I just got a trackir the other day and this thing is making me queezy, the motion is sickening but i'm getting the idea it will be really cool once i tune it. The question is how the hell do you use the thing? I try to use it in pan view but it seems to only use the snap views and when i look around it snaps to these odd views that i don't want. Another thing, does anyone have any profiles, and ideas on how you set yours. I really don't know how to set it, i read the instructions but i need some plain simple honest advice on what's best to set it to. I'm getting shot down in the MA while i screw around with this thing and i don't know what the hell's happening lol, so if you see Ledpig flopping his trackir's probably screwed up, or he got shot cause his trackir's screwing him up. Take advantage now:D :p

Best advice I ever got on TrackIR was from Silat;
"Don't buy it."
-
lol
I got it myself with vector. Basically do something like this.
1. Install the software.
2. Put on the hat.
3. Run the Program
4. Go into tracking and play with how sensitive you want it, and such.
5. Play the game make sure the green light is on that means its tracking the hat, to toggle to hat on and off press F9.
6. Take a week to get used to it

Shameless ripoff of speed55 incoming...
Deadbands are really important.
When you set them up right the thing is fantastic.
Use the edit profile option, with the head/gages/tracking boxes checked, and mess with the deadband settings.
I set mine like this:
Tacking type = Vector

Yaw
0- 0
2- 4

Good luck - 6 views = look left/lean right or look right/ lean left

This is a good baseline to start with.

Be sure to check your framerates. TIR could easily cause some motion sickness if your framerates arnt smooth (30+ minimum 99% or the time...60 is better). You may need to dial back your details to get a smooth FR, because its more crutial with TIR
-
I am noticing a reduction in Framerates with trackir, is this the Trackir, does it suck alot of Cpu juice??
-
Makes my cpu usage jump from normal 0-2% to 4-5% and mem usage is 15,052 k. This was checked with task manager. I don't think this is much of a hit. I could be wrong though.
What is your rigs CPU and how much memory.

quit whining.
TIR vector is key.. However.. you WILL start over flying and shooting again. I cannot state it better than before TIR you are flying FROM a set view, after TIR you will learn to fly INTO a view.
Happy to share my profile..
Also.. set a recenter button on your JS, lean forward and down recenter, and then go back to your natural sitting posiiton...this will give you optimal 6 views an the highest seat setting...and when you ready to fire.. lean forward and down..
Also... set a forward view button on you JS... click and hold this down during firing.. it will lock your forward view into only the x and y axis and not allow yaw to affect your shot.

The TIR doest take too much CPU, however because you are contantly looking around, your framerates overall will be slightly lower.

I disagree that "Vector" is the key. I'm still using TrackIR 3 without the vector add-on, and I just love it.
I wouldn't fly without it.

Did you ever try vector? Itīs like night and day. Just looking around all those fat cockpit frames bars, leaning left/right to get a better view on the ground. Getting a look at that "hidden" cannon round indicator in 109īs... Its really a big improvement.
(The only reason i dont fly Il2 anymore is the missing vector support)

Also Leadpig you should make sure you have positioned the little IR transmitter-receiver on an approximate level with your head, and a good distance from where you sit. Mine is a few inches beyond arm's length away. If you sit much lower or higher than the level it is positioned the view will jerk because it won't read the reflectors on your cap properly.
I also had a strange problem a few times. At first I used a regular baseball cap to attach the reflectors and things worked fine. Then went to an open-topped bill and on occasion it seemed my hair (blond) was interferring and reflecting enough IR to confuse Track IR causing view problems. But once I tucked my hair below the level of the sweatband of the bill things worked fine again.
You should also try the TrackIR Object Relative Move option both selected and deselected to see which way you prefer. I have it selected. Some prefer it deselected. It changes the way your head-turning and leaning is presented on screen. On the clipboard choose: Options, Preferences, View Options, then check or uncheck TrackIR Object Relative Move.
I don't see much of a hit on the CPU with Track IR.
I also concur with Balsy to set a "recenter" button on your Joy Stick. I recenter several times per flight, especially just before engaging or shooting or releasing ord.
I suggest practicing offline too to get used to it.
Best Regards,
Cement

Guy's thank you so much your little tip's are just the type i need, and are not all found in the instructions:aok

click on "profiles" i believe there is now an aces high profile.click on that and save it in the box below. then click edit . click on guages..disable the one that allows tilt of head motion..not leaning but tilt of head ...do follow balsys advice on centering ...a must to be added to js...also try f7 it is prcision and slows it down a bit...if you see me pull me aside and well go to some quiet base and have a few cocktails and i'll be able to tell you more in game than on bbs.

Ok I know this is gonna sound dumb, but I'm a newb so I figure I might as well ask....What is Trackir?
-
Not dumb just uninformed.

What the? Do you where that? No wonder I'm no good at this, all I have is a joystick and too much time on my hands....I can't compete with that kind of technical wizardry!

Donīt worry. While TIR is a big improvement, you donīt NEED that to be a good pilot. Actually, only a very small percentage of AH flyers do own a TIR. Most people use good olī Hat View, and the mousewielders not even that :)
The only equipment really neccessary to get "good" is a stick, anything else is luxury.

Theres hope for me yet!
TIR wont make you a better pilot, but it can give you an advantage in some fights...that is of course after the learning (pronounced 1-50 kill to death ratio) curve. Its a lot like golf...good equipement helps, but nothing can make up for practice and skill.

I just bought IRtrack4 w/vector should be here tomorow. im saving this thread.

Guys, I just installed the software, put the little clip on my hat, started the game and hit f-12 to center the picture and I haven't looked back since.... Except to see the bad guys that is. The first time I was attacked from behind and was able to eventually reverse the situation and shoot down the other guy was really something, never lost sight of my enemy wherever he was, just kept him in the picture and manuvered around till the gunsight was between my eyes and his plane. My only advice is that when you hit f-12 do it with your head slightly looking downward, not too much but just a little. Then you overhead view will be seamless from the top of the dash to behind the seat.
-
nturbiz...map center F12 to your joystick...youll be amazed...click on hotkeys and click change..then click the button you want and make sure you erase whatever function that button had before.

Hmm, so you have to wear a hat? Is the hat tetherd so you don't forget and wear it around when done playing? I am not so sure about this hat deal. Will it fit over a leather flying cap?

Check out my signature, download my film. It was shot using TrackIR Pro 4.
TIR is great. It's a more realistic viewing system, although sometimes it can give a you disadvantage. If you are looking to your rear right, you have to spin your head completely around to the left to look rear left. I've lost my direct 6 view in my typhoon, so now, I just look to my 5 or 7 o'clock and then use rudder to slide my tail side to side to check my direct 6.
When in a ground vehicle, TIR should be disabled with a hotkey, temporarily, when using the MAIN gun.
Seems like more and more are buying the Track IR.

They have films of their product on their website, for those curious about what it looks like and how to use it.
Edited for grammer. :)

Be sure to check out Kermit's "Carrier Sortie" as it demos TIR beautifully. It's also a great movie in general.
Didn't see your post there Kermit until after I posted this one. :)
