Ever wonder what all the graffiti is for? here's how gang wars starts in Los Angeles.
I live in North Hollywood, territory of these guys, the NH 'Locos' (crazies). The red 'NH' lets others know who's hood they have wondered into.

Enter the neighbors boyfriend, he's from "CX3", a gang from the city of Cudahy AKA "Cudahy 13". His homie is from a cliq in Lennox. He's moved in to NoHo and decided to disrespect the locos by doing these:

Its easy to read, WS = West Side
V = Vario meaning this is my neighborhood.
LNX = Lennox; many gangs use the LA Sheriffs acronyms, LNX being the Lennox sub station.
13 = "del sur" meaning "The South", any Hispanic gang(member) south of Bakersfield Ca is from 13, 'Nortenos" or northerners represent with a "14"
"TxKs" = his cliq
"Lentoe" = is gang moniker.
The wall reads as "Lentoe from West Side Lennox cliq Txks is here to say F you Locos"
The sidewalk spray-paint is different, and even more of an insult.. that's called a "rub out". You can see NHLS (NoHo Locos) in dark blue has been crossed out and replaced with "Cudahy X3 (for 13)", signed by "Blackie".
Blackie & Lentoe have basically moved into a rival gang hood and taken 2 square blocks they now claim belongs to them. Of course the Locos will not just take this, soon enough the bullets will be flying.
...and that's how gang wars start in LA, as Sublime said in one of their songs, the news isn't in the papers, it's on the walls.

I allmost agree with sandie on this one.... those who would become addicts will no matter if drugs are illegal or not. All making drugs illegal does is boost the profit and prestige to the point that gangs and criminals are made.
What would the gangs do if drugs were legal? They couldn't feed off each other... not for long anyway. Prostitution would be the only draw they could use. State allready killed illegal gambling with the most gambling anyone has ever seen... all state and federal sponsored... and all legal with no room for the gangs in it.

I ran into Lentoe & "Blacky" (his spelling) yesterday
Correction on his cliq, it's 'TKS" for "Lennox tokers". So far the Locos are silent, they're busy running car washes to raise $$ for a dead homie.
It's not about drugs, for now. These guys just moved here and are representing their "vario", if they moved in and didn't represent... they'd be 'hood hoppers' and get their sphincters kicked anyway.
Once established, they can sell narcs, tax merchants for protection... recruit, grow.
..and just think, there's a entire sub culture of these folks who, for generations, have done the exact same things just because it's what they do. Both these guys fathers, grand fathers, and great grandfathers were cholos & zoot suiters.... these kids could read & write graffiti before English.

Tax merchants? Is that done on a block by block basis? Shakedown the pizza place to keep it from burning down. Don't protection rackets run by neighborhood, not block? Or is it whatever you claim, you take.
Our prison system cant handle any more cholos. So, we need to start executing for lesser offenses, like rape. Need to make room for the little hoods growing up so fast.

It's more like a tax on not having a brick tossed through your window. However the cholos will remove bums & other riff raff at the tax payers request.
These 2 kids are hardly criminal masterminds, mental midgets more like it... I seriously doubt they have a plan of any kind at this point. I'd be suprised if either one could find his own nuts with both hands.

My girlfriends brother-in-law is in the LAPD and part of the anti-gang unit in the Rampart precinct. Crazy-ass stories he tells about the different gangs and such. He showed some pictures of some tags that were about him and his partner. Also the stories about the gangs and what their tatoos and signs mean is kind of interesting as well.

While traversing Burbank look for "BPO" tags, or "placas".. stands for "Burbank Punk Organization" Started "back in the day" as a valley based Dog Town (Venice) like punk/skater group and evolved into a street gang at some point.
The stuff I photographed is on Burbank Blvd between Lankershim & Chauenga, 1 mile from Burbank City of.
You'll also see "NHLS" North Hollywood Locos on Burbank Blvd near Champs bar (at Pass Ave) wast to about Laurel Cyn... although, as I'm sure you're aware, Burbank PD stops everything that moves... if it doesn't move, they push it.
Also a correction on Lentoes placa, its not "Txks", just "TKS" for "Lennox Tokers"

all they would have to do is hit every one of em all at the same time right? I mean... we are talking about crimes against the citizens and tyranny and illegal activities as a way of life right? we are talking war zones right?
If even 1% of the gun owners all refused to turn in their firearms or even 1% of Americans just sent in their tax forms with a big F you scrawled across em... what would the feds do?
Same as they do to the gangs.... ignore it or go after the easy ones.
and.... ask for more money.

I've wondered about this also. I suspect that some gangs would become more aggressive to ensure their survival. Home invasions, street robberies, and car jackings might soar. At least that would force the issue in dealing with the gang problem. The result might be loss of liberty for all though.

I'm very sad to report the "beef" has been squashed, Lentoe, Blacky and 2 others have succeeded in taking three blocks.
This came from the homies in the "monkey box" (Jail) who told the Locos to chill. As I was told, the chill order came straight from La M (Mexican mafia). Every Hispanic gang follows the rule of LA M under penalty of pain, they rule the jails & prisons... where gangs are separated by race, not geography.
If the M had their way, the streets would reflect locked up gang culture; M vs BGF (Black Gorilla Family) Vs Perkerwoods (Skinhead whites).. all minor street squabbles like this (between fellow hispanics) would be almost non existant.
La M basically gave them these 3 blocks since the locos that used to live here were summarily evicted by the City of Los Angeles...

A friend of sorts...well a schoolmate was killed by the Mexican Mafia (Or so it was said) Ran him over like 6 times. Arvin, Lamont in south kern, Delano, Mcfarland and Wasco in the north. Hate to see it nowadays. Left there in 82.

