Going to buy one after driving it today.
Power and 40+ mpg on the highway and 30-35 mpg in the city as well. The wife likes it also and it has plenty of get up and run as well.
I suggest you guys check it out if you want a good economical ride with power.

The 600-700 Miles on a tank of gas is nice too.

i got a 2002 jetta wagon, 2 liter though.
Wonderful car. Recommend it to everyone. :D
-
Going to see one of those tomorrow... Just got a new job that is a 64 mile commute each way.
My Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 only gets about 13 MPG...
I think the fuel savings alone ($168.00/month) just about warrants the purchase of this car.
-
Nice car, and it's still built in germany i believe.
just get it with a stick, more fun ya know :)
-
Unfortunately you can't get it with the "tiptronic" automatic transmission. I drove an Audi A4 with that transmission and a GLS Jetta (non-TDI) and they rocked but fuel mileage was nothing like the TDI.
TDI Jetta's start around $20,000 and can top out around $27,000 if you load them with everything.
-
My father has one of those Jetta TDIs and I once got 48 mpg in it, pretty much an all highway trip though. However we did 80-85 mph all the way and still got that mileage.
-
Love the looks of Jetta's too! Every time I pass one on the freeway, we seem to be admiring each others cars. :) 40 MPG?! Wow, beats my 30 MPG (but then again, 0-60 in 5.9 seconds in an M54 engine will cut back on gas milege just a hair.. ;))
Good choice of ride, be prepared for Creamo to hammar you for buying a foreign car. :D

Good choice! I wanted a TDI Jetta when it was time for me to get my own car (back in '97 so it was the A3 body). Ended up with a 2.0L since no TDI's were supposedly in stock at the time and most of my family can't drive 5-speed :(. With the TDI's great torque and turbo you can have a great fast car that you don't have to downshift a lot with :). There are new chips for TDI's which increase the Hp a bit. In europe I think VW Motorsport raced an A3 Golf TDI somewheres.
One of the stupid things about Hawaii is the fuel prices. We're paying about $1.90/gallon for 89 octane, while on base it's about $1.60 or so (I'm civilian so I can't use the pumps :( ). Even worse is the fact that diesel is more expensive than 87, and sometimes even 89. We've even had a gov commission investigating the prices here and some litigation was involved. Net result: status quo. Can't wait till I get a diesel eng so I can someday run it on used cooking oil.
Sorry for the rant... good luck on getting your TDI Reschke!

Well mine is one order as of today but I am not supposed to receive it until after the beginning of the year.
I was told it was due to the limited production run because of a strike at the plant which makes the engine and the actual car. I will buy that explanation since a buddy of mine had to go to Atlanta to pick his up. It was transported from Orlando to Atlanta for him.
Anyway this gives me time to pull my wife out of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and get her used to a car again.
Anyone want to buy a Grand Cherokee with 55k on it in great shape for $16,000?
Anyone, anyone at all? Yeah I didn't think so.
-
Reschke , plant where the strike was is Pueblo Mexico.
If you're getting a wagon, it should be coming from Germany.
I had 99.5 Jetta made in Mexico. When i went to buy new one, main requirement was: I'm buying a german car, it whoopee better come from Germany.
From what i know wagons are only made in Germany ( tha'ts where mine came from ) i'm not sure about TDI's.
Did you get GL GS or GLS ?
Also, what color ? :)
For best VW info go to www.vwvortex.com (http://www.vwvortex.com)

Sounds like a racist statement to me, what difference does it make? Its ENGINEERED in Germany, the assembly should make no difference, what?

Shouldn't, but it did.
I bought a german car, and i want it made in Germany. Mexican assimbled VWs have 70% parts manufactured in Mexico. They carry rather poor maintenance record.
Would you buy a toyota made in North Carolina and slap "Buy American Cars" sticker onto it ? :)
Putz
Racist statement ? Grasping at straws there Ripster...
:D
Try again :)
-
Do you have proof that they have a poor maintenence record there? They HAVE to adhere to the standards that VW imposes on them, its called "Quality Assurance"..certain guidelines and standards must be met, and there are plenty of VW folks there that keep an eye on it. Sorry pal, you sound like your grouping Mexicans in with "poor quality"...that is not the case.

No Rip, read carefully.

Did i say anywhere that mexican cars were poor quality ? Nope.
Did i imply it ? Hell yes, but you can't prove it. For all practical purposes it might have been just my boner for German cars. ( i'm sure FW 190 fans can relate :D )
Even if i was to state that "mexican assimbled VWs are poorer quality then German ones" which i did in my second post, you have no means of measuring it, or proving it otherwise.
Especially seeing how i owned a Mexican made and German made VWs in the path, and you had neither.
Also, Pueblo plant recently went on strike for over a month. I would imagine that things were not all well in QA heaven of WV in Pueblo...( btw, whole hoopla was over pay, which is rather amazing considering the fact that VW cars sell for the same price whether they come from Mexico or Germany )
So Ripsnort, would you like me to put you out of your misery and give you something nice and racist to whine about, so that it would be easier for you to file me into one of your categories ? Liberals/racists/rapists/murderers/anti-american/british/muslim/traiors ?
Would you like me to help you to select few ?
:D

Very clever at masking your true feelings Fd, bet your mother is proud of you.

Shheeeesh.
We fly the flag, we sing the anthem, we buy foriegn cars.
There is no hope for us.

Hangtime get it through your skull: AMERICAN CARS SUCK! :)
It's better for US industry to stick to things they do well, and cars ain't one of them!
So I vote with my dollars to push US industry into areas where they can compete.
Not that I'm a fan of VW - blech! But if some people need that "German Engineering" illusion of superiority so they can rationalize the fact that they got ripped off, I wish them luck. :)

From what I was told by the salesman the 2002 TDI Jettas are made in Germany and Austria. Also the color is Tornado Red with beige leather interior and the GLS model.
-
I drove a Golf for years. It was the funnest car to drive that I have ever been behind the wheel of. It lasted without anything other than regular maint. for 200,000 miles, when I sold it. It was made in Mexico. Never even replaced the clutch.
I would love to own another VW, I don't think they are the finest cars, but bang for the buck and fun factored in, I don't think they can be beat.

Well no matter what that rice burning , jap crap drivin Funked has to say ;) you will Love That TDI engine.
98 Beetle TDI (and the heater works!!)
PS whats the deal with diesel being more expensive than Gasoline in the states?
Talk about a rip off... Whats the fine for using the truck pumps?
-
You can use truck pumps legally but dont let them catch you using agricultural diesal. They can tell farm diesal becuase it has a different dye in it. IRS will definitely rip you a new one for that and I have seen diesal checkpoints once before in Texas. By the way, I love and admire German cars and engineering too, but my favorite vehicle is the one I own and its about as American as it gets: Ford F-250 superduty 4x4 with powerstroke diesal. The only bad thing is I'll guarantee you that I dont get anywhere near the mileage of my dads Jetta TDI, but then again I didnt buy it for mileage. With 7.3 litres of diesal power thundering away under the hood who gives a fart about mileage anyway! :D
-
Just bought a 2002 XTerra, V6 with a stick. I love it. Best 4x4 I've owned since my 89 Bronco. I've already taken it offroad twice (notice I go off-road at least once a month, I didn't buy a SUV to use it as a damn station wagon  ) It's smooth, has nice power and with the limited-slip rear end, will go anywhere (when I say anywhere, I mean if you know what you're doing ;)).
BTW, I believe it was built in Tennesse :D
