Shamil Basayev, the ruthless Chechen rebel leader responsible for terror attacks that led to the deaths of more than 800 people, was killed Monday when a dynamite-laden truck in his convoy exploded in this village of red brick houses next to a muddy field.
The blast that killed Russia's most-wanted man, who had a $10 million bounty on his head, appeared to have been an accident. Basayev died along with three other militants in this village in Ingushetia a republic plagued by sporadic spillover violence from neighboring Chechnya, where Russian forces have battled separatists for a dozen years.
Basayev, 41, was emblematic of the radicalization of the Chechen rebel movement which began as a secular fight for independence and its increasing domination by Islamic extremists. His death, while a huge victory for President Vladimir Putin's fight against terrorism, will probably not end an insurgency that has spread to communities across Russia's predominantly Muslim south.
"I am sure that the explosions will stop, but the Caucasus is far from peace," said Susanna Dudiyeva, whose 13-year-old son was one of 331 victims killed in the 2004 Beslan school siege, which Basayev orchestrated.
Russian television showed charred remains of the truck that exploded and two damaged cars next to a wrecked building. A corpse, apparently that of a rebel, lay on the ground with the clothes in shreds. The village is two miles east of Nazran, Ingushetia's biggest city.
Ingush Deputy Prime Minister Bashir Aushev said Basayev's body had been identified "through some of the fragments, including his head," the Interfax news agency reported.
Federal Security Service chief Nikolai Patrushev told Putin in a televised meeting that Basayev and many other rebels lost their lives in a special operation overnight in Ingushetia. He said the rebels were planning a terror attack to "put political pressure on the Russian leadership" during the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg this week. .
Explosives are not toys... :aok

Going to be several very nasty days in our not too distant future that will shave that number down considerably.

Beslan was only the last one from the list of his crimes.
Budennovsk attack in 1995 was the beginning of terror-acts outside Chechnya. Those gangsters captured a maternity hospital after stroming the town killing hundreeds in the street. And Yeltsin with his bloody gang have let him go...
I often mention Budennovsk and that maternity hospital, and I have a feeling that you guys don't understand what it means. Capturing a maternity hospital is IMHO much worse then Beslan attack.
I am upset that he died in an explosion. He deserved to de stabbed with byonet. It's a horrible death for a Moslim - to be killed like a dirty pig, means no paradise.

Is that him? I am assuming they needed to use DNA to ID the body if so.

He was identified by a leg prothesis and a burnt beard on a torn-off head. There are not too many terrorists with wooden legs riding around in KAMAZ trucks loaded with explosives.
Our absolutely brilliant, intelligent and educated defence minister Ivanov said today that "his ministry will perform all the DNA tests if FSB (former KGB) will ask them, but he thinks it's not nessesary". I always wonder, who selected this torches of human wisdom for their positions? You have been asked to perform DNA test, so - STFU and do it, especially if everyone knows that you look smart only until you start to talk.

BTW, "freedom-fighters" hosted by Democratic Western countries already admitted that the bastard became a "shahid" (it's an euphemism for "finally going to hell"). http://kavkazcenter.com/eng/content/2006/07/10/4942.shtml

I am on dialup now, some bastards tha have a wifi link with WEP using default 00000000000 keys are too stupid to use DHCP.... So - give me some time.
From an NTV programm that I saw an hour ago: they said that explosives Basayev had in KAMAZ were bought abroad. One of the bricks had a radio-activated detonator inside. When it was clear that Basayev is in the truck it was activated from sattelite. The load of plastified explosives went on together with a load of aviation non-guided rockets. WTG FSB.
Some people think that Basayev was caught in spring, and only now he got killed so noone will think that he was executed after all the information was sucked from him.
