Title: My Introduction
Post by: ASA335 on August 11, 2006, 02:17:29 AM
Welp, I’m a new guy here. A little about me-self:

Born and raised in a smallish town (Milwaukie) outside Portland, Oregon.

Drafted (among the last) into the Army in 1972.

First the Army made me a Watercraft Operator (landing craft) - I don’t swim and I get seasick.

I switched to Arty as a Forward Observer in 1974 - after I got “just missed” by my own units guns, I asked myself what the future looked like for an ex-FO in the civilian word; the answers didn’t look promising.

Made my final switch to what was known as the US Army Security Agency (USASA or ASA) in ’76 - loved it!

When they deactivated ASA in ’78 I remained with Military Intelligence until I retired in ’94.

Today I’m a sergeant with a Department of Public Safety (College Law Enforcement).

My hobbies are -

Firearms (Collect, shoot, and teach. I shot competition for almost twenty years, taught [coached] for about eighteen years, was a Plant Manager for Kimber Firearms, etc…)

History (especially Historical Reenactment [French and Indian Wars, Civil War, and American Mountain Man periods)

Gaming (primarily Strategy [Age of Empires, Total War, Civilization] and First Person Shooter [Rainbow 6/Raven Shield, Call of Duty, America’s Army], and have recently decided to try out Flight Sims [Microsoft CFS 1, 2, and 3; and now AH2])

Teaching ([OK, this is also one of the jobs I’ve had / I do - but I do it for free also because I like it.] Shooting [as mentioned above], Hunter Ed [specialty classes like handgun hunting, muzzleloader hunting, tracking/trailing, survival, etc…] Use of Force, Baton and OC, Field Training and Evaluation Program, etc…)

Photography (just getting back into it after twenty years away - love these new digital cameras)

I am interested in joining a squad, but I got burned while multi-playing in Americas Army online - too much whining, immaturity, cheating, and lack of teamwork or good tactics/strategy.

If there are any squads out there that would be willing to give me a try (understanding that I’m new to AH, I don’t want a repeat of my previous experience, and because of my duty position I may have some trouble being very active [but I’ll try]), I can assure them that I am a good team player, don’t take myself too seriously, level headed, eager to learn, and I can be amusing.

In Pursuit,

Welcome ASA.

Almost to the bottom is aa Squadron Forum. Squads that recruit read/post there. I recommend you fly with the folks for a while, to see if you like each other, if your attitudes, what you want out of game and your styles fit. Dont jump at the very first invitation you get :).

Whining, Immaturity and lack of teamwork...... well, unfortunatly i cant say I *never* ran into this here. But its not regular. [size=0]*cough - now guys dont make me a liar!!*[/size] Overall this is a great community.

IF you need any help, never hesitate to ask. Also check out the training facilities :).

Yeah, what Shatzi said. definately don't jump into the first squad you come across. Make some friends and fly with them a while before making a commitment.

Welcome aboard! I'm sure you'll find this is the best sim out there. And if you hear any whiners out there then use the .squelch command ! best feature in the game.

We must talk.

Welcome, as one geezer to another.  You'll love this place.  Just remember that the learning curve is STEEP.  Like any other artist, you must initially survive your mandatory period of suffering.

Stop into the Axis v Allies arena sometime.  Usually its best moments are between 9-11 p.m. Eastern Time.  Fewer people, but at least you don't have P-51s fighting Corsairs!

ASA335,

As Schatzi said... Do not jump into the first squad you find. Find a squad that fits your style of play. By this I mean some squads are historic and you fly only those that were flown during the war. These squads are usually very structured with CO on down.
Then you have the complete opposite fly what you like where you like. With the co more or less a figurehead so they can call it a squad.
Fly with a squad for a few day and see if it fits.

Also fly for all sides before you decide on anything.

Good luck with the new addiction.

Welcome to AH

I've only been here a little over a month and it's my opinion that this is one of the finest communities anywhere.  My experience thus far has been overwhelmingly positive.

As many have said don't jump in to the first squad that invites you.  Look around, look at their pages and forums, and see if you can find one that fits your desires and personality.

I was invited and joind the 332nd Flying Mongrels and I am having a blast.

You can check us out at http://332nd.org/site/index.php

Also if you haven't already I strongly recommend to anybody new to read up at netaces.org.  That place is my bible.

again welcome aboard and if I can be of any assistance to you feel free to pm me with a question or two.  If I don't know I know where to go look or the right people to ask.

oh and listen to schatzi.. that lady knows her business

QHat squads did you play with in America's Army?  I moonlight with the [160th_SOAR] there when AH gets on my nerves :P.

