today i just encountered this dogfight, i was the a6m5b in a ffa and i came to ares9th, he was in a p51d when we started i clearly had the turn advantage, but i also had less armor, but he had the speed, and the firepower, eventually we were at each other's necks he was smokin a bit, and i was smokin some also, but we were never able to finish it at all, (some unwanted attention) , but i was wondering how the a6m5b could overcome a p51d in a head on df....
cuz the a6m5b can stay on the pd1d's tail, but when you start a df u sometimes go head on when you start, the p51d will damage your engine (if theres a good pilot) so the a6m will smoke, and that meane the a6m has to put it into high gear and get back at the p51d before the oil runs out and the engine dies, so i was wondering if anyone has some maneuvers they could show me, teach me, or give me some hints n tips for a dogfight like that. ty all:aok

can anyone help me...?
-
Yes. Avoid the head-on. It's that simple. Avoid the HO and you won't lose your oil. Then once the HO has passed you can turn onto the P51's tail.
-
but like, when i turn off if the p51d is an expert pilot he'll just nail me to bitts when i roll left right or dive..
-
it can be hard to learn it in H2H, but try and see if you can meet one of the trainers in there, if not, maybe i can try stop by and teach you a little, but the secret is in ACMs and great shooting :)
negative energy maneuvers and snapshots and the pony, if it is indeed a relatively skilless wally pilot, should die from a few cannon rounds;) takes quite some practise though :D

As you said h2h I just bet it's like CFS was . They have the outside view on so it's somewhat diferant than in MA .
Try this worked for me , barrel roll through them , if the nose down below them don't work first .
-
hm.....hey pooface check the BTI ffa server everyone once in a while, ill be in there whenever im in h2h, it would be great if you could help me :)
-
hm...airspro, so what you are saying is when you are ho, barrel roll and go for their engine to stall it?
-
Diving under the enemy will help avoid the HO... a small amout of nose down causes a red out makes it hard to aim. Barrel roll as you approuch the enemy HO, this make it hard to aim again as the enemy has to track you up,around, and over for his shot.
If the pony driver is any good, hes not going to turn with your zero. Once he turns and starts toward you on a run, break to one side or the other about 10-15 degrees. As he closes turn more into him, forcing him to turn more and more to stay on your nose. Just before he goes to guns, go nose low roll back toward his flight path and pull back up. If you time it right you should have a narrow shot opportunity, this is where Poos good shooting comes in, with your cannons you could take the pony out now. Don't follow him, you'll never catch him, level back out and repeat once he turns around again.

kool....I wish i could get that lesson taught by a pro...if n e one could help me, please tell me :) ty fugitive

Yep , NEVER go for a head on 1v1 IMO , the barrel roll will let you get past him without giving him a clear shot , if our doing ho's your losing out on the best part of this game . I learned this , saying it some years ago and more now to others in vox range "NO HEADON'S" . With outside views turned on is much easier for some to get a shot on you in a nose down merge so u might not want to use that like you would in MA . Soon as your past , turn and get on his six . As they said , good pony drivers won't try turning with you .
If he turns with you ,keep him in view to the side of you nose just infront of the wing , your gonna turn inside him nicely that way . When finally close enough to shoot slid the nose up and get a nice under nose shot with those cannons :) . I got quiet some nice kill sorites with the zero last tour , cannons on that plane seem pretty good killers .
-
put him off either of your wings and as he gets closer and closer pull vertical smoothly then when he is like d200(depends on speed) pull up and over him in like a barrel roll. Just watch one of leviathn's film thats where i figured it out when i was teh noob.

thanks guys, especially to Schatzi, he's helped me every single time i had a question, thanks all , i feel kinda dumb that all i had to do was avoid the ho lol

hey bt, schatzi is no man, SHE's A WOMAN,BABY, YEAHH.

quick word on being HO'd in a zeke.... best scenario that can happen(and it will) oil hit.....worst scenario is a collision, which you will lose more often than you think possible, you're going to see all kinds of posts on being ho'd as collision happens, and it's quite possible. but the a6m(zeke) is a fragile plane, be prepared to lose 90 % of youe HO encounters...dive and bank and 1000 out...if you survive first pass... roll over top as soon as he passes,,,let the games begin.

schatzi is a girl?!?!?!?!( i dont really care though) wow, I havent seen a good female pilot :)

If you hang around awhile, or just do a search on the BBS here, you'll find lots of arguments on HO tactics. Regardless of what view you take on using HO shots as a tactic for your fights, I'd strongly recommend you not use it if you plan to fly the Zero. Its just not durable enough. Planes like the FW or the P-47 or the F4U ........... they all have one thing in common. Big radial engine in the front, can absorb lots of damage and keep going, less likely to take a pilot wound. Zeros are small, light, lightly armed and offer almost no protection to the pilot. You let yourself get sucked into a HO move and you give up all the things that give the Zero an advantage for the chance at one shot, and that chance is weighted against you.
