Ok basic question. I downloaded the terrains from the list and ended up with them as the red ah sybol on y desktop. How to a change them to a res file so I can add the my main terr file for use or altering ?

Just double click on the icons to install the terrains for game play in AH.

On Res files (the existing, playable terrains). You can't edit them or alter them unless you have the source files to work with.

Ok I tried to double click them all that happened is a link opened to my htc terr folder and it copied them into there but.....they still showed as an exe file not res as the others are and didnt appear in the list of available maps off line or in the 8 player game.  I tried double clicking on them in there and they just start to load the game and return to the icon.So, I renamed the res files, the format changed and they come up i the list of available maps but if I choose one it boots me back to the choice screen.

Double click the exe file should install them in AH.
