Title: Florida Keys
Post by: AquaShrimp on July 19, 2006, 03:15:39 PM
Has anyone here been to the Florida Keys?  I've never had the chance to make it down there, but I would like to.  Looks like a very beautiful place.  Is there alot of crime?  The apartments sure are expensive, one month costs from $800-$1600 for a 1 bedroom.

I have 2 time shares in Marathon Key at the Hawks Nest.  I live in NE Florida and head there every year for an annual fishing trip with friends and family.

No way would I live there....

Lotsa Cops writing speeding tickets is about all i know about the crime rate. As for rent I guess it would depend on how close you are to Key West, which being a huge tourist attraction can be quite expensive.

Why wouldnt you live there?

I really like the ocean, I'm a scuba diver and a fisherman.  I thought the Florida Keys would be the best place for those activities in the continental U.S.

It's mostly a Tourist area as such costs are higher. It's great place to visit and vacation though...

If you want to move near the ocean and fish there's plenty of coast line in the US...:p

Real estate is expensive there, but frankly everything else in the Keys (except Key West) is dirt cheap.  I worked at a golf club in Key Largo a few years back and we went out all the time... beers were about $2.50 on average, mixed drinks $3.50-$4.00, and you could eat very well for no more than $15 at dinner.  Oh and did I mention fresh caught fish is the best?

:)

I go down there fairly often.  It is very expensive to live in the Keys, and it can be pretty trashy/touristy in places.  Not many who live there and work in the service industries can afford to own thier own home, so you have a good percentage of lower socio-economic types who are willing to put up with high cost of living just to be down there. There are a lot of bums and weekend drunks down there, too.  You can't really leave rods, reels and gear unsecured very long before it will disappear.  It is great fishing and diving on reefs, off shore Ocean side and on the Gulf side too.  If ocean side is too rough you can always do something gulf side. The Marquesas and Dry Tortugas are not all that far from Key West either.  Bimini and surrounding cays, just 55 miles or so off Miami is pretty fantastic too.

sheesh, its bad enough in Ft. Lauderdale Eagler!  My homeowner's ins company (POE) went bankrupt after Wilma.  I'm still waiting for service on my claim and here we are in season again already.

What about Key Largo, is it pretty trashy?  Are they any of the Keys that aren't full of poor people?

We've got a dune buggy (rail buggy actually) thats street legal.  I think it would be a blast driving all over Keys in it.

I tell you what though, South West Florida is really nice.  I went down to Bonita Springs/Naples earlier this year, very beautiful place.  Pristine beaches, nature reserves, seaside parks.   Most of the people I met down there weren't Florida natives, they had moved down from mid-west.

I had mine canceled this year and was < 30 days from having to sign up with citizens at 150% rate increase. Luckily I found someone who would do it for only 40% more ..
