Title: Marlon Brando
Post by: Sandman on August 07, 2006, 10:14:11 PM
Okay... a little help please.

I happened to see this story (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2300516,00.html) over at Digg and I have to admit that I'm at a complete loss as to what made Marlon Brando such a great actor.

I've always thought he was overrated at best.

One of the first great "method" actors.

Godfather...'nuff said.

Yes, he made some stinkers, too.  But what great actor hasn't?

I wasn't all that impressed with the Godfather either.

His early work was great, he was ahead of his time for the 1950's- 60's. I think Brando's best performance was in "The Freshman" where he played a characature of himself in "The Godfather". That was some funny ****!

iirc The Young Lions was kick ass, but that was a long time ago
The Four Horsemen was also great, but Brando wasn't in that

I don't know about Brando's acting, but...

Apocalypse Now was pretty darn good.  :)

My only hope is that you will be forgiven for this blasphemy someday.

I think it was the butter scene in Last Tango in Paris :)

I think method acting was a bit overrated myself :)

Brando had some great roles, and did a great job in many, as did Newman and Dean. But there were often scenes where they all seemed to be pushing it a bit -- the emotion, the angst, the noir... Again, a distraction from what were often brilliant roles and performances.

They tended to grow out of it, IMO, and performed better in later life.

BTW, Steve McQueen kicked all of their tulips and Chuck Norris too :)

I would respectfully disagree

Cept for the Godafather I didnt think he was all that either till I really started to watch him.

Little Nuances he added to his parts, most people dont notice, and alot of the big time movie stars still dont do, Be it a simple scratch of the nose, Or just certain little gestures.
He was ahead of his time in alot of ways.

Burt Renolds put it best when he said
"the trick to acting is not getting caught at it"

too bad Reynolds never quite mastered that trick LOL

Brando did

BTW Last Tango in Paris sucked IMO

Hi Sandy,

I have to admit that I used to hate Brando's acting as well. I found that the cause for that was that I kept rating him according to his ability to take on another persona, i.e. to become the character he was playing.

The problem is, Brando is always Brando no matter who he is playing. So in order to appreciate his movies, you have to learn to appreciate him. So for instance, I've grown to really appreciate Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" with the new character "Marlon Brando" instead of the old version with the Marc Anthony Character. In the same way I prefer "A Streetcar Named Desire" with Marlon Brando instead of that Stanley Kowalski chump.

McQueen was the undisputed master of this.

Brando was notorious for forgetting his lines. During the Apocolypse Now shoot, he even wrote some of his lines on various props that were angled away from the camera.

If that talent, along with his magical metamorphasis from Diesel Brando to Fleshy Beach-ball Brando isn't a claim to greatness, I don't know what is.
