Title: Chest injury
Post by: nirvana on July 12, 2006, 11:47:03 PM
It was a amateur mistake, and just simple carelessness, having said that, i'll begin.

Removing springs from a Dodge Caravan to to replace the bearing plates i decided, hell, take that nut off and the bearing plate will slip off, and it did....along with the rest of the assembly.  Luckily it went into my chest, not a foot up, into my face.  Anyway, as you can imagine it has caused some pain, but there is no visible bruise.  It just hurts like crazy, especially when i try to lift, take deep breaths, or move my arms in certain positions.  Is it possible that i bruised something behind the sternum?  I'd prefer NOT to see a doctor if this clears up in a few days.

Pete Conrad died from internal bleeding from a motorcycle accicdent that he thought was just something minor and didn't see a doctor.

See a doctor.

If that thing came off with as much force as I am thinking see a doctor. You might have some serious internal injuries and don't know it.

That's all the advise I am giving.

Wouldn't be the first time a  pneumothorax was caused by accidental blunt force trauma.

Good idea to go get looked at, if not to diagnose that possible collapsed lung, than to ensure any broken ribs that may have incurred won't have the possibility of causing one.

Strangely, there was an elderly woman last night that 'tore away' part of her diaphragm from just coughing repeatedly with pneumonia.

I don't know Mustaine, my chest is pretty damn solid.  If you hit the cavity just below the middle of the sternum, however, I will hit the ground faster then a speeding bullet.  Just pressing there with one finger I start to feel like the wind is leaving.

:O

get it checked bro, i cracked a rib about 3 years ago and it still hurts sometimes. got a small lump in my left side where the disfigured bone still sticks out to this day. I never got it checked for th first 6 months, then when i did they told me i might very easily have had to have a small surgery to take the splinters out and round off the sharp bits, but it is too late now.

never waste time getting ti checked, never know what youre dealing with exactly untill you do.

seems to me that you might have bruised some internal tissues and muscles.. thats not something you just brush off.. you could have damaged some of your lung tissue that could form some fluid.  get to the doc and let them do a chest x-ray to make sure that everything is in tact.. a straight shot to the chest from a compressed vehicle spring can do some considerable damage.

If you're dumb enough to look at a part that's holding a large compressed spring in place and then remove it without restraining the spring, you jut might make an early exit from this life due to easily possible worse mistakes.

Safety first allatime. I learned that from my early carreer doing field service on heavy equipment. Nothing as sobering as realizing you're doing aggressive stuff to a big machine aaaaaall alone out in the boonies somewhere and nobody will start missing you until tomorrow. Care beeful dood.

..and when you go to the Doctor, make sure you mention the fact you asked a bunch of flight sim geeks for medical advice on an internal injury  :)   Getting hurt is bad enough, having to rely on the advice of total strangers to seek prompt medical care....priceless ;)

Next time dont be in a hurry/lazy and use a spring compressor. People die from springs like that shooting out.

Go see the doc asap.

Umm, There's these things called spring compressor's, ya know.
And get it checked out, you could very easily have fractured your sternum.

What is that? Young, dumb, and ugly?  Yeah i'm a dumb teenager, no one told me about the compressor so I didn't ask.

And yes Batfink, my chest is strong, I wan't laying on the ground after it hit me, then again maybe Zidane's headbutt is like a speeding rain.  I'm an invincible teenager, didn't you guys know?

I've broken or bruised 13 ribs over my life. Football and being smaller than other players , Motocross , and plain stupidity.

GO TO THE DOC. They can't do anything for em if that's all it is. It will be sore for a couple of weeks ar least.

GO TO THE DOC and get it looked at just to make sure.

Find a new Mechanic to work for. If the guy didnt tell you have deadly springs like that can be he is a fool. Your parents would have owned his shop if you got killed.

Maybe thats their plan
;)

They DO own the shop.  Simple lapse in judgement, those are the ones that always kill you.  Wasn't paying attention for a second, got a little distracted, didn't remember a spring could take your head off.....etc.

Oh, it's feeling a tad bit better now, was a ***** to get out of bed this morning though, couldn't sit up.

I'm gonna walk it off til i'm halfway dying from internal bleeding or organ failure.  Parents cut the checks, if I complain about it enough i'll be in there.  I'm making no excuses, and the only one i'm blaming is myself.  They could have told me to use the machine, but I also have a voice to ask, so there's no case there.  Live and learn, problem is that you have to be alive to learn, right?

first off, it young dumb and full of cum.

and second, i was simply highlighting the irony of your injury after your cliams of having a strong chest.

i am certainly not doubting your calim, nor saying your injury was weak. you most certainly have strong chest if you took that spring full on and didnt lose alot of blood and/or consiouness.

karma seems to have caught up with you, often your soul's claims and boasts will be put to the test before you know it.

you passed! :)

Someone was talking about coming here to ask for medical advice.  Well, i'd trust some of you guys before i'd trust a doctor (sad, isn't it?), as well as the fact that most of you are older then me, and have been through, or seen someone else go through the same stuff.  Another thing, I didn't come telling some sob story about how you should pity me and none of you have, I came asking for advice and it was given unanimously.  I've been called stupid, dumb, young, etc. countless times and that's what I expected.  Save the pity for the next lad coming out of Iraq or some place.

It's also feeling about 75% better then what it did on Wednesday, but i'll probably go to the doctor sometime in the very near future to make sure.  Yeah i have had 3 days to go already but you know how it is, I have "more important things to do" or something.
