Title: Testing bare metal on B-17's
Post by: Kev367th on July 22, 2006, 08:36:41 AM
Still not 100% happy, needs more contrast, but it's close.

Not nearly enough specularity in the materials file. Mare metal acts like a giant reflective mirror, even from long range.

After some reflection (no pun intended) I think you're right. A bit more contrast, maybe, would make it "pop" more.

Worked out what the problem is -

Scale.

Will have to come up with a different gradient fill for buffs with a bigger number of 'colors' and with a bigger difference between them.
Its the relatively small area on the bitmap which is then scaled up to the model thats the problem.
Doesn't happen with fighters, less scaling up.

Forgot to add -

Think I found a reasonably good gradient fill -

That looks pretty good. Are you open to a nitpick? It's not about the metal gradient.

Always open to a picnic :).  .

Go ahead.

Just let me affix my "Picker of Nits" star badge... Okay there we go.

The OD anti glare on the engines should start at the top center (12 oclock looking at the radial face) and arc down 1/3 the side of the cowling, stopping at either 4 oclock or 8 oclock depending on which side of the aircraft it's on.

Default had it start at 11 oclock and go to 3, or start at 9 and go to 1 (depending on the side) which isn't exactly accurate.

Like I said, it's a nit. Consider it picked.

*takes off the badge, puts it away*

EDIT: I'm not entirely sure if the outer engines had OD, either. I left them on, on mine. I know at least one model kit a LOOOONG time ago that said to only paint the inner engines like that. Of course, it was of pathetic quality, and possibly was a poor source of info.

Fixed.

All pics I've found show them on both inner and outer engines.

Next nit please ;) .

Oh, that one? That is the rose petal that has been clipped to give the rose more character.

I thought it was intentional XD

jest a thought from a texture mapper dood from long ago ..who loves the B-17..

When I did the textures for AW bare metal planes ..I took my cues right from photographs of the planes I could find ..(I have a LOT of them)

..since game engines can't do all the reflections there are, as the texture mapper ..you have to put some in. Not too much .. just enough to hint at it ..and the human eye-brain interface will put in the rest because it expects it to be there.

ie: a little brighter, more contrast on topside ..a little duller, less contrast on the bottom side ..a 'horizon' line down the fuselage (I chose level flight attitude, cause that's where you see them most when yer flyin em')

..a little 'concrete' color below the horizon line, darkening as the texture progressed to bottom center of fuse, cowl, etc.

For topside, you gotta mix a lil blue in ..these planes dint fly in massively bad weather (solid gray skies) if they could help it.. it was partly cloudy or clear on best days.

For examples you can check out some stuff still up at +mia's web site dedicated to the San Francisco Veteran Pilot's Association:

http://www.worldwar2pilots.com/ww2GrayEagleHangar.htm

-GE ( combat planes weren't museum peices, they leaked, had patches,
..and that new aluminum glaring shine dint last long, but bare aluminum even 2 years old still reflects rainbows of color )

thx Motley .. right now I am eyeballin 'pre-req's' and then finishin my Registered Nurse AA degree .. then I will be lookin at a bachelor's degree in same ..motivated mostly by how much I enjoy bein a nurse, and the desire to do more ..and the pay is very good as you bump up :)

It will be awhile before I come home an just dive into a 'skin' project.
(also looking into buildin another project car over the next few years..gonna get out an *do* stuff .. yanno?)
