Title: Bar tending.....
Post by: EagleEyes on July 28, 2006, 07:24:49 PM
Ok, so......

I graduated in 2005 and im still not in college.  I want to go to school to become a bar tender.  I volunteered for a local country festival called Winstock and i worked in the beer tent and had a blast.  Thats when i decided i wanted to go to school to be a bar tender.  But a friend of mine said i shouldnt go to school because bars and clubs like to train their own people.  Now i was woundering if anyone out here knows if its good to go to school or just get trianed by that specific club/bar.  Any help would be great!!

There was an informative thread on this a while ago.

Search for "bartending" in the title only in the O'Club; I'm sure it will pop up.

When I was 20~ish, I worked for a local "Ground Round" as a waiter.  They had a bartending opening and the manager offered me the position.  They had their own on-site training program that, in hindsight, was really spectacular.

Now being a bartender can be a lot of fun.  It can also be an elaborate form of babysitting.  Depending on your city/state, the laws may be in your favor or, as in my case, very much against you.  Meaning, if someone looks fine, has a drink, leaves and causes an accident....you, the manager and the restaurant can all be held liable.

Its amazing but since people will ditch any form of responsibility, the legal system has found a way to sue anyone and everyone who has deeper pockets than the offender (if he/she is still alive).

So while its fun mixing, serving and entertaining...I cant emphasize enough to know the local laws.  Being the "nice guy" who gives those "nice folks" one more round might be the same people trying to sue your brains out to save their butts from going to jail.

Not as easy to get into as you would think.  I was the one who posted the bartending thread a long time back.

Since then, I have been looking really hard for a bartending position anywhere.  I got a little bit of training behind a bar, but then got fired for working too hard.  Anyway, before that until just recently, I couldn't find anything.

Some bars only hire bartenders from within.  I.E. They'll only hire waiters who they think will fit well from their own restaurant.  So it's a gamble doing this, you could work there for 3 years without ever getting anything.

Some bars hire from outside, but do some of their own training.  But these jobs are highly sought after with the owners really looking at a good amount of experience needed.

Maybe it's just the town I'm in.  I'm in a huge college town, and while there are bars scattered across town, every single bartending position is filled all of the time.  I've even scanned across town, bars and restaurants that are a bit out.  I've even looked into neighboring towns to see if I can get a foot in the door behind a bar.

I have found jack ****.  Now, I am one of the nicest most confident guys you'll ever meet.  But after this past summer and all the **** that has again happened (last summer was awful too), I'm getting a little depressed about finding nothing.

I bar tended in college on 6th street in Austin. If anyone has been to 6th in Austin i have worked in some high value bars. Great money and for a college kid to get to hang with your friends and get drunk while working. We worked our way up and had contacts to get a job. Bar tending schools will get ya a job at some bar grill $100 a night making BS drinks all night long. Your a scrub bar back for a year busting your butt for 1/4 what the tenders made.

After all those years i found out it was fun but hard on your body. Drinking comes with the job its fun but gets old. Drunks are fun but after a couple of years it got on my nerves. Staying up at night getting off work at 4 am is hard. Some of my friends got sucked in and are downtown working this weekend at 30 years old. But the money is good and the women are better! Got some great stories....

Sorry to hear that, Laser.

I've had offers to work at some ritzy resorts on Cape Cod and the like...but its just not my thing.  A friend of mine is doing that and she makes killer money this time of year but its starving on the off season.  She's making awesome money, but like her, I need a steady income all year long.

I was a bartender and DJ in my 20's. Most fun job I've ever had. Good money and all the babes you want.  Big clubs are always looking for barbacks and you can work your way up, or you could start out at a small place and learn.
