its noy illegal to drop objrcts out of aircraft as long as you make sure no persons or property on the ground is harmed.
I am not sure if psychological harm counts though :confused:

Idiots like those 2 kids will do more to harm aviation for other pilots than jusat about anything else. I can hear the calls for banning small planes again because of STUPID stunts lijke this.

Stupidity is contagious. The teenagers were stupid, there was a stupid reacton on the ground, law enforcement will never make that charge stick, and then to top it all off the moron that writes for that site imposed his interpretation upon readers.
Paper towels a deadly threat. Give me a break!

It would not have made national news (didn't as far as I could tell).
I seriously question the judgement of anyone that throws things out of an airplane over a football game. I truly believe that anyone who does this in today's climate is too judgement impared to retain a pilot's license.

Apathy,
I was a teenager once and recall it quite well thank you very much. One of the lessons teens have a problem learning is that actions have consequences. What may SEEM to be a harmless prank to them at the time may have deadly results. Does this make the action less reprehensible simply becausxe the prank was "only meant in fun"? Does that ease the grief of the family of the deceased because the person that caused, directly or indirectly the death of their loved one was only "playing a joke"?
Think of it this way. After 9/11 anything to do with planes and people on the ground has an entirely new significance. Dropping things from an aircraft over a populated area that causes a disruption or injury on the ground is ILLEGAL. This stunt was tantamount to going into a theater and screaming fire. No one in today's society has a problem understanding that scenario but you seem to have a problem understanding that that isn't the only way pranksters can cause mayhem and severe consequences just by having "fun".

Last year we had to close school twice due to anthrax threats phoned in. I am just waiting for the first foolish child to try it this year.
Used to be the surest way to go to prison was to counterfeit money. Murderers walk the streets every day, but anything that has the potential to overturn society gets immediate and sweeping attention.
Indeed, the furor of the last few months should have warned these boys it was a bad idea. Now they get to experience firsthand the dictatorial impunity of the FAA. No, they won't get a second chance to perform this act. ;)

From what I read they dropped rolls of paper towels. Basically tp'ing the field on a large scale. Nobody got hurt, nobody was ever in any danger, it wasn't as if they dropped powder or did anything to connect this to anthrax or terrorism. It was a prank, it did cause a disturbance and upset some people but last time I checked that was what pranks where intended to do.
People need to lighten up and get there sense of humor back, or just get one if they never had one.
As far as I’m concerned their prank had most of the ingredients for a good prank.
1. Nobody got hurt or was endangered.
2. No property damage.
3. Not offensive (no slander or belittling of others).
4. Don't get caught (ok, they screwed this one up, but 3 outta 4 aint bad)
I think the authorities are way over-reacting to this. This is the kinda thing that should be settled with suspending his pilots license for a couple months and a few weekends of community service (just to teach them to be alittle more clever next time)
Really what’s the point of surviving all this if we can't have any fun while we're here.

People do need to lighten up. I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who said something about never trading your liberties for a bit of temporary security.

I think you need to reread my post about "pranks". It's still appropriate. What really confuses me is that you seem to think that someone having "fun" is ok as long as no one is hurt or killed. What about the fun those in the stands were having that was interupted by this foolish and illegal stunt? Don't they deserve to remain unmolested?
FYI even before 9/11 this would have been illegal and the FAA has taken a dim view of any "pranks" involving aircraft. This was a stupid act and it has repercussions. Whatever is decided they brought it on themselves. I am curious what the results will be myself.

actually i think it's ok as long as nobody is endangered. not just hurt or killed.
so basically if they would have done something that could have actually hurt someone then that would be wrong, even if nobody actually got hurt. it is far from ok to put someone else's life, safety, or property at risk for your own amusement. but I cant really conceive of a way that tp'ing a field with paper towels from a plane could have done any damage to anybody, the worst it could do is give some authoritarian with to much time on his hands something to get his panties in a bunch about.

