Title: Flyboys trailer
Post by: Waffle on July 22, 2006, 10:48:35 PM
Well, I thought it was going to be cool when I saw the articles about the filming, but it looks like it's going to be a little hokey - ala "pearl harbor" style.

Looks like the CG guys got a little carried away, but at least they are using some real planes for footage.

Never even knew this was coming - thanks, Waffle!

Now I thought I remembered hearing that they were making a new one about the Tuskegee Airmen...  But then I also thought it went by this name...  Anyone know if there is actually going to be another Tuskegee Airmen movie, or did someone simply see the black pilot from Flyboys and come to a dumb conclusion?

I heard from a guy at work about a WW2 one coming out too Vudak. Said he had seen the trailer. Im betting it was this one because he doesnt know the diffference between a P-51 and a frisbee.

On a side note, if any of you are slowly but surely working your gf/wife through your old movie favorites, better get Blue Max outta the way PRONTO, as she'll never want to watch it after she sees this one.

(Despite the fact that, I'm willing to bet at least, the Blue Max will turn out to be the much better film - though hopefully I'll get to eat those words :aok ).

cool, americans fighting Jasa 11 Triplanes day in day out, shooting down zep's, fighting the british who are clearly arrogant and need a good punching, black american first world war pilot to please the "race discrimination" crybabies...

looks great :)

that was filmed at the RAF training base RAF Halton btw, IIRC they also made tons of replicas of first world war a/c for filming.

Wonders when some of the Brits will understand that Hollywood and
historical accuracy are mutually exclusive.

Isn't that the truth. The only thing you need to make the movie "based off a true story" it seems is someone's name or similarity to a real event.

Yes.  Eugene Jacques Bullard was an American that flew for France in WWI.

As crasy as he may be in his personal (or not so personal life), you have to admit tom cruise is a great actor...

Ya i think i read about Jacques, wasnt he a boxer before he enlisted? I think he ended up being rewarded with a job operating elevators in a hotel after the war. :(

Tom Cruize a good actor?  One could argue his craft is good but i never really thought of him as anything more than average, I find him enoying for some reason, seems when ever he walks outside the action genre he falls on his face.

Oh dear, I read about the film in Airspace magazine and had high hopes. Then I watched the trailer. Even allowing for a touch of hype in order to entice the uncommitted viewer. I am disappointed. I now suspect a hokey plot as well.

Pearl Harbour - The prequel

Did anyone ever tell Hollywood that the Germans didn't all fly red Dr.Is for 4 years?

Apparently the whole Imperial Luftwaffe was staffed with Richtofen clones.

Fighting a war that wasn’t theirs, these young, naïve adventure-seekers learned the true meaning of love, brotherhood, heroism, courage and tolerance.

:huh

With a write-up like that, maybe they should call this movie "Broke Back Flyboys"

Was just thinking the same. But hell, as far as Hollywood and the idiots there are concerned historical accuracy isn't something one should care about. After all, they did type it is based on an actual event.

Btw, did anyone notice the Bi and Tri planes sprialing uppwards and rolling better then a Spit 16?

This looks to be a seriously idiotic and bad movie, far worse then Pearl Harbor (Pearl Harbor was atleast entertaining with some cool dogfights albite very inaccurate, but nice action).

And WHY DA F*** did he run down the Zepelin in the end? Thought they were making a realistic movie? Not a clone of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow".

No... this is a movie I will surely go and see but with very very low expectations, that way it can hopefully only get better.

I THINK the guy running down the Zepplin was one of the top-side gunners. If you watch closely you can see the one plane crash into or near a gun mount. So if there's only one way to go to avoid the flaming plane about to land on your head...

Also, I'd just like to point out that the only German planes we SEE are the red Dr.Is. We don't know the context of the different dogfights shown in the trailer. That could all be from one dogfight in the middle of the movie.

Just as a point of order, I think I remember reading somewhere Richtoffen's squadron DID use predominantly red aircraft as their "base" color, with the individual markings over that.

I just say wait and see. I'm interested, and I WILL see it. Too many people are reading WAY too much (good AND bad) into trailers. They're COMMERCIALS, guys.

And hey now Wilbus, what's wrong with Sky Captain? :furious

Yes, but as this movie is based on the Lafayette Escadrille, the question should be were there any Black flyers in the LE?  I don't remember reading about any - seems like it was mostly a lot of rich, ivy league type white boys. (who kicked some Hun butt when they got there - as well as getting theirs kicked too....)

BTW - wasn't there soe movie about Iwo Jima being filmed in Iceland or Greenland or something because they also had black sand beaches?  I remember seeing some articles about it, but for the life of me can't remember the name.  What ever happened to that one?

I looked up Bullard earlier, and he flew with the Lafayette Escadrille. Maybe that's who the black character in the movie is?

I also looked up the LE on Wiki (ok, yeah, I know, not the most accurate source of info). Jean Reno's character for sure IS historical (IMDB lists him as playing the Escadrille's commander, Cpt. Georges Thenault). I haven't tried to match the IMDB character names with any others so don't know how many were real people and how many are fictionalized.

The Iwo Jima film is actually TWO movies, I THINK being done by Clint Eastwood. One is Flags of our Fathers, focusing on the Marines who raised the flag (I don't remember if it's about the REAL group, or the guys who did the second and more famous larger one from the photo). The second is Black Sand, Red Sun or something like that, and focuses on the Japanese and is being filmed IN Japanese with subtitles.

Read a story a while back about how even though there was a language barrier, Eastwood greatly enjoyed working with the Japanese actors, and vice-versa. Both movies are slated for release next year, I think, and AFAIK they were also filmed ON Iwo Jima.

Maybe thinking of "Flags of Our Fathers", directed by Clint Eastwood?  It is coming.

He also said he plans on doing one from the Japanese side, tenatively called "Lambs Before the Wind".

EDIT:

Bah, should learn to read the thread befor eposting.  Saxman beat me to it.

Yep pretty stupid, they could have made a great movie instead they just plain phked it up.  If you can't get the planes right you got nothing.  Plus, like many said the sub plots look totally ghey.

It's too bad.
