Title: In memoriam of SABENA
Post by: deSelys on November 07, 2001, 02:36:00 PM
Our national 76-yrs old airline 'SABENA' declared bankruptcy today   :(. State financed, it was badly suffering from ill-management, and was on the verge of collapse since more than 20 years (2 years of economic profit during its whole life   :o ).
Dear OBL managed to give the last kick in this sand castle...

Still, it was a mourning day in Belgium. Sad to see such a respectable old lady (one of the safest in the world btw) pass like that...

Wasn't it owned by Swiss Air ?
I thought that was the reason for bancrupcy.

Our airlines LOT are also in hot water.
They are not managed by government, they sold it out not long ago  :(
Back in times when they were government they were prabably the only well functioning business....

Fd-ski: cc it was part-owned by Swissair but the belgian government was still one of the bigger (if not the biggest) shareholders. After the 11th september, Swissair refused a much awaited financial support to the Sabena, condemning it to death. But we can't honestly blame them as they are facing huge problems themselves...
A new company (DAT) should rise from the ashes indeed, but on a much smaller scale. I believe Virgin Express and Ryanair will take benefits from this as well. Life goes on...

Camo: how true! However, for the pilots, it was said to be Sex And Beer Every Night Around!

Jochen: how nice of you...Very sensible for the 7,000 people who lost their job (amongst them were 500 couples who lost all their income...) I hope you'll never live this situation, regardless on how fit you are yourself.

I've been suspended since sept13 since Ansett Australia stopped flying. Luckily for us we've resumed some flights and maybe saved.

Sad demise for 65yrs of aviation history.

Governments are usually hurting for cash too  :)
Company should self sustain or close. You can't expect a government to subsidize it indefinatelly.
It's sad, really is. Hopefully new airline will be about soon.
