Ya know, you can rag on MS all you want but they make a pretty decent sim. Looking forward to the eye-candy :)

Looking forward to the $50 game, and the stutters of playing the latest and greatest.

Maybe they'll put in some decent terrain this time instead of blurry ground objects that don't even look real.

(Yes i've been waiting for it....for a while)

Well, they certainly make PRETTY sims.

$50 game on a brand new OS and three to four times the amount of system you currently have to run it decently.

Exactamundo,  I can still fly at 1FPS, it's just like a bunch of snapshots and plenty of time to admire the purty ground.

P.S. does it look like they transferred planes from FS2004 to this one in a new engine, and just looked mainly at the ground graphics?

'04 ran fine for me.  The service pack fixed a lot too

Dunno what kind of system you have, Nirvana...lots of people love the game, judging by the addons and 3rd party makers.

Call me crazy...could be your system...not the game ;)

Oh I love the game, I just started adding a lot of planes and stuff and it seemed to slow the game down to a crawl.  I was saying that in 2004 the ground was a blurry mass of squares and such for the most part.  Look at the before/after pics in that link, much more detail to the ground.

And my system isn't great, but it gets me by:aok

Problem is that MSFS has lots of short comings and they actually weakened the flight modelling in FS9 from what it was in the previous FS.
There just isn't any similar flight sims besides X-plane, which has its own short comings, mainly the lack of addon developers.
Hopefully MS improved the flight modelling this time, instead of ripping off more broken features in order to fix a bug.

Ive always liked MSFS. I think Ive owned them all. Unfortuately the only changes are the resolution in detail and a few scenario upgrades. The flying feels pretty close as it did in 5.0 to me.

  Plus you cant kill stuff.

I usually lag behind the "new and wonderful" curve. I've got a few copies of MSFS, but I never payed more than $20 for each.

Until you start using add-ons for FS2004 it's kinda boring.

I use -
Improved terrains, mesh and scenery.
Ultimate Traffic - airline timetables.
All the AIAardvark aircraft.
EvolveAI - Airbus and DC10
Some ProjectAI stuff
Of course FSPainters stuff not covered by others.

There are even proper AI variants for a lot of fighter aircraft now -
Henry Tomkiewiczs - Tornado, F-16 etc
Daisuke - F-18E/F/G
Others - A10

Transport etc -
Henry Tomkiewicz - C135
ProjectAI - C17
Daisuke - Greyhound, Viking

You haven't played FS2004 unitl your stuck in a queue behind a crap load of other aircraft to take-off or land.

Unfortuneately AIArdvark stopped doing aircraft earlier this year, but they were the ULTIMATE in models.
Luckily EvolveAI have taken up the torch.

Pfft.. AI's...  theres no way to experience FS2004 until you've learned to fly a plane as real as possible in a sim and then flown in the VATSIM multiplayer network for at least couple of hundred hours.

First impressions:

-The head bob is a nice touch.
-Only a 3D interior view, not sure how I feel about that.
-May just be my video card/driver but I have to exit the game anytime I go into a menu or the graphics are screwed up
-The water is nicely done, trees not so much
-Steering on the ground not as squirrely before

I've owned every version since the commodore version published by sublogic. I'll pick it up, just a question of when.

Provided there is an October.

A few thoughts.

System requirements:

I've got a fairly buff system - 2 GIG RAM, AMD X2 4400, and 2 Nvidia 7900 GTX's.
I couldn't break past 12 frames per second and that was with the FPS slider put up to 90. This thing choked my box like nothing I have seen - holy bloat - fix that ****.

Dynamic scenery:

All nice and good, but if you turn yr sliders up to see motorboats and hang gliders, kiss yr frame rate good bye.

Terrain resolutions:

The good part, is it looks like MS got the point that the 3 meter texture res wasn't gonna cut it with the new high res sceneries comming through the pipe in 2004. So they upped the resolution to as high as 7cm per pixle. Not a bad thought, but 2 years late in the timing.

Sounds like there is a video driver issue going on there. I have dual core 3.2, 2GB, atix800 pro and I'm getting much better frame rates at 1280x1024 with everything except aa cranked up. Are you going into the menu after the flight starts?

I'll try it - downloading now..lol

With this coming out and that il2/BOB thingy...flightsimmers are going to have to go out and buy a new top-of-the-line box in the next year or so...lol.

I'm starting to get worried my old amd 3200 / 1gm ram /.x800 is gonna have some trouble pushing the eyecandy.

Especially when you see a quote that basically says  "pc's that run our game currently at it's highest setting with no problems will have no problems running our next release at the very lowest settings" :D

I had this happen with Half Life 2 a month ago when i installed it.  Something wrong with my hard drive?

:) Lepaul.

As playing it went...

That game with default settings was almost a slideshow.  I don't know how to look up graphics performance but it wasn't good.

I don't have a slouch of a machine, either.

I didn't like the no "regular cockpit" view of the panel like in all other versions previous.  I rarely used the virtual cockpit and it appeared to be the only option in the selection menu.

