CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader issued a worldwide call Thursday for Muslims to rise up in a holy war against
Israel and join the fighting in Lebanon and Gaza until Islam reigns from "Spain to
Iraq."
In the message broadcast by Al-Jazeera television, Ayman al-Zawahri, second in command to
Osama bin Laden, said that al-Qaida now views "all the world as a battlefield open in front of us."
The Egyptian-born physician said that the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah and Palestinian militants would not be ended with "cease-fires or agreements."
"It is a jihad (holy war) for the sake of God and will last until (our) religion prevails ... from Spain to Iraq," al-Zawahri said. "We will attack everywhere." Spain was controlled by Arab Muslims for more than seven centuries until they were driven from power in 1492.
He said Arab regimes were accomplices to Israel. "My fellow Muslims, it is obvious that Arab and Islamic governments are not only impotent but also complicit ... and you are alone on the battlefield. Rely on God and fight your enemies ... make yourselves martyrs."
He also called for the "downtrodden" throughout the world, not just Muslims, to join the battle against "tyrannical Western civilization and its leader, America."
"Stand with Muslims in confronting this unprecedented oppression and tyranny. Stand with us as we stand with you against this injustice that was forbidden by God in his book (the Quran)," al-Zawahri said.
Kamal Habib, a former member of Egypt's Islamic Jihad militant group who was jailed from 1981 to 1991 along with al-Zawahri, said the al-Qaida No. 2's outreach to *****es and non-Muslims was unprecedented and reflected a major change in tactics.
"This is a transformation in the vision of al-Qaida and its struggle with the United States. It is now trying to unite Sunni Muslims, *****e Muslims and calling for non-Muslims to join the fight," he said.
Al-Zawahri wore a gray robe and white turban in the video. A picture of the burning World Trade Center was on the wall behind him along with photos of two other militants. One appeared to be a bearded Mohamed Atta, the Egyptian ringleader of the Sept. 11 attacks. The other was Mohammed Atef, also known as Abu Hafs al-Masri, a former top lieutenant of bin Laden who was killed in a U.S. airstrike in
Afghanistan in November 2001.
The Arab satellite station did not transmit the entire tape, using instead selected quotes interspersed with commentary from an anchor.
An Al-Jazeera official speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters said the full tape was about eight minutes long. The satellite channel aired only about half the message. It would not say how it received the tape.
"The shells and rockets ripping apart Muslim bodies in Gaza and Lebanon are not only Israeli (weapons), but are supplied by all the countries of the crusader coalition. Therefore, every participant in the crime will pay the price," al-Zawahri said.
"We cannot just watch these shells as they burn our brothers in Gaza and Lebanon and stand by idly, humiliated," he added.
The message was al-Zawahri's 10th this year. Bin Laden has issued five messages in a particularly active year of messages from the top al-Qaida leadership.
Al-Zawahri last appeared in a video posted on an Islamic Web site on the first anniversary of the train bombings in London. In the July 7 tape, he said two of the four suicide bombers in London had spent time in an al-Qaida training camp, preparing themselves for a suicide mission.
The two top al-Qaida leaders also paid tribute in June to the slain leader of their Iraq network, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, in separate recordings. Many of their messages this year have dealt with current events in Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia.
Another new audio or video message from bin Laden had also expected in the past week on the fighting in Gaza and Lebanon, according to IntelCenter, a U.S.-based independent group that provides counterterrorism information to the U.S. government and media. However, no messages have appeared on Islamic Web sites to announce the release.
Al-Zawahri said Muslims everywhere must rise up to attack "crusaders and Zionists" and support jihad "until American troops are chased from Afghanistan and Iraq, paralyzed and impotent ... having paid the price for aggression against Muslims and support for Israel."
Israel began an offensive on Gaza days after Palestinian militants captured an Israeli soldier on June 25. It opened a second front in Lebanon after Hezbollah guerillas killed eight Israeli soldiers and captured two others on July 12.

What stood out for me in this article was the 4th paragraph:

The key words for me are driven from power.
And that was more than 500 yrs ago! What a bunch of maroons!

ya...I found that interesting too. Same as Saddam...that he and al queda hated one another. I remember reading the OBL said his hatred for America was equal to his hatred of Saddam (because Saddam ran a secular muslim country)

So are most other Shi'ite organizations, terrorist or non-terrorists. Heck, al-Queda's former and now dead man in Iraq publically called for the extermination of the Shi'ites in Iraq and carried out and supported "neighborhood ethnic cleansing" of Shi'ites. But war makes for strange bed fellows. Iran has been reported to be used as a transit point for some al-Queda that escaped from Afghanistan because the western border with Iran is relatively quiet and doesn't garner to much U.S. attention.

what many seem to fail to understand is that if these people are forced into a corner they will set aside their internal squabbles and face the threat. it's best if they are left alone in that way they generally cancel each other out. arm both sides. tell one the other said this or that about his mother then watch the fireworks.

A bunch of BS. Spain's already caved in and is no threat to them. Of course that also means it's easy for them to operate there so blowing up a few spaniards will just help keep them in line.
On the other hand since they have also declared war on all the OTHER muslims and arab nations at the same time, it is a prime oportunity for said non radical muslims and arab nations to kick their butts out in the open and eliminate the radical threat. Will it happen? Not a chance.

Its just like with airlines.. the more you travel the better. You get some sort of bonus.
When you reach a sertain ammount of jihads you get your harem, tent with sattelite dish and infedel tv plus your standard oilwell and Mercedes.

umm ok. If you count courting the hizbo's and a growing anti semite environment as not caving, I guess you could see it that way. i'll see it as caving, the stark reality that it is. feel free to disagree. i'll cite examples, and you simply type "Spain didn't cave." You'd look even more clever if you typed "neener neener". Ya, that would really get me.

Actually I thought the "spain caved" comment was referring to the pulling out if Iraq and the change of government.
I guess Norway has caved too.. we allowed Hamas officials into norway to talk to our government and got plenty of ack from it.

Well, that certainly didn't give them an image of having much backbone, if only because of the timing (right after the train bombings and such).

Nah Nils... I was referring to their new position on things but I guess their withdrawl from Iraq could be seen as a small part of that. Some people in this thread seem to think I'm attacking Spain... I'm not really, I'm just alarmed at their recent shifts in position.
IMHO Spain has been a good ally for a long time... recent events are cause for concern...

They came after they won the democratic election. That point aside, Norway has always allowed everyone to come and make their point or have secret or less secret meetings between rival fractions in conflicts. We belive that to shut down the lines of communication between two parts is worse than allowing them a forum for discussion.
Because of this our officials have been allowed to be present and mediate in many conflicts around the globe were other nationalities have not been welcome. Its not often that this has had any real results but there have been a few, and if only one conflict can be calmed or sorted then its worth it.

The Spanish might think the same thing about the US, i.e. recent events are a cause for concern.
Perhaps you perceive a polarization developing between the two countries that's due to a more aggressive American foreign policy rather than a change in Spain's position.

Spain pulled out of Iraq due to a manifesto commitment made by thge PSOE before the Madrid bombing. Moreover, since we know that invading Iraq had nothing to do with Al Qaeda; how can a withdrawal be interpreted as caving to Al Qaeda? And even assuming for one second that you're right about Spain, what do you call the subsequent withdrawal of US forces from Saudia Arabia, the nerve centre of Radical Islam, if not a huge act of appeasement in its own right?
