Just say no! Ok the first time was good. You feel that high, not only is it just like flying. It is flying! So you want some more. You think you know your limits. You can give it up anytime. That's what you tell yourself.  Soon you want to do it all the time.

Pretty soon straight and level doesn't satisfy you anymore. You want to get higher still. So you spend longer and longer up there. When you come back down all you can think of is how and when you get your next fix.  You find yourself hanging out in hangars talking about it to other users and instructors who want push you into getting ever higher and higher ratings.  You go back to sims but you find that doesn't satisfy you anymore. There is no buzz, no danger.

You're on a slippery slope my friend. I know all too well. :D  Because I am an aerosexual.

WTG.
Not only is teh flying kewl, but those new 172Ss are a real blast.
The earler 172 you were parked next to is probably 15 - 20 kts slower, unless it is an RG.
You'll be able to impress the pants right off of Laverne & Shirley

Hooked another one!  Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My flight instructor:

When you start life is peaceful and purdy:

You're then invited to go do battle with a squaddie right when you think you know something.  You will get your butt kicked handily.

Then it grows a second engine and everything doubles:

Then you get into a jet (and think to yourself "ooh no!"):

And then you wonder why the heck it feels so darn small:

But you get to see some cool things with RVSM and 1000' spacing at altitude.  A Southwest 737 whizzing past 1000' above us on the way home the other day.

I'll put my 1975 172M 180 conversion (Penn Yan Super Hawk) up against any new 172 for speed. I flight plan and usually see at least 125Kts. TAS. No doubt the new cessna's have better fit and finish but it comes at a weight penalty. With full fuel, I can carry 4 adults and about 25#s for 4 hours with reserve. Don't think the new Hawks can do that. No doubt the RG is another lvl. of performance, will carry a good load at 135Kts.

New Skyhawk owners HATE it when you suggest that their quarter million dollar plane flys roughly the same as a forty year old one that sells for an eighth the amount.

Not just the same, but many cases...

...

better :D

I wouldn't mind having a fastback 150 with manual flaps.  Cram 180 horses under the cowling and have a plane that sure knows how to climb.

It would be parked next to my Pitts.

Which would be tucked up to the Aztec F.

Adjacent to the Stearman.

Near the Javelin.

Okay that's enough I need a few minutes alone in the mens room.

Well, but if they mount the new G1000, it's a whole different beast. The club recently purchased 6 (2 x 172S, 4 x 172R) and while the performances are similar, the comfort and fuel use factor is way better in the new ones.

More roomy, better noise insulation, and the G1000, well, it's a dream for long trips.

That conventional panel has all the capabilites of the G1000, except the onboard W/X map & satellite radio.
As for if the new $172k Cessna (thats the base price, not $million/4) is worth the price, that is up to the consumer & plenty seem to think they are.
Maybe its that new plane smell?
I'd guess you'd spend about that buying a used one & upgrading it to an equal quality of plane.
I've flown two Penn-Yaned 180HP 172s & neither had the cruise performance of the SPs I've driven (of course one was tricked out with a bunch of STOL equiptment & the other had a very rough paint job).
The last SP I flew did over 130 TAS at 2400RPM, 6500' about 10C over standard temp for about 8gal/hr, 50 rich of peak.
IMO 180HP is 180HP & whoever has the slicker airframe is faster (or the Skyhawk XP guy who comes along & pwns u)
