Hopefully, we in America will have our own "Happy Bin Laden Day" some day. :D
In 1605, Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of
Parliament. Before they were able to carry out their plan they were caught, tortured and
executed.
Every year since then we have traditionally celebrated his failure by letting off fireworks
and burning an effigy of 'Guy'.

It's also know as 'Bonfire Night'. Basically everyone builds a large bonfire with an effigy on top, and well... sets it on fire. Kids have competitions to make the best 'Guy'.
Also, in the days preceeding the 5th November, kids generally take their effigy around houses or sit on street corners saying 'Penny for the Guy'. I used to love that part as a kid. :D
I went to bonfire parties on saturday and sunday night. I expected there to be effigies of Bin Laden but was dissapointed. Everyone I talked to had the same idea though. ;)
Now I'm all grown up (well almost), it's just an excuse to get pissed, set fire to some wood and let off fireworks.
I hope you get a national holiday for you particular version. :)

I remember that at Tynemouth, think Edwards Bay. Huge bonfire on the beach. Had no idea what it was about, I was only 12. After reading Rip's post - still don't. Seem to be making a holiday out of a criminal. Maybe we need a Timothy McVie day. Any excuse to drink beer while playing with fire and fireworks :)