Always seemed strange, knew many mexicans and mexican-americans growing up. You could never fit in if you were a white boy, but you could be friends outside of the family / neighborhood societies.
Those boys moved in and took 3 blocks? Sounds like it was all planned from the start to me. Its a subculture that has its own laws....kinda scary actually.

I am white and I fit in just fine with the mexicans I am around... some of em are 2nd generation Americans and some barely speak english.... all of em have families and work for a living.
The ones you guys are talking about are just scum that no person of any race would want to be around much less get along with.

This is a great post Marine! Living in suburbia and the middle of no where I know very little of this. So far I learned alot. I just want to make sure I got this right...
So all these Mexican gangs fall under the rule of the LA M.The smaller gangs fight eachother over drugs and territory. But when the LA M says knock it off they listen.
Is the LA M made up of the smaller gangs and theres just a few leaders? Or are they just a very large gang with lots of power?
Does the LA M ever organize the smaller gangs and fight the BGF or the skinheads?

yes, i knew many like that too, and had black friends the same way. Didn't mean to generalize.
And the ones who were not part of long time american families were the easiest to be friends with.

WRT the guard, it's not about might. It's about will.
The cops have the will, but lack the might. The guard has the might but lacks the will.

Ok... then it all amounts to the same thing doesn't it. I guess I am just being pragmatic and a student of history here.
Governments only rule by the consent of the people they rule. The gangs do not want to be ruled. The government knows that a show of force will cause them more harm than good. They are powerless but want to preserve the illusion of power so they stay away.
Gangs are allmost universally despised in this country but an incursion by the government to stamp em out would meet with hordes of liberals and the media whining and crying and showing government atrocities and abuse of power against women and children and innocents and the racial card would be top of the deck.
They can't even stop know thugs and violent criminals who are even slightly organized.... they can't even enforce the immigration laws.
They can only be effective against groups of one or two or a church full of children. even then...it often bites em on the butt.

that problem was solved here in my beloved Florida with sensible legislation. the gist of the law to which I refer is if you feel in any way threatened and fear you are about to suffer bodily harm as you go about your business the use of deadly force is an acceptable deterent. contrary to the liberal doom sayers' predictions of turning our communities in to the "wild, wild west" what we now have is very polite people. the thugs say please and excuse me, there are no "road rage" incidents and such. once again proving the wisdom of the the adage that "an armed society is a polite society"

I agree Storch, Florida led the way in this and proved to be a very good example. However, gangs still find illegal drugs to be very profitable in Florida and most other places in the US. Take that source of income away and many will find their money somewhere else. Am I suggesting we allow the the illegal drug trade to placate the gangs? No, but we should be prepared to deal with them if we take it away.
I have mixed feelings about decriminalizing illegal drugs. I'm afraid many more kids will ruin their lives that wouldn't otherwise.

yep... so long as there is such an easy way to make money without any real effort there will be gangs who want to control it.... Hey... with drug dealing you don't have to get up and you make your own hours and never do any heavy lifting or thinking.
Even running prostitutes is harder. Drug prohibition is not working any better than alcohol prohibition did. It is also having much the same effect and affect on crime.....shooting it through the roof.

Texas has some interesting laws too. Last time I checked Texas law, you could shoot someone who was stealing something on your property(a car or bike perhaps) if it was after dark.
Here in AZ we have our share of violence. Fortunately it's criminals shooting each other(for the most part) and I'm fine with that.

ya AZ has some pretty good laws as does vermont. I've heard that in AZ you can actually go about heeled in the open.

I dunno... what is it now? What is it for booze? Do laws stop teens from drinking? I suppose you could use the same ones.
In my experiance... there are people who are addicts. They will become addicts regardless of the laws.
On the plus side.... in my experiance... there are a vast majority of the people who are not predispossed to addiction and a lot who may be on the border but are smart enough to not do drugs no matter how easy and available they are.
I also believe that once you take away the rebel aspect away and make it legal..... even more will not do it.
How does it help to have addicts steal and destroy a thousand dollars of property a day to get about $5 worth of drugs?
How does it help to finance gangs?

Stret gang activity is at it`s highest in prisons.
You see it over and over on documentaries, etc. that gang activity can`t be stopped in prisons. Gangs rule prisons, so to speak.
If you beleive in a confined space, under heavy guard, you can`t control gang activity or stop it entirely, what do you think the chances of controlling it on the outside are?
How much actual effort do you think is being put forth to stop it?
A piece of the pie is what it is all about.
Don`t know of anyone who would willing give up their paycheck or shut down their own job as a whole.
It`s a racket like everything else. Dollars and cents on both sides of the legal/illegal aspect.

agreed jakal.... gang activity is highest in prison where you have the highest concentration of losers and addicts imaginable... They prove that no laws or amount of surveilance will deter that portion of society from wreaking havoc on whoever they come into contact with including themselves...
They even corrupt the guards. It is the money that does it in that case.
Easy money, addiction... two things that feed the gangs. easy to slow the flow of both.
The government and it's laws created the gangs.... they did it out of stupidity and malice and they are too weak to stop it with the laws they themselves put in place. The laws cause the problem. The problem is so big that further laws will only make it worse.... the more risk... the more profit so far as drug dealing goes. and.... these guys are not afraid of prison...
What they are afraid of is.... not being able to make a living off of vice. No more easy money. no more rep...
That is the simple reality of the thing.
I don't see it changing in the near future so.... I just avoid em. I can't believe anyone is stupid enough to live and play in anything like close proximity to them.