Yeah, I remember back on Guam, being a vandal teenager at 13. My cousins had climbed to the top of a 4-story building under construction just after sunset. It was being built right along the main drag, Marine Drive. Usually in such a position we'd use our BB-guns to snipe at passing cars, but that night my cousins were ambitious. They brought large rocks with them to the top, and proceeded to drop them on cars, roughly 50-60 feet below. And they actually hit a car in the front windshield. I was told the impact shattered the entire windshield, and the guy driving nearly crashed. Thankfully, it had hit on the passenger side, and no one else was in the car. But that was one pissed guy. He even drove down the side road, looking for who did it, and crashed my relatives' fiesta, looking for anybody to blame. My cousins had immediately melted into the surroundings, so they got off. But, jeez, I couldn't believe they had done that.
But, then, there was the morning I was shooting arrows into the sky while construction crews worked on the top of that building, a mere 100 feet away. It's amazing how far an arrow will go laterally when you shoot it straight up...
God, I still marvel at the fact that neither my cousins, nor my brother, nor I, nor anyone we had victimized, either consciously or otherwise, was physically harmed by all the unbelievable crap we did.

Oh, yeah, back in the '70's on Guam it was no big deal to burn your lawn trimmings in a 55-gal. drum. So, often during the weekend usually later in the afternoon, you'd have relatives/neighbors burning their leaves and whatnots in these drums in their yards. Well, we liked to put fircrackers in there, then wait for them to go off - BOOM! - get the adults riled up, and run off laughing. After a time, we hit on the idea of using blanks, since you didn't need to light anything, just toss it in - and wait - BOOM! There was a gun store nearby, Kimo's, which had a beatup old warehouse in the back, and we had figured out a way to get in there, though we never seemed able to get into where the guns were - that was very securely locked. Anyway, we were able to score a lot of blanks of all calibers, from .22 to .233 to .30. There were also real bullets there too, and though we took some of those we knew enough not to go tossing real bullets in a roaring fire - well, almost all of us.
So, one day we're all hanging out with the family, relatives just gossiping, passing the time, and a neighbor of ours is cleaning their yard, and burning it. So, we take off to get some of our stash, and see if we can get a few in before we get caught. The operation is a success, and we all just sit back, and wait for the commotion. Sure enough, the blanks start going off. The adults are looking back at the drum, then at us suspiciously, and we're trying hard not to look guilty. Then, there's this big BOOM!!!, and even we look at the drum in surprise. Of course, the adults are getting angry, and asking what did we do, and how many more are in there. We convince them there aren't any, or many, more left, then haul off before somebody gets a whippin'(which were common in my day). The thing is, we're actually pretty pissed too, because somebody in the group went overboard, and tossed in something that almost really got us in trouble. So, we start asking each other what we tossed in there. Nobody seems to have put anything stronger than a .22 long blank, until we come to the last one - a fringe member really. He's younger, and doesn't know much about bullets and guns, so we have to bring him to the stash, and let him show us what he threw in there. Well, he looks around, then picks up a bullet, not a blank, a .223. "This one," he says. We freak out and hammer it into his head that you do not toss in bullets into a fire, much less the 'feared' M-16 bullet that can "go in your shoulder, then come out your butt." On one side of our neighborhood was a massive natural cliff, and on the other, the ocean. I figure that stray .223 went in one of those two directions.

Well, as to your "harmless prank"...
There ain't no such thing when it comes to a stadium full of people, and doubly so in an environment of tension following national events such as 9/11. I work in a corporation that has to control such events, and it isn't funny to me in the least. Lots of bad things can happen in mere seconds just because of, yes, paper towels tossed from an airplane.
The only way to make a stadium full of people laugh is to be standing on the stage with a mic in your hand...

i can see why this sort of thing would piss a guy in your position off. i sure you get alot of crap being in a crowd control/security feild. i know 'messing with the barneys' was prime entertainment on many of my teenage outtings