With time compression I landed the CRJ (whoop-de-dooo)

I ended up sticking with the trike flour bombing.

When the full version comes out I probably won't buy it.  I'll eventually get it but won't pay a full price for it.  I plan on flour bombing most of the time, too.

Here is a tip to have a 2d cockpit in the demo planes :
. hit 5 from the numeric keyboard when in the plane.

If you have graphics corruptions, just go to the external view then go back to the cockpit view.

Voila! ;)

I usually bore quickly with the FS series.  I mean, after learning I can take off in a few unusal plans...and sometime land them...that's the end of the challenge for me

I wonder how they'll handle multiple monitor support on this version

Its all wonderful eye candy.  I can just count on both hands how many times Ive flown FS 2004 as it was.

(And a lot more after I added that killer F-104 addon)

But again, asides a few novel joy rides, thats it

Post by: Golfer on August 10, 2006, 06:09:57 PM
soooo...

mind emailing me that F-104??  The add-on airplanes I have all kinda suck.  Eaglesoft makes some fair business jets.  The F-14 I have looks great but the speedbrake is all out of whack.  The F-18 won't land properly (sinks through the runway and crashes each time)

Need something worthwhile.

Addon Aircraft (best at top)-

Boeings, MD80s, EMB-120/170/175, DC9's, Tu204/214 - http://www.ai-aardvark.com  (some of the links are old, to get them search http://www.avsim.com manually)

Airbus, ERJ's, DC10s - http://www.evolveai.com

Any others not covered by above - http://www.projectai.com (use V2 aircraft)

AI flightplans -

http://www.projectai.com

Anything not covered by above -

http://www.avsim.com
http://www.flightsim.com

If you want a single prog that adds a lot of aircraft and airlines ($30)
http://www.flight1.com/esd-products.asp?product=utraffic
Then start replacing their aircraft models with the aardvark and evolve ones.

Have fun.

Once you get 'bored' with civvy stuff you can add military aircraft -

Portland ANG F-15s with the KC tankers in the background.

The stuff that bugs me about the Flight sims is that everything is always perfect. IRL, u'll be dam lucky if both throttle/prop control run at the exact power/speed for the same setting.
The other stuff is the lack of aptitude to model the systems in details.

I mean what's there to do beside fly around and look at scenery?

It's relaxing - no need to watch your 6 :D

Anyway, with a good plane addon there are other challenges. In VATSIM network it's quite fun to fly under live ATC and other traffic. Radio can be full of chatter. Although it requires fairly lots of reading and some offline flying to become familiar with the onboard equipment - it's not simple to learn how to fly certain procedures and what not to do in a controlled airspace and how and when to do something.

Although I find air traffic controlling far more appealing. That is an ultimate challenge with tens of planes
I wish it'd be my real life job. Maybe in the future, who knows.

If you are really interested into the real flying, then FSX is something
for you, otherwise stay in IL-2 or AH ;)

I like the challenges, especialy in bad weather at night or so with
random engine failures!
I also like to fly the Helis around skyscrapers and land/start on them!

I enjoy pattern work, especially in a nice plane.. like an accurate Mustang, Jug, or B-17.

I also enjoy 'scouting' around an area that I know ..to see how accurate they got it.

I get a kick out of aerobatics ..trying to duplicate routines I have seen.

Then there's takin the SDK, an building a plane I would like to fly, and trying to make it as accurate as possible. (did a Ryan ST-A awhile ago, was a very nice flyer, made the 'stock' version and the supercharged Menasco version ..Clark Gable flew one).

I havent flown around the world in awhile ..last time I did that was usin the Beech Baron 58 .. was a challenge picking routes and packin as much gas as I could into the bird.

Had some memorable flights just goin from Denver to Phoenix ..them mountains go up purty high near Denver, and the Beech couldn't top em.
(was kinda funny . the 'stock' Ryan did just fine up to 15k or so)

I have a B-58 Hustler that is just a balls out hot rod to fly .. and the SR-71 ..crazy at 50k .. if you start to wobble yer gone!

..and try out the B-36 sometime .. MAN .. it takes ALL of LAX to get off the ground and even then you best aim out to sea, not over houses.. cause she's a bear to get that first coupla hundred feet of alt, but she flies very well once she gets up to speed an cleaned up.

Ya .. I enjoy flyin alla add-ons .. and I tweak the ones that are just dead wrong till they work like they should. Some you run into are junk .. but there are a lot of great ones out there.

-GE

I'm going nuts over a VATSIM data I've recorded during 16th and 17th days. I've been working for couple of days with PHP and SQL to get the data into usable form

All the flight data of Santa '06 event:
December 16th flights (http://www.kolumbus.fi/fishu/santa06/day1flights.html)
December 17th flights (http://www.kolumbus.fi/fishu/santa06/day2flights.html)

An example flight (http://www.kolumbus.fi/fishu/santa06/flights/MAH3033EFROLHBP929420_1.html)

It's still badly unfinished.
