The Daily Show analyzes the recent Sears Tower threat, good stuff.

Revised Patriot Act Will Make It Illegal To Read Patriot Act [/b]
WASHINGTON, DC—President Bush spoke out Monday in support of a revised version of the 2001 USA Patriot Act that would make it illegal to read the USA Patriot Act.
"Under current federal law, there are unreasonable obstacles to investigating and prosecuting acts of terrorism, including the public's access to information about how the federal police will investigate and prosecute acts of terrorism," Bush said at a press conference Monday. "For the sake of the American people, I call on Congress to pass this important law prohibiting access to itself." Bush also proposed extending the rights of states to impose the death penalty "in the wake of Sept. 11 and stuff."

Funny but maybe kinda foolish to dismiss this sort of activity as a threat. Afterall, what weapons did the 19 guys have that took down the WTC? How many guys did it take to blow up the Federal building in Oklahoma City?
Maybe we shouldn't prosecute theses guys afterall. What harm can they possibly do?
-
Lukster, ever thought to yourself or said "I'm gonna kill that guy" for something? Should you be locked up?
Maybe arresting these guys and throwing 'em in the slammer is the right thing, but I sure wish the threat had geled past the "It sure would be neat if..." stage that it was at. Otherwise, the world will be full of people who think the US overreacted.
Kinda like the difference between catching and executing Mohammed Atta twenty years ago versus on September 5th, 2001. Both might stop the attacks, but which one will be accepted by the public?

Thinking I'm gonna kill someone and conspiring with others to do it are two very different things. Why does Jon act like these guys couldn't actually carry their plan out? Is it he thinks because these guys are black they're too stupid to be successful? Enlighten me, please.

Well... Since Jon never mentioned race, the 'because they're black they're too stupid" idea is your own artifact. Kinda awkward.
I think he suspects that 5 guys (or however many it was) without any money, plans, surveillance, or, well... anything else, might not be that dangerous. At least, not yet.
Looks like these were idiots with big mouths that were not a threat, at least not yet. No training, no competence.... While it might technically meet the definition of conspiracy, doesn't look like it had left that stage for the 'likely threat' stage.
Unless, of course, there's more evidence that hasn't been released....

the "daily show"?
ROFLMAO. ah yes, the comedy show that the neo-libs think is a real news show.

Their pictures have been on the news, how could he not notice their race? How do you know they don't have funding? How do you know any of these other things you are asserting? As I mentioned (asked actually), guys whose only weapon was a box cutter took down the wtc. One guy took out the fed building in Oklahoma for very little money. A couple of highschoolers killed many people in Columbine and very nearly killed hundreds more. Only a moron wouldn't take a plot by 7 adults to kill thousands of people seriously.

...ummm, I'm sure he knows that they're black. What I find interesting is how you assume that anyone who sees someone black must obviously assume that they must be incompetent as a result. I suspect that he didn't take them seriously because their spokesman sounded like a loon.

You have neglected some resources that the other attacks had. The WTC folks had a bit more than boxcutters. I've read that the 9/11 operation cost $500,000. Additionally, all the attaclers attended Terrorist Summer Camp in Afghanistan, and others had experience leading Mujahadeen style attacks against the Soviets.
The Oklahoma City attack was masterminded by ex-military guys who were bankrolled by someone, I don't know what the cost of the operation was. It may have been inconsequential, but I think you're deluding yourself if you think the buck stopped w/ Nichols & McVeigh.
Columbine? Yep, that sucked. They conspired, then planned, built weapons caches, gathered ammunition, documented their timelines, then attacked. You might want to read up on the level of detail they followed, there were a bunch of different spots where they might have been caught, but unlike the Sears Tower guys (at least, according to publicly available info as of right now), those guys weren't even past the "Hey, why don't we blow it up?" stage, nowhere near the "here's how we do it", much less the "Ok, here's the plan" phases.
If you think I'm defending these guys, you're mistaken. I'm a citizen of this country. I vote, and I expect my government to do what it's supposed to do. When the people who work for me (the gubment) jump the gun too early then proceed to make a big press event out of it anyhow, I'm not happy. If they let something go too far, I'm also not happy. Sucks to be them, it's hard to find that sweet spot where they have let the plan develop enough that the prosecution will be solid but not so far that it is actually in danger of happening.
If these guys are bad guys and they walk because the government messed up, I will be displeased, and you should be too. If they are not actually dangerous and the government misses a REAL plot because they were focussed on this, then I will also be displeased.
What's YOUR defense?
-
Jon and apparently you assumed these guys were incompetent, not me. I asked if it was due to race because that's all we really know about them.
It took planning on the part of the highschoolers and two ex-army sergeants, so what? Are you suggesting these guys are incapable of accomplishing what two highschoolers and two GIs did? Jon Stewart is certainly make light of this threat. Why?
If they found the Sears Tower too much of a challenge they might have sought an easier target and been susccessful. Conspiracy to commit murder is illegal.

Yes the liberals sway towards that side but if you'd quit trying to reinforce your right wing views, maybe you could find some humour in it. Nothing wrong with poking a little fun at every day ideas is there? Then again, maybe it's just immature humour, and the right wingers are too grown up and mature for it, i'm not sure.

Then why do the libs get all uptight about Coulter and Limbaugh? Nothing different between Dailey's show and Limbaugh, except a laugh track...
-
If the plot to destroy the wtc had been foiled I have little doubt Jon would have been poking fun at them practicing their crashes into the wtc using MS Flight Simulator. I would have laughed.

I guess you've never seen the daily show.
-
Don't conservatives get uptight about Coulter and Limbaugh as well? I mean, that's just a totally lost situation there. I've never read or heard anything of Ann Coulter's, however, I will agree with you that Limbugh's show can be a laugh track if you ask yourself how anyone could be so dumb...
Also, after the Daily Show, there is the COLBERT REPORT!!!! So you can get your straight liberal "news" and then you can get "conservative" views from Colbert. It's really quite fun.

The really sad thing is that both of those shows sometimes actually make more sense then the real news.

I rate them as having the same quality as CNN, if not better, and more comedic.;)

The Daily Show said the US govt is being overzelous in fighting terrorism.....I'm convinced now, these few are innocent! That's it, time to protest!

I wonder ... what is the sound a point being missed makes?
Guns? is it a "swish" or maybe Rip can help... how about "wooosh". Hey John... do you hear any "shoooming" noises?

Colbert pretends to be conservative but if I recall he's not quite right wing, he actually may be on the left! He did get his start through the conservative slander show...errr the Daily Show.
