Title: Black Hurri
Post by: macleod01 on August 07, 2006, 10:35:02 AM
I was reading through the forum the other day when I found a request for a black Hurricane. This gave me an idea and although not at 2c, I made a black Hurri 1. Would appreciate your input on it. It is only my second skin so apologizes in advance if it is terrible. Some screenies.

i guess you used  someting like ms paint?

you need to try  using photo shop or paintshop pro or  gimp  that way  you can do things in layers and any mistake can easily be changed.

If you havent used  ta program like this  i would advise u too,i know you can get gimp for free  and i know psp9 has something like  a 60 day sample use.

I dont like to be negitive  but from the screen shots  it doesnt look so good the letters  are not loking right or the roundels  and  cant see any panel lines.

what  did u use to make this?

Actually i used Photoshop 5. Its only my second skin so im not surprised to hear that its bad. Things can be easily altered so i'll go back and try the roundels again. The letters were done by hand and not copied so thats why they look wonky and a bit , well, Terrible. Anything else? Panel lines- since its black im not sure how to make the panel lines stand out. Id appreciate help with this

ok    the lettering you should be able to do in photoshop  there should be a tool that does letters  there is  a good site  that kev had  a link to for all the fonts and you can download markings  and roundels.
i think its  simmers  shop or something http://www.simmerspaintshop.com

something like that.
the panel lines you can get  a profile from ahskins then copy it  put it on your skin as a different layer and lighten it,then u can use opacity  to make it less viable till it looks right

Keep in mind you are skinning a Hurri I with a historical Hurri IIc paint scheme.

BE500 LK-A is a very well known bird.

If you want to take it further and be accurate, here's a well known Black Hurricane I from the same squadron flown by Ian Gleed, the CO of 87 Squadron.

BE500 was also the Squadron Leader's bird for 87 squadron.  The insignia in front of the cockpit is the Squadron Leader's pendant.  Go to that site

http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/colours/markings.html

Grab the RAF insignia.  That's a photoshop file so you can use the S/L pendant from it and size it to fit.

Also keep in mind that on the left side of BE500 the LK-A would have had the LK in front of the roundel not in back like it did on that early Mark I Hurri.  So you would read it LK-A on both sides instead of A-LK on the left side.

IF you have fonts, they need to go in your computers font file.  Then when you open Photoshop and choose a font, they will be listed.  There are a number of RAF fonts available.

http://hans.presto.tripod.com/fonts/stencil5.html

The band on the tail of your Hurri I is the same as the Squadron Leaders Pendant so the colors would be the same as in the photoshop file of RAF markings I posted earlier

1. download the font to desktop
2. extract font to desktop
3. open My Computer
4. access c:/windows/fonts
5. copy said font from step 2.
6 paste into location in step 4.
7. access MS Word and look in fonts for RAF PW ATH
8.delete all items pertaining to the font on your desktop

Before you submit it make sure you post new pictures of it from different angles on here.  Let the skinners have a look at it and see if they don't have any thoughts.  And, of course, give Schatzi something to drool over in the meanwhile :D

Well I am amazed that I estimated such a large time scale, I have completed it. Or at least completed it before giving it up to the skinners to rip me to shreads. So go on get the knives out and disect it.

your pictures are too far away. try zooming in (Z) before you use the brackets to bring the camera closer. like this picture
(http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j193/toadkill_photos/ahss28-1.jpg)

also. your fuselage roundels are way to big, as is the coding.

Post by: macleod01 on August 14, 2006, 12:40:57 PM
The coding and the roundels are larger than usual in the photo guppy provided. Maybe its just my interpretation. I'll fix it right away Is yours the same version as im trying to do?

hmmmmmm *drooooooooool*

I just compared the side view to Guppys pic. This is what i noticed

- tail marking: the white and blue stripe look too wide. that cuts off the upper forward corner of the white stripe

- roundel looks a tiny bit too small now, the letters good. (roundel is a tad bigger then those)

I wish i had your patience. Id go stirr crazy skinning a plane i think! >>S<<

I feel bad being so picky, but you asked..... so, here goes:

This is what i meant with the tail markings: (i overlayed the image from Guppy)

those vertical Red, White and Blue stripes. The red needs to be larger, the white and blue thinner. as you can see, the upper frontal (left) of the white stripe just touches the edge of the stab. In your skin the corner is cut off.

Also, i think the roundel could be a larger still (lower edge of letters and roundel arent on the same height, roundel goes "under the belly" a bit) - moving the L and K a bit tailwards.

Just a question on the resolution....

I assumed that your ingame res made the image blurry, but now i noticed that the line between red and white at the tail is sharp, but the white/blue edge is blurry, same for the horizontal stripes.

Also, the roundel on the wing... the blue looks spottet with black. is that pixelated dark blue or intentional?

You've got dithering on the black and the blue roundels. You might try using bright or using the "best" option for dithering. I think some of the shapes need to be "crisper" -- try setting to 1024 resolution and test offline to see if they are.

i think mac, before you get your hoped up, it may not be accepted. in my opinion, it needs to be less 'black', so that you can actually see the colour and the details, and it needs to be more textured, it shouldn't all be a block colour. another thing to work on is improving the panel lines and rivets.

all this is coming from me though, i tried my hand at skinning and failed badly the first time, and gave up the second time round, so don't take my words too seriously :)
