Title: Landis Tests Positive For “Synthetic Testosterone

NEW YORK -- Tests show that some of the testosterone in Floyd Landis' system at the Tour de France was synthetic and not naturally produced by his body as he claimed, according to a newspaper report.

The French antidoping lab testing the American cyclist's samples determined that some of the hormone came from an external source, The New York Times reported on its Web site Monday night, citing a person at the International Cycling Union with knowledge of the result.

The finding undermines the defense that Landis has stood behind since he tested positive for an elevated ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone following the 17th stage of the Tour de France, where he staged a stirring comeback in the Alps to make up for a poor performance the day before.

Looking and sounding defiant, Landis said Friday that his body's natural metabolism _ not doping of any kind _ caused the result, and that he would undergo tests to prove it.

"We will explain to the world why this is not a doping case but a natural occurrence," Landis said at a news conference in Madrid, Spain.

But after determining that Landis's ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone was more than twice the limit of 4:1, the lab performed a carbon isotope ratio test on the first of Landis's two urine samples, the person told the Times.

That test determines whether the testosterone it is natural or synthetic.

Landis officially requested the testing of his backup urine sample Monday for an elevated testosterone ratio. If the "B" test is negative, Landis would be cleared. If it's positive, which Landis' lawyers say they expect, he could be stripped of his Tour victory and banned for two years.

The Times reported that Landis was in New York on Monday night and could not be reached for comment.

Not that I really care about this (cause I don't), but isn't it the same (French) lab that made the false accusations against Armstrong?

ditto

I posted this as a follow up to an earlier thread that said Landis had been accused

what are the chances that some french undercover type snuck some of this stuff into Landis system?  just something to think about.  The french are pretty low down and dirty when it comes to their bi-cycle race

They wouldn't need to sneak it into his "system". He surrendered the samples to a third party. The best thing since this is supposed to be a long term booster and not a rapid functioning one would be to take a very public blood test and urine sample and have it analyzed by at least 2 different labs. The sooner the better.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!!   France!!

Where a tourist may taste the finest cuisine served at exquisite sidewalk restaurants; marvel at the Gothic architecture of Notre Dame Cathedral;  stand in awe at the foot of the Matterhorn;  and thrill at the spectacle of American cyclists winning the Tour de France...

year...

after year...

after year...

after year...

And America is used to cheat and steal victory, if any. Shouldn't be anything new to them :p .

So easy to poke...

Between I can't see why you are chocked there. Sixpence is absolutly right, every cyclist is full of "dopage" so i can't see a reason to watch that farce year after year.

False.

Too bad for Landins, I liked of him. Glad he was caught though.

A 2 year long suspension for those caught is not enough imo, and the suspansion should be in effect for all races. Basso is i belive going to do the tour of spain later this year. He was not busted in the same way tho so maybe that explains it.

Not the only American sportsman to be caught taking drugs recently.

Drug analyst Gary Wadler says he is puzzled by the result of the test on Landis, who had never failed a drug test. One-time use of steroids could result in an abnormal test, but it would have no effect on performance and could not have accounted for Landis' feat in the 17th stage.

"Something's missing here," he says. "It just doesn't add up."

The question is "Who cares?"
I mean they are riding fricken bicycles. Bicycles mind you.
I did this when I was a kid and my drugs of choice were Kool Aid, baseball cards (only use I ever found for em) and clothespins.
Next thing you know they wil make sleeping a professional sport. Then will come the accusations of Lunesta doping. :)

Not to bring up the obvious, but the B test doesn't come back for another week - so wait and see till then. But I hope he didn't do it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Baseball, football, cycling, all the same. The dope in football too, but they don't test during the off season, so you get in your cycles in the off season. Everyone knew ballplayers were on steroids, you believed Bo Jackson was natural? There is too much money involved, so to keep up you have to do what the others are doing to enhance their performance. The sad fact is that if you don't cheat with the others, you get left behind.

I find it hard to believe that testosterone works THAT fast.  I was under the assumption that it would take at least a week to even start seeing the effects.  I guess these days, they have every drug for every purpose.

I dont find it hard to believe that it works fast.
think about how fast you'd feel wrong if they cut your balls off.
its like the opposite of that

The results of the B test are also positive.

Now the legal battles starts, and it can take a year before that is done.

Was it done by the same lab? Given the incident last year with Armstrong, I'd feel a lot more confident with a different lab and sample taken ASAP than the previous.
