 missed or did not even realize would be a problem.

Those who can connect are having way too much fun.

Off line the guns are weak. They feel about right. Which means online its going to be WB all over again. Packet loss here, warp there, and you got the rubber bullit blues all over again.

I ran demo on my laptop - it's smooth in the FPS department (PIII 1GHz & GF2Go 32MB). It's the viewing setup and controls sensitivity I have a problem with...

Gunnery in IL2 is unbelivably difficult the 20mm cannon are weak and produce giant black clouds of smoke that completly obscure a fighter making repeat hits even more difficult. Maybe I really suck but I have followed a Yak1 at 10 meters range and fired all my cannon ammo at him scoring only several hits and doing no damage. Im concerned about why this is so difficult.

I have a PIII700 256Mb RAM, GF2 MX, and ADSL.  I put the game at 1024x768 16bit color.  Detail is high for most everything except landscape, and I do this for purposes of spotting aircraft.  Otherwise, I'd have landscape up at Medium to High, since my system can handle it fine.  Online play is pretty smooth now (BETA-Ver.4 here) with very very little lag, if any.  I haven't played with more than 4 people, but we were playing with at least 10-20 AI aircraft too, and some ships.  The game has progressed quite nicely from the initial beta versions to this latest.  Oh, and I put it in OpenGL mode, rather than DirectX.  I am extremely impressed with this game.  Though it's not MMG material, it does set itself apart as its own class of game when you combine all that il2 offers.

I'm pretty certain this game will be out by late November in the west.

Boroda:
Are you sure about the delayed publishing in Russia?  UbiSoft have no distribution rights there, it's all 1C's.  There could be a whole another agenda wrt the Russian release...

I got it home and tried it out:

A few things about this demo (unsure if some of them will be fixed-- I know that some will be)..

P39 Roll Rate- Fixed I hear- but did they honestly believe that was right to begin with?

Damage model- Nice, but it's very iffy... I can have a huge hole in my right wing, but if I go into a turn I don't have that wing producing less lift or more drag... it just may slip into an accelerated stall or go into a flat spin.

Gunnery- It ain't that hard, the only thing that makes it hard are those giant puffs of black smoke that completely obscure even the largest of planes when you hit them with a cannon. Even a few sticks of dynamite don't produce that much smoke.

Crashing/Blowing Up- They sure do like that smoke at Maddox I guess, because everytime I crashed my system would be brought to it's knees trying to display the smoke (when shown close up) and then it would be fine once the black smoke disappeared.

Control Responsiveness- Apparently they don't model that there is a human pulling on the stick, the controls respond immediately and very easily.

Control Setup- In the beta any assignments I made to my controls would be reset to default when I restarted the beta... any idea why?

Voodoo5 graphic anomolies... will these be fixed?

SW there's a configuration file with attribute "read only". Change it and it should work.
Rest of questions: I'll wait 'till final version comes out.

..oh and Voodoo cards are yesterday's news, time to upgrade  :)

Is it a .ini file? If you know the name, that would help me out since I went through all the ini files I could find last night and none of them were joystick config files or anything along those lines.

Voodoo5 runs games great- Geforce FSAA looks like garbage compared to V5, and that's why I bought the V5.

The demo ran okay on my computer with a Voodoo 5500. I didn't see any graphic glitches, but I didn't play much either since the framerate was too low with the graphics turned up all the way and I would rather play AH if I have to turn the graphics down. Sure was nice to fly the P-39 though!

Anyone who says Voodoo 5500 is yesterday's news hasn't put one next to their GeForce2. Framerates with a Voodoo are roughly equal to the GeForce2 MX400 given 1 GHz PIII cpus and 256+ Mb of RAM. Of course the Ultra and GeForce3 both smoke it badly. But the image quality of any of the GeForce cards on x4 anti-aliasing (which costs some fps) at 1200x1600 looks like crap compared to the Voodoo 5500 at 1024x768 with x2 anti-aliasing (which costs almost no fps).

I have been playing Aces High and Operation Flashpoint with a GeForce2 MX400 and Windows 2000 at school to help decide what I should do about upgrading my Voodoo and my operating system. The above results have led me to the conclusion that I will be sticking with the Voodoo and Windows98SE until newer software forces me to upgrade. I still don't know what card I will get after the Voodoo. Does ATI have a good image? Will ATI ever have working drivers? Has Kyro caught up to the GeForce3 in speed? How is Kyro's image quality and drivers compared to ATI and NVidia? I wish someone could get the rights to make proper DirectX 8/WindowsXP compatible Voodoo drivers, then I wouldn't have to deal with all these problems in the near future. I hope NVidia exploits their purchase of 3dfx technology to produce a GeForce card with the speed of the Ultra, the enhanced features of the 3, and the image quality of Voodoo cards... maybe even throw in Glide support since games designed to run on glide look fantastic and run much faster (Operation Flashpoint is a recent case in point).
