Quick overview of graphics and characters.

This is the size of  colon right-parenthesis

Bytes: xxxx   1x char and 1x attribute byte per character. 2 chars = 4 bytes.

This is the size of :)

Bytes:  xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxx  .gif image, 170 bytes ( give or take.. depending on the graphic loaded ) Animated gif?  multiply x 3

Number crunching nightmare:  :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry

This is assuming AH uses something akin to ansi characters.. and also assuming I remember my old dos programming from 20 years ago.

Long live turbo pascal 2.0!!!!!

And its this reason I want to download my own skins versus have the server toss em to me while gaming.

Well, Le Paul, I doubt the whole graphic would be sent down the path. I would imagine there would be a character capture mechanism in place to translate the "colon lol"  to a laughing graphic. Sorta like recognizing the period as a precursor to a command.  I would think it's probably a performance hit on the FE to convert it... even if you could combine the graphic with the text box ( rememember, I'm assuming there's ansi character mode or similar in place ).

I understand your desire, though.  Not sure the what the steps are to build self-extracting skin files, but with the apparant proliferation of skins, they'd be updating it pretty frequently, I'd imagine.

Why?  Am I wrong?

BTW.. Back in it's day, Turbo Pascal ( full blown compiler for < $50 ) was THE thing to be involved in.  Fast and easy to use.  Sure, there were concerns about the size of the executable when it was all done, but until you got into the hefty programs, it didn't take long at all to convert your code into something that would run.

There is no reason to send the image over the net.  Just the 2 bytes for the two characters.  It will be the front ends job to translate that to an image.

So,
are you wrong? technicaly not.  You would be right if you actually coaded it that way.
Getting fired and your job sent to India, yes :D
