Title: Red Baron 3D question
Post by: Seagoon on July 26, 2006, 01:58:10 PM
Hi All,

I was unpacking boxes the other night and stumbled on some old software I'd never bothered to install. One was the game "Red Baron II" which (since I was disco'd from the internet) I installed and tried playing. The graphics were horrible and the game was buggy, but I found it enjoyable anyway. After I got connected I discovered there'd been about a million updates and patches to the game, so I downloaded some, including the "Hells Angels" superpatch.

Unfortunately the graphics are still mostly terrible, nothing like the Superpatch screenshots. I suspect this is because my NVIDIA GEforce MMX card limits me to "directdraw" and not "glide" on the video preferences page.

What exactly are "glide" graphics anyway and is there anyway to get it with an NVIDIA card?

Thanks!

- SEAGOON

PS: Sorry Skuzzy, I feel terrible playing another sim but you don't have the SE5a, Snipe, or a single Fokker in the planeset yet. ;)

Glide was the old proprietary 3dfx 3D interface.

So there is no way to emulate it I presume? Other than digging up an old Voodoo card and installing it that is...

I seem to recall a Direct3D patch for Red Baron 3D. IIRC, it was a third party thing.

Not to drag this offtopic, but if there was a way to make LongBow II work on a modern machine, I'd be all over it.

Openglide (https://sourceforge.net/projects/openglide)  will let you run 3DFX Glide stuff on newer hardware through OpenGL.

If you decide to try it out let us know how you get on Seagoon. I've got a copy of RB2 sitting around somewhere and might just dig it out.

I've got a copy of RB2 also. Does OpenGlide support LB2?

I don't know - maybe I'll try it at the weekend. :)

Some of the community-made mods look cool on the wiki page as well.

Thanks for the link, downloaded the DLL and pasted it into my Windows/System folder. I know that this is a silly question, but now what? How do I get it to run?

Hi Momus,

Thanks for the FAQ.

I started up the game and lo and behold both "Glide" and "1024x768" were now enabled in the video settings. Unfortunately, when I select them I get engine noise and a black screen.

I'm going to uninstall everything and start out by trying to get Open Glide to work with just the basic out of the box RB2 game and tweak the settings there.  If I can do that, I'll gradually add-in the patches I installed.

If I can get that going, we'll have to see if we can get some 8 player WW I madness going. Should be more fun than my prior game addiction.
