Post by: Dingy on January 04, 2000, 04:53:00 PM
Saw this post on another board and thought it would make an interesting topic  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

What are your most memorable 1 on 1 fights in Aces High?  Was there ever a fight that had you on the edge of the seat sweating bullets the whole time?  Who was the pilot and how did you do?  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Here are a couple of mine. Last nights I found out that the rook pilot in the Nik chasing me was Hollywood who changed to Riks for the Nite.  As I was pulling away, I started talking smack to him and told him not to break off "or else".  Just then he breaks off and I pull a beautiful high chandelle off to engage.  I had all kinds of E and so I went high after rolling in the merge to avoid the headon.  The Hollywood broke hard to reengage and didnt quite have the same energy I did.  As I loop over after the merge I follow his break with a roll to the left and beat Hollywood to the corner.  There he is a nice big target and I had an easy snapshot.  I pull the trigger only to see little spuds come shooting out as 4 of my 6 50cals were spent.  Hit marks light up Hollywoods plane and I am now out of buwetts.  Holly regains his composure and keels me when I try to extend at the last minute.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  Hollywood then says, "Dont try to break off or else!"  DOH!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Well tonite had a fun one.
I was flyin from 21 to 8 about 20k or so in my F4U when I look over my shoulder I see a rook F4U behind me about 5.8 and at least 3k alt advantage.  I think oh boy he comes down and I am dead.  I pour the coal on and trim level.  He stays about the same dist. out.  Moments later I see on comms SCDuck6 hollarin at me to turn and fight.  I replied no way with the alt disadvantage.  Then I notice I did gain some more seperation.  Also noted that fuel was getting LOW!  I grabbed 2k and turned almost co-alt and about d7.  I pushed nose down to get some E and at d3 pulled up at him. First merge went well as he came down we passed guns cold.  I pulled over the top at stall speed as he turned back at me at d1.2.  Second merge isn't as pretty for me and he soon has advantage.  Then it happens, the engine sputters to a stop.  Fuel had final run out.  I dove for terra firma and dropped gear.  Praying for a honourable opponant I screamed "BINGO FUEL!!!!".  SCDuck6 made one pass over me guns hot then the msg hit him.  He screamed sorry and wagged his wings at me.  I ditched with only a couple of scratches and looking at a life as a POW.

S! SCDuck6
Was a great fight and lookin forward to it again with more fuel  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Long time ago back at Beta 1, ran into a lone spit.  Ended up merging low in a twisting turning football screw that Spits are known for.  Got and received a few strike but noone had an advantage.  Was behind once, but couldn't stay there.  Now low and slow.  Almost bingo ammo, when two green P-51s over and lend a hand (which I needed).  I escaped and on my way to land, when a message came over to ask who the Spit was in the 5 minute 1v1.  The message came from Vermillion!

What a tense dogfight!  I was kinda proud of myself due to Verm is a pretty good pilot.

Close to landing my hands started to shake!  Who said it's just a Sim?    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Before he started flying for the Knights most of the time, Cobra and I ran into each other on many occations.  Could be 8-10 planes in the air, but somehow we always matched up against each other.  Very intense close-in dogfighting!!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

CC to that Swager, very intense dogfights indeed!

Also, when flying against Rooks, JagdNine is always a good fight.

And when flying against Bishops, a fellow squadmate of mine, Cleaner, is a good tangle as well as Moss.

And of course, Camel is a very tough nut to crack.

I have many fights I remember but only three truly stand out and say "boo!".

The first one was the first time I met Leonid. I was fighting as a Knight and he was defending F24. I had been flying the La-5FN for most of my time in AH but was mostly a turner and dogfighter style of pilot. I could push the La-5 to it's max at low speed and manuever for kills. My first fight against Leonid convinced my I wanted to be part of the 129 VVS, he moved in a smooth transition style that conserved E and finished me off with a rollover vertical dive he pulled onto my six with and killed me. I still use that dive to this day. I had never seen the plane flown that way and was awestruck by how deadly and quick it was. <grin leo>

My second fight I remember was when I was still flying for Knights as well. I was in a F4U flying a high cover for Dallas, my wingman. He dived into a big messy furball in his P51 and came out with a 109 on his tail. He made a mistake and turned a bit and lost his E advantage. I dived down and cleared his tail, I was travelling 475 IAS and moved from 14k to 3k and didn't fire until the 109 was at d375. Then I let loose and blew him away as I screamed past. Neither he or dallas saw me coming, one second I was there the next I was not. I have never had such a satisfying kill as clearing that fighter for him.

The last one I remember the clearest was a fight against Hristo in a 109 with my La-5. We met co-alt in a furball at 10k and spent almost 4 minutes in massive rollercoaster loops and dives with him moving away then me closing the gap on his 6. I have never flown the La-5 so close to the edge of it's performance pocket. It ended with Hristo slowing just enough on a vertical climb and I was able to lead him and fire ahead of his plane. He climbed ever so slowly right into the 20mm shells and blew apart. But I swear I have never flown so well as I did that fight. Everything just clicked. Ever since I have loved no fight more than a vertical battle in the La-5 against the 109 or 190 (190 isn't as fun they usually lose).

