Rudy for president?
By Robert Novak
Sunday, July 9, 2006
WASHINGTON
Well-connected public figures report that they have been told recently by Rudolph Giuliani that, as of now, he intends to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
The former mayor of New York was on top of last month's national Gallup Poll measuring presidential preferences by registered Republicans, with 29 percent. Sen. John McCain's 24 percent was second, with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich third at 8 percent. National polls all year have shown Giuliani running either first or second to McCain, with the rest of the presidential possibilities far behind.
Republican insiders respond to these numbers by saying rank-and-file GOP voters will abandon Giuliani once they realize his positions on abortion, gay rights and gun control. Party strategists calculate that if he actually runs, he must change on at least one of these issues.
Democrat Lieberman
Supporters of Sen. Joseph Lieberman promise he will continue as a member of the Senate Democratic Caucus even if he loses the Democrat primary in Connecticut Aug. 8 and is elected as an independent.
Lieberman's decision announced last week to seek petitions to give him an independent ballot position probably helped Democrat businessman Ned Lamont's anti-war primary campaign. Although Lieberman's support of President Bush on the Iraq war is not popular in Connecticut, he would be heavily favored in a three-way race against Lamont and Republican former state Rep. Alan Schlesinger.
Wooing Hispanics
Presidential adviser Karl Rove and Sen. Sam Brownback, two conservative Republicans who favor a guest-worker program for immigrants, will address the left-wing Hispanic advocacy group La Raza in Los Angeles this week.
La Raza was active in increasing participation in nationwide work stoppages and demonstrations April 10 after the House passed a tough border-enforcement bill. La Raza in Spanish means "The Race."
Trial lawyer politics
Although it attracted no news media attention, a subcommittee hearing of the normally bipartisan House Financial Services Committee erupted in partisan furor June 28 when Republican Rep. Richard Baker of Louisiana proposed controls on lawyers engaged in securities litigation.
Baker's subcommittee focused on the recent federal indictment of the Milberg Weiss Bershad & Schulman law firm in connection with class-action lawsuits. The firm in recent years has contributed $2.78 million to Democrat candidates and $22,000 to Republicans.
The Financial Services Committee's top two Democrats -- Barney Frank of Massachusetts and Paul Kanjorski of Pennsylvania -- vigorously objected to a federal judge testifying about current defendants in a federal prosecution. Vaughn R. Walker, chief district judge for Northern California, gave the subcommittee his views on the indictments and Baker's legislation.
No dirty tricks
Independent, pro-labor candidate Bill Scheurer remained on the ballot after last Monday's deadline without challenge in the Chicago suburban congressional district where freshman Democrat Rep. Melissa Bean is a priority Republican target for 2006.
It had been widely expected that state House Speaker Mike Madigan, the Illinois Democrat chairman, would challenge Scheurer's collection of the necessary 14,000 petition signatures for ballot access. Scheurer had filed a lawsuit alleging dirty tricks by Madigan and other Democrat leaders.
Bean was the most spectacular Democrat winner in the 2004 elections with a victory over Phil Crane, the senior Republican member of the House.

IIRC, Guiliani's pre-911 opinion polls in NYC weren't all that.
-
I can't remember for sure, but didn't Guiliani get TIME'S man of the year award after 9/11?
-
Yep he seemed to rise to the occasion. That's a good trait to find in a person, that they can not just cope but thrive and do the right things in high levels of stress / pressure.
Why in the heck did they even include Newt's name in the poll after the crap he was involved in??? :huh

I've listened to a few interviews with Newt in recent months. I would definitely consider voting for him.

I'm sure since it's Novak doing the reporting, that it's absolutely true.

I guarantee that if Rudy runs, we will be seeing a lot more of the pictures of him in drag.
I also think that his decision to bring on Bernard Kerik as NYPD commissioner is going to end up biting him in the arse on the national level. Presidential nepotism is one thing....but I don't think pre-Presidential nepotism is looked upon favorably by the average voter.

Rudy would make a nice Democrat candidate...oh wait...he's in the GOP
-
I would think Democrats and those in the "center" would respond well to rudy. It might be refreshing to see democrats look past a republicans party membership and actually look at the issues. They might like him.
On the flip side the base of the GOP might not respond to him at all unless there's a total fairy running on the liberal ticket.
-
Compared to who has been running for president and who we have now, Id vote for rudy right away

Yup, totally MT. If somone can get elected in NY or CA running as a republican they have to appear as sheep in wolves clothing to the other side and completly fool the wolves at the same time. It will be interesting to see after all the distain that GWB has brought on the GOP from his initial election.

I'll have to admit that I do not have an informed opinion of Reagan's tenure as governor of this state. I was a little young.

... but I'll add that historically, Republican governors aren't all that rare...

