And now im gonna pretend that i didnt see the new Starwars movies, and pretend that Serenity was the follow up to the original Starwars movies.
Serenity pretty much OWNED the new Starwars movies.
-
The series was pretty freakin' good, too.
-
They should give the series a second chance with all the BSG popularity. After all, the FX people are the same :)

I Loved both the movie and the series. I have both on DVD. Whose your favortie charactor? (Oh, and guess what, my name is Reynolds as in Malcom Reynolds!!! Thats where i got the idea)
-
Maniac, you should buy/rent/download the series if you enjoyed the movie.
I'm surprised that SciFi didn't get Whedon to continue the series on SciFi. Then again, maybe FOX is asking for an insane amount of money for the broadcasting rights.
-
best TV series ever... I didn't watch it on TV but I did buy the DVD of the series and of the movie.... great investment.

Yep.. way better than BSG...
Unforgiven

The series was great. I don't know why it failed other than just not enough people knew to watch it. Same for the movie. If it didn't do better on DVD than it did at the box office it's unlikely there will be a sequel.
-
The series failed because Fox screwed the pooch on delivering it and showed the episodes all out of order. I dont think they ever did air all of them. Sci-Fi picked it up but I believe there is some clause preventing anyone from making new episodes. Thats why they made the movie instead. I keep hoping for a sequel to the movie.
-
I paid absolutely no attention to the series until after I saw the movie. I just wasn't interested in Josh Whedon. I expected some sort of sci-fi version of Buffy or Angel.
Firefly has its bright spots and I think it could have grown into a very good series, but all in all I like the movie more. The movie had almost none of the western feel that Whedon tried to inject into the series. Chiwetel Ejiofor would have been an excellent addition. He played one of the more interesting villians that I've seen in a movie in a long time.

It definitely appeared that Fox wanted to kill it but I don't think showing the episodes out of order is what did kill it. Do you know of anyone that stopped watching it because of that? I think the space western theme just didn't appeal to many and the lack of publicity/advertising did it in.

FOX kept moving the time slot around (at least here they did). I had a really difficult time trying to find out when the show would be aired. I ended up missing many of the episodes and finally gave up.
When Sci-Fi picked it up, they locked it in on Friday at 6pm CST and ran them in order.
That was a great series. Pretty creative. The cast was a hoot as well.
Maniac, the series gives you a bit more depth of what, why, and how they ended up where they did. Definately something to watch.

sounds like something id like to see..
thx maniac, ill look it up when i get home

Yep, loved the series and the movie. There's no doubt that Fox decided from the get-go that the series should die, IMHO. In fact, until I saw the first movie trailer, I'd never even heard of Firefly. It was like dicovering a band whose music movies you to tears, only to find out they broke up (or the lead singer died or something) before you'd heard of them.
-
Definately check out the show if you liked the movie. The show is a lot lighter and funnier. I thought the movie was a bit too dark, but they were trying to cram a lot into 2 hrs.
-
They also had to do some quick character development for those who never saw the series. I think that contributed to the overall darker feeling and mood. No time to just be funny.
Seems it was a good choice though. The movie did gangbusters at the box office.
-
Just saw Episode one, the train heist, pretty ok, damn short tough , going to watch Episode two now :)
-
The Train Job is episode 1 in the order that Fox aired them, but not in the order they were meant to be shown. Watch the pilot (serenity pt 1 and serenity pt 2) to give all the backstory, plot development, and character development. That was originally supposed to be the premier, but Fox thought it was too slow moving and made them write a more action oriented episode... Train Job was the result.
-
Maniac, here is the intended episode order list if you would like to view it in the "correct" order. Wikipedia entry bookmarked to the episode list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_%28TV_series%29#Episodes)
Skuzzy, I dunno what your definition of gangbusters is, but at the box office, they did not break even according to the IMDB. The IMDB does not have DVD sales figures though, so I'm not sure if DVD sales of Serenity (not including the series DVDs) brought the income to over the estimated 40 million dollar budget. I admit I did not check to see what the movie cost to make, but it did really well in the opening weekend. I suppose I should have clarified it. Seems to be in good company for many big budget movies though.

I don't think they even broke even at the box office Skuzzy. I'll look it up.
I've read it cost $39M to make but took only $25M at the box office.

Unless DVD sales really soar like they did for the series it's propbably over.
-
They didn't, and I did not check to see if they did. I just recall the opening weekend doing pretty well. Just goes to show ya.

It did well opening weekend, $10M I've read. Fizzled out pretty quick, damn shame.

Awesome. Universal HD kicks butt. BSG in HD, and now Firefly in HD.
Serenity almost broke even if you count the international numbers. Shame, it was a really good movie.

If they do another movie (which I highly doubt) it would have to be a prequil. They killed off too many main characters.
Trivia sidenote: I was watching Saving Private Ryan the other night and all of the sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks. The "wrong" Pvt. Ryan they found was Nathan Fillian!

http://www.session416.com/ A little thing that Whedon made meant to be before the movie takes place. It's very cool.