I had SCDuck nail me good the other day.  I'm so rusty the flakes are just peeling off of me, so that's my excuse. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)  I was flying a P-51 and came across him in a P-51 and another George below me.  I sat on top of them and made a good pass at the George lighting him up pretty well.  Unfortunately, he didn't blow and survived my pass only leaking fuel.  I stayed on top of him but couldn't commit because of Duck was grabbing alt.  Finally the George made a break for the base and I let him go.  At this time Duck had gained the E advantage without me being cognizant of that.  We went at it and he went into a zoom.  I thought I'd have an easy kill and held my fire while I zoomed up at him.  This is where the rust showed, I totally ran out of airspeed without realizing it and he flipped right down on me as I was floundering.  Totally took me apart and then blew me up.  "Nice rope a dope SCDuck" is all I had to say. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)  I don't recall ever being in the receiving end of one like that before.  Well done!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Good stories so far!  This was what I was looking for!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Had one yesterday against a co-alt C.205 piloted by Aper.  Aper and his rook cronies were defending field 8 and I decided to try my hand at a spit.  Aper had just finished downing 3 planes (my wingmang included) so I was feeling a little frisky.  Hes a tad high off my 12 and I had just gained LOADS of speed off a dive on a Nik which was finished off by another countryman.  I thought I might be able to catch Aper by surprise by pulling up into him with a verticle lead turn.  I situate myself firmly on his six and try to line him up.  As soon as Im in position, he rolls over with a bit of rudder and evades my shot.  We begin a twisting and rolling fite (rolling scissors) and I can never quite get a shot off on him.  He rolls over into a split S and I decide to pull up into an Immelman since we were so fast.  Once over the top, I roll back into him and get the message:

Aper #4 shoots down Dingy

DOH!!

I stared at the monitor thinking, "How the hell did he do that???"

I watched the film about 10 times after that to see what I could have done differently yet I am still shaking my head wondering where that piece of magic came from.

You made a big error. Macchi is a looper, never ever get into a looping fight with one, he can go from his split S into a tight loop and caught you on your immelman. Macchi is like a Nik2, don't dogfight the damn thing disengage and come back at alt with E. (PS it's quite slow too but accelerates moderatly well)

Ode to a very fine player named "Nash".

Every time in the Past,
It was only my Ash,
But this time of Last
I had lots of Smash,

So in a Flash,
I came to Bash,
A flamimg Splash,
An awesome Crash,

Good day to You, Mighty Nash!

Thanks for the fun,
With no worthy to gun,
There can be none,

Nash is a great one,
And did not run,
But, when it was done,

The Lowly Minotaur had won!

Sweetness filled the air around my head.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Aper in his 109, by far. Considering most 109s I see in the air newbies who mischosen their ride, I bounced his 109 full of overconfidence. A little scissoring and I was ahead…bang, shot down. Mad as I was, I took off nearby field and found him again. 2 minutes and dead again. Now I was worried bad     (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Every time I was near knights (aper flew for knights at that time), I searched his name in the roster. Then I found him in the air. We both were high, at 25 k or so. I could say I won E merges and parked behind him after few of them. He dove and I taunted him on open channel for running from the fight. Well, he was not running, just pulling me down where slow speed maneuvering is easier. Again, he risked very much in slow speed rudder assisted scissor moves, but this time it took him more that 3 minutes to make me overshoot. Dead again. I was furious. To actually being kicked over and over by the same guy in my favourite plane, grrr. So, I decided to fly low near enemy fields and practice the moves I saw him doing.

Well, on one flight it was Aper himself who bounced me. I did not know it then and I started doing his own moves. It worked, we had neutral situation from what was purely defensive situation for me in the beginning. Things were going by the, hmm.... plan. However, the fight became longish and attracted enemy 190 who started BnZing the duel. Evadine the 190, I was kicked out of the phase in scissors. I had to revert to reversals and front quarter passes. However, it was far from jousting, we just took every shot we could get. First HO was won by aper, but due to stalling conditions of both participants he only put few MG rounds into my plane. On second HO I managed to put sustained burst, coming down on his plane which seemed a tad too slow to put nose on me. His engine was out, and I had and easy job. The 190 was buzzin’ the fight all the time, so I was lucky I was not hit. It took twenty seconds to shoot the 190 down once Aper was neutralized.

The greatest fight and feel of accomplishment. Thanks, Aper, glad you joined rooks.

P.S.

Sorrow, you sure that was me ? I just can’t remember our duel, maybe it was someone who just looks like me     (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Just studied kill stats, Hristo vs Sorrow, 0 kills 0 deaths all 3 tours. Also, Tour 1 Hristo vs La 5FN = 12 vs 2, Tour 2 = 8 vs 0, Tour 3 = 5 vs 0.
But I’d gladly take the challenge, maybe just my poor memory.

I am pretty darn sure, I was excited when I saw your name. I believe this was in Beta 2 though when we were missing some kill stats. It was a small furball over F21 IIRC and you and I went through rollercoasters for close to 3 4 minutes before it ended.
