Title: THIS is the worst place to be:
Post by: Saxman on July 22, 2006, 01:55:00 AM
to everyone in the fight over 76/82 area tonight. GREAT action from all sides.

I took these screens during a defensive scrap over 76 after the first Rook attempt to take 82 failed thanks to a BnZ 190 killing a couple Goons. After a wave of a Spit and a flight of 26's were dealt with, this high-alt Hurri makes a run on a Rook, and eventually gets dragged down to where I can nose in and close on him. I kick my gear out to stay with him as he first turns, then goes vertical. I follow him up (I've been closing pretty rapidly at this point, so have the advantage in E).

Unfortunately, my best chance at a shot comes when the Hurrican dissapears into the sun and I can't see him, otherwise I KNOW I would have had him dead. Yes, I know my gear are out, but until WW tells me otherwise, I insist that they stabilized me and kept me from spinning when I hung on my prop. :D

It's hard to tell from this pic (darn you photobucket for resizing on me!! My webspace is gone tho and it's the best I could come up with. :( I WILL replace this with the full-sized pic if I can get my web space back) but I was REALLY coming close to him. Not bad for shooting blind. :D

Meanwhile, as I'm hanging on my prop shooting at the sun and praying I put enough lead into him so he can't reverse and make me eat cannon, AKFloppy comes zooming up in his F6F, and all the sudden this Hurricane is in an even UGLIER spot (this is, by far, my favorite pic in the group).

Floppy has so MUCH E, in fact, that as I reviewed the film I discovered that what LOOKED like him passing ABOVE the Hurri and taking some 20mm in the belly was actually a collision (at least it was on my film). As such, I didn't realize that the debris I was seeing after Floppy went "poof" included the Hurri's horizontal stabs so I kept shooting and getting hits on his wings.

Finally both myself and the Hurricane ran out of juice and nosed-down (to my relief, we both kind of flopped over and went down in tandem), and before I get vis again he's bailed, and I got the assist.

Of course, reviewing the film afterwards I'm thinking "WTF?!" as it appeared that the guy who did the most damage had gone "pop" before the Hurri bailed. :p

Dmn, what's your convergence set too?  This guy should have been dead meat in your first pic there!  Good luck with the gear thingy deal! :aok

D350.

Like I said though, he COMPLETELY disappeared into the sun when I had my best shot, (in the first cap I was almost totally blinded.) and by the time I saw him again I was barely keeping the nose up.

cool AAR sax :)

about the gear thing.....im almost 100% sure that when hanging on the prop my D-hog is more stable with the gear in.

In my mind the only time for gear out is when you have made a grave error with your throttle work, and need to burn off alot more E very fast.

again, this is personal preferance, but i find that once you drop the gear you'd better be winning pretty quick or youre going to be in big trouble aainst an experienced pilot.

when i see an enemy with gear down, i know he is gunna go for overshoot, and i act accordingly.

when i dont see the gear out, i dont have the warning, and am much more likely to waste presious seconds when i should be dumping E.

again, speakin from my experiences, not fact!

sweet pics!

I actually almost had him BEFORE we went vertical, I just couldn't get enough lead on him (that was the point when I dropped my gear).

And I'm VERY pissed at Photobucket for resizing my pictures. I WANT MY WEBSPACE BACK! Stupid admin pulling the plug on the whole dammed site providing it. :furious

If I\'m BnZing I\'ll usually leave mine on for more loiter time. But I drop \'em again if I need to maneuver.
