Apparently in response to the upcoming release of Intel's Conroe, the AMD CPU prices have started to nosedive today. I just saw an AMD 4000+ San Diego core going for $130. Yesterday that same CPU was selling for $260 and a week ago it was over $300!
Rumor has it AMD will cease production of the non-FX series CPU's with the 1 MB level 2 cache so if you want one now might be the time to buy.

The only reason to cease production is because they have something better in the works. Why buy one now, when a month from now they might have something even better? :P

Well... not really.
The only reason is that it will cost more to produce than they'll be able to sell it for, apparently Conroe really is going to hit AMD that hard. With the E6600 outperforming the lower end FX series it seems crazy that anyone would be considering AMD in the near future.
I'm in the market for a new build PC. I'm waiting for Conroe, I think many others are doing the same. AMD will not have anything better for a good few months.

Upcoming Q4 this year.
"This morning, the home office of AMD demonstrated a 4x4 enthusiast system, affectionately referred to as the “Quad Father”, running a variety of different multi-threaded applications. Among the demonstrations given, Half Life 2 was run while playing MP3 audio and MPEG4 video running in the background.
AMD, in an attempt to appeal to the entire enthusiast market (not just the high-end enthusiast market) , promised dual CPU bundles for well below $1,000. AMD says they are targeting what they call the Mega-tasking enthusiast, those of us who use their machines for everything, all the time. Hopefully this little nugget of information will hold you over for now, we’ll have more details for you soon. "

They will be enabling the coherent link pin for CPU's other than the FX-62.
Probably in the rev g core.
Good thing is it will be fully upgradeable to dual quad core K8L's :) .
Still also think that the ATI buyout will produce a combined GPU/PPU for the second socket (doesn't have to be a CPU in it).

Despite the fact that Conroe will shortly be the performance king, these AMD price drops are GREAT news for folks like me (poor). Granted it would be swell to build a system around the Conroe CPU, but that would mean replacing all those components I have been scraping and saving for... two 1 gig sticks of RAM, 939 socket motherboard, and my X800GTO vid card (which I was able to unlock to 16 pipelines) - not gonna happen on my budget. Besides, even my little 3000+ "Winnie" runs AH like a champ so I'm hoping the 4000+ (which I ordered today :) ) will allow me to run AH for at least 4 or 5 more years - maybe longer?

If you ever wanted socket 939 dual core, getem now before they go away...
I'm considering swapping my 3700 for a 4200... $199 at newegg. Not sure though, still debating. I just hate watching that damned hourglass whenever one application or thread behaves poorly, and I hate having to leave my computer alone while burning DVDs because I might accidentally peg the cpu and burn a coaster.

Well -
The 1mb per core X2 4400, X2 4600 and X2 4800 will reappear with the coherent links enabled and be rebadged as low end FX CPU's for use in the 4x4 Torrenza boards.