Ive been playign AA since its release v1.0.  Played with [82nd], [79th], [78th].  Now with a good group of mature players in the 160thSOAR.

Welcome to AH - it whoops AA!

ASA welcome aboard.

Two suggestions
1. Stick with one plane while you learn the ropes. Cannon mounted rides such as a the N1K2 or La7 will add some adreneline to your gunnery skills.

2. Once ensconced, spend the small fortune needed for a good set of gear. CH Products is the leader of the pack with a Fighterstick, throttle and rudder peddels running around $350. Next step down would be the Saitek X52 at $110 +/-  You're better off with money well spent vs an endless array of mediocre junk.

If you wind up with the Bishops, be sure to holler if you see any of The Flying Circus folks around. We're a small squad and always available to wing and train newbies.

ASA...welcome to AH2  :)
You are welcome to fly with the 44th Airmafia Wizeguys and Enforcers.
We have squad nights mon. starting at 8:00pm EST, and Sat starting at 9:00pm EST.
Please feel free to visit our website at Airmafia HQ (http://www.airmafia.com)
As the others have well stated. It is not recommended that you jump into any thing right off. This is why Mafia likes all its potential members to fly with us several nights to get the feel for the way we do things.
We fly Bishop. You can contact any Mafia member while online and find out what radio Channel we operate on. Best of luck to yas and welcome to Aces High.
Salute!

Welcome to your new addiction. :)

Take some time to learn the game, flying & shooting can seem difficult at the start, but it's well worth the time spent.

And as Oldman said, check out the other arenas as well. AvA (Axis vs Allies Arena) has fun setups to fly different planes, then there are the Special Events (Special Events Arena, see the calendar at the top of this bulletin board) which are fun and exciting to fly (usually 1 life only).

Welcome to Aces High!

Thanks all!

I appreciate the advice, and I will check out the play and players.

Hope to bump into some of you tonight!

Oldman 731:

PM me with your Kimber questions and I’ll answer the best I can - some of my answers are even correct, and free :lol !

Casper1:

It’s been two or three years since I gave up on AA. I ended up not joining any squad since I couldn’t separate the decent squads from the “chaff” - just too many lame excuses for players - even the three guys I semi-regularly joined in with on AA had had enough and quit about the same time I did.

The game itself had fantastic potential - such a shame.

TinmanX:

Too many non-native Oregonians here now! The place is being ruined!

Peace to all,

Technically speaking, you are correct; the announcement was made in '76 that ASA was being deactivated, but it took almost two years for it to fully happen. I was with the 335th ASA at Ft. Lewis, WA when the announcment was made, but upon arrival at the 408th ASA in Panama, RP in '77 they were still under USASA and not yet INSCOM.

I was a 13E at Yakima Firing Center, WA.

I did two tours in the FRG as a 98J; first one at EUDAC, Patch Brks, outside Stuttgart, and the second started with the 109th MI at Wildflecken and then moving to the 1st AD G2 at Bad Krueznach (living in Mainz).

My second time at Ft. Lewis ('84/'85) I was with the 9th MI, 9th ID.

I was a SSG and assigned first (for five months) as a Plat Daddy (Platoon Sergeant) for a platoon of 50 - 55 soldiers, and then (for seven months) as a Platoon Leader (they were short of Lieutenants) - best tactical assignment of my career.

I was selected for SFC while I was there, and “pinned” (promoted) my final day there.

Because of my achievements while the Platoon Leader, my Company and Battalion COs both recommended me for Warrant Officer, but I foolishly turned it down (I thought I had good reasons at the time :cry ).

Hiya ASA :)

I was born in Portland, Oregon. Went to some wacked out catholic school close to the Fred Myers store on 82nd ave long ago .. then to John Marshall high school for awhile.

Few years ago (ok .. decades and more past) ..while stationed at George AFB (workin the 105G and later the F4G) .. wife an I cruised up to visit relatives (Uncle who was on Guadalcanal and some others).
Saturday nite, cruised 82nd ave ..pulled into a parkin lot fulla nice cars ( I was drivin a bright yellow '70 dart 340 car, superbee stripes, hood scoops, cam, headers, 3.91's inna back .. my 'fambly car' back then ..ran 13's in the 1/4) .. some yokel spotted my california plates an made a loud comment about 'tourists' .. so I stopped, got outta the car, and yelled across the parkin lot 'How many folks here born here in Portland.. raise yer hand!'

Yanno .. not one single person there did. Except me.

I made a rather loud comment about 'tourists' in return.

Was a Kodak moment :)

-GE (street racer ..always been a bit .. er .. 'direct' as they say)
