I just got back from the hospital. I have 2 blown disks the L3/4 and the L4/5. Both arre blown to the side and a bit forward. One is to the left and the other is to the right. It creates a WONDERFUL experiance of pain to have a nerve at the spinal column get impinged by a chunk of disk. It makes you leag very weak and it burns like fire from the hip to the toes. Loverly. This is far worse than the bone pain I had from bone surgery, broken bones, torn ligaments etc. all from the past.
Today they did the first real "treatment" other than physical therapy. I got 2 different injections into the area between the disks and next to the spinal column with both lidacaine and steroids. That feels SO damn good especially as they have to stop and start after checking placement of each needle using a flouroscope. Afterwards the lidacaine wears off and you are left with a very very pissed off injection site.............
I wanna kill Doctors, if they would just bend over my recliner so I can wrap my hands around their throat..........
I know I'm supposed to feel better tomorrow but it ain't tomorrow yet!:cry

well, at least you dont have a hardcore phobia that renders you incapable of getting even a small needle that doesnt even fully peirce the skin without breaking someones hand...

I can remember the worst place I ever got a needle was in the upper front teeth...the one that makes your eye quiver and then water.

pretty much almost like me.
simple blood test they have to use a butterfly needle, and i still yelp and jump and can't look.
3 months in a hospital in HS, 3+ blood tests a day then, and 1000's since and i still have the same reaction.

OMG I don't even wanna talk about back pain..I was down for almost 2 months with my back last year. Slipped a disk...I can't remember which one though..I was pretty heavily medicated.:aok
And I don't like needles...which is strange cause I have 15 tattoos and not a bit afraid of a tat gun..which is a needle..but I cringe in terror when the doctor comes to harpoon me with one.

When I was in fifth grade, one of my testicles swelled to an unusually large and potentially hazardous size.
I went to the doctor with my father and the doctor believed that it must be full of fluid.
So... practicing his art of investigative medicine he decided that a hypodermic needle would be the best tool to test this theory.
He tested it eleven times.
To this day, if I mention the event, the color will drain from my father's face.

Spinal taps are a real pleasure. I had one a few years ago and the people there were so kind as to wheel the monitor around in front so I could witness the process firsthand. It was awesome.

OUCH reminds me of when I got a cortizone shot in my shoulder.
The doc pulls out this cartoon needle. This thing is like 2 feet long 12 inches of it are needle the rest looks like a friggin grease gun. He proceeds to tell me that 90% of this fluid in this friggin torpedo is novicane so it wont hurt much. Well to tell the truth it didnt hurt at all. UNTILL THE FRIGGIN NOVICANE WORE OFF. It was like he had inserted a hot coal into my shoulder joint it friggin burned for hours. I hate doctors they are evil.

Mav I have L4/L5 compression fracture lower back and a I10/I11 compression right behind the heart towards the Heart. Best thing I ever did on the L4/L5 was accupuncture. It will work wonders for you Bud..... the higher compression fracture cure is just a fetal position in the bath tub with the shower water on HOT screaming cuss words in many languages.

I like needles, especially during blood tests when they can't find the vein, it's good stuff. Of course, that's isn't in my back...or shoulder...or anywhere super sensitive.

actually I hosed my back when I was 20 something lifting an old 15hp outboard motor over a fence to go fishing where there wasn't a boat ramp. It wasn't the weight, it had something to do with the twisting motion. I'd done it dozens of times before. Just this one time my back said enough ...

Actually it was probably the cumulative effect of you having done it dozens of times before.
Used to work at a place where it was mandatory everyone take this lecture on backs every year.
I was there almost 10 years so after listing to it for 10 years I managed to retain what was taught.
In any event. Back injuries are rarely caused by one single incident alone But are usually the result of doing the same thing wrong over a period of time till the back finally gives out.
Like you said. Your "Back said enough".

I was chasing one of the more Einsteinish of the burglar trade through an industrial structure. Only probelm was that this section of the company had been sealed up and filled with hydrogen phosphide gas. The, also Einsteinish crew who did the gassing did not post the mandatory warning signs , nor did they notify me as was required.
When using this stuff, (Phostoxin), it is supposed to be used by a licensed applicator, then the building sealed for 24 hours, with warning signs on all exits and entrances. After a 24 hour period the building is supposed to be opened up, exhaust fans put in place and let "clear" for 24 hours before anyone is allowed to reenter.
Great stuff this is. According to the Texas Medical Library and the AMA , there is a record of only one other person in the U.S. entering a building with this stuff in use and surviving other than myself.
The end result was a few years of sheer fun.
Arterial blood gas tests are also a blast. I had a couple of these during this period. A needle that looks like a tire iron is inserted in the wrist area, down to the main artery and a sample taken from there. Great fun. It will break up a dull day.
I`m still enjoying the effects of this stuff, plus now I have numerous discs in my neck which are deteriorating. Never a dull day for me. :)

You have my sympathy ..I Blew out my L5/S1 disc.
I hope the injections actually help you. It only relieved the pain for 24 hours for me. Yes the pain is quite exquisite.
If you haven't had an MRI yet get one . My injury was work related and they kept fighting with my doc. Once I had the MRI done they found that the disc was taking up 40% of the spinal chord canal. Injections are not going to help a herniation that big. Been 6 months since my operation to fix and I am just now starting to feel more like my old self.
Good luck and I hope the herniation is not as bad as mine was.

Edit: And don't wait to long if it has to be operated on.
If you do the pain after the operation will be replaced by numbness. Like I said been 6 months and parts of my leg and foot are still pins and needles.

having manged to break my neck twice somehow avoiding paralysis i truly feel your pain mav.

I had the MRI and X-rays in early June That's when they confirmed herniation in 2 disks. So far not much if any protrusion into the collum area but there is little space between the vertibra now and extensive bone spurs due to the chronic muscle spasms I just lived with for years. Unfortunately I have to follow the medical insurance formula until there is definate nerve intrusion like blader and bowel issues. Then it becomes an immediate surgical situation. I'm crossing fingers that it stabilizes.

Yikes that does truly suck. The bad part about the waiting that long is they might have to do fusion and not discectomy. I have hear tell takes 2x as long to recover from. Once again my sympathies and good luck.

Let me know the next time you are in Tulsa and I'll turn you on to my accupunturist. She is in her Mid 50's, was a Dr. in the Chinesse Army. She knows her chit. She told me I was Diabetic before my own Dr. figured it out.
She's a great Woman. Hates Spiders though... That's a story I gotta tell ya. Funny as hell too.

Mac, I asked about acupuncture here recently.
I know some think it is just bunk, some claim great results.
I`m about ready to try anything to get Mr. Pain to take a friggen vacation. :)
Can you give me some rough idea about the cost per session?