There's this old farmer in a Midwest State of Iowa I met while traveling a few Months ago... Tied on a old road I came upon a fields, Farmer on a tractor. I hopped the fence seeking directions and walked maybe 50 yards to him. Was an old man late '70s early 80's my guess and said "Howdy"... As he came down of his Tractor he spat and raised his hat, looked me dead in the eyes. I was placed on line.
I stuttedered as I asked him what directions to take, tried to make things smoother we went to small talk about I had just crossed the line... asked him about farming, then he went on about local poloticics, Federal crap... The burn in his eyes went through me and he comensed to either teach me or scold me ..... and this is what he said....
"Son you like the Goverment have alottta gall comin onto my land askin me about matters just as much as me spreadin manure on MY land. Seems that no one pays attention to a farmer and his life...ask me what is important now. Better yet I'll tell you Son..it's gettin up at the break of day, tending the cows, chickens.. 5:30 it's breakfast them so I move out the cows and head to the fields. I sweat and work hard row after row and Momma comes out about noon or so with a pail of water and lunch, fried chicken or chops. In her eyes I can see I've worked beyond my times..
Son this farm here was worked by my Father for years and his Father before him and agin his Father and Fathers. We've has Failures, promises and Bounty. Seen many children raised here, some stayed for awhile, some left to fight in Wars. Some come back, some dont."
We're Church folk and if we can't make it on a Sunday we still turn down the lights and pray. We beleive a mans handshake is as good as his word. We call out to to the house before we approuch ones land which suprises me Son how you get so close and do you need directions or have a question?
I appologized for truspassin and asked for forgiveness, told Him I just wanted to meet a real true American. He turned back from the tractor and shook my hand. I never felt a hand as strong or rough, cracked and calloused.. his face showed the history of his harvest, his land and the smile will forever burn in my mind. He got on his tractior again, tipped his hat and welcomed me to come back around anytime again to his home.
Leaving I felt a sense of feelings..loss and gain.
That was a True American!

My money is on George Allen. He's a good republican candidate with core Reagan conservative values. I don't think Rudy can win. He's got too many skeletons in his closet and the Dems will beat him up with those bones. He already got lumped up with Bernard Kerick. McCaine will never get enough support from the Republicans and if he goes independent, it will ruin the GOPs chance of victory. If George gets the nod (and McCaine bows out like a real man), he should be able to crush the wicked witch of Clinton but I don't know about Mark Warner if he runs for the Dems. That would be a tough race.

If memory serves correct Willies homestate tried warning us about him before hand too.
what was it "Two step Willie" they used to call him or something like that
that being said Being in Jersey Im pretty familiour with Rudy.
His opinion polls may have been down but he managed to turn NYC around
Rudy is about the ONLY Rep I'd cast a vote for.
He's also about the only one I think has even the slightest chance of winning next election

Quite right. He did some things wrong, but he did a heck of a lot of things right. Nobody would deny that he did a brilliant job of cleaning NYC up. The main beef with him became that he started going too far - which is a small quibble when comparing the pre-Giuliani NYC to the post-Giuliani NYC. The guy was tireless.... and he was everywhere you looked. Easily the most active and visible local politician I've ever seen. I sure did like him.
But he couldn't beat Hillary in 2000 for an open Senate seat... (he was getting hammered) and dropped out.
Anyways..... It's easy to overlook the primaries when talking about 2008. That - or take them for granted. And I don't think that either Hillary or Giuliani will be able to scrape by them.
In Hillary's case, she'll have the most money... but she will be the pro-war establishment Democrat when, in 2008, people will want anything but an establishment anything in office. Not only that, but after the disaster that is eight years of the Republican administration, the Democrats will just want to win.
When the survival of the nation/constitution is at stake (and this already is the predominant sentiment), I don't think anyone is going to feel cozy enough to gamble on a first woman President. In better times, perhaps. Not in 2008. Sorry Hillary.
In Giuliani's case, I don't think he has a chance. The Republican party has done such a good job of relying on the far right wing of their base that the Republican candidate now simply must appeal to these people in order for any chance of success in the primaries. There's no way around it, and Giuliani's stances on abortion and gays won't get him past this first hurdle.
He has been attempting to make nice with these people lately, but McCain has been doing a much better job at that.
But aint that the rub....
Both of these men look like they want to vomit through their plastered smiles every time they get asked about having to "speak" to their base. Because the more they're forced to appeal to their base during the primary, the more they'll alienate the centrists during the general. Yet, they gotta get through the primary 1st.
This sure as hell aint yer daddy's Republican party no more..... but that's another thread.
Anyways.... I wouldn't buy the line on Hillary in '08. That's just being lazy.
Here's who to watch for:
Mark Warner
Russ Feingold
Wesley Clark
Bill Richardson
Evan Bayh
John Edwards
Tom Vilsack
and maybe?..... Gore
My bet is a fight between Warner and Feingold, with Clark a close 3rd. If Gore enters the race all bets are off.
