Title: Paper Shredders
Post by: fuzeman on July 18, 2006, 02:57:16 PM
Want to get one, an electric one.

What's a good brand and model? Not a heavy duty industrail one, just for the home.
Although I have thought about shredding our newspapers for composting.

Fellows?

In my experience (I've only bought ones under $50, so maybe the 100+ ones are better) any heavily used paper shredder isn't going to last more than a year or two (I only use it for shredding bills, credit card statements, etc). I've bought three, all different brands, and they've all had their problems.  Currently have an Ativa that's been the best yet, but now it has some badly bent blades that mean you don't get good shredding in the center of paper.  But as I said, it was the best yet.

Make sure it crosscuts. Far more security, and, if you do decide to make compost, the smaller bits will decompose faster.

Definately get one that "chunks' the paper and not just long strings. I bought one 3 years ago and Office Depot for under $50.00. It's light duty but it does just fine for shredding bills and medical papers. This isn't rocket science and a light duty shredder is far far better than just tossing your personal papers into the trash.
