Title: How to install unofficial skins?
Post by: Simaril on August 11, 2006, 03:00:15 PM
Thanks to the kindness of a squadmember, I have a customized unofficial .bmp P-51 skin that should work for tooling around offline.

However, since the new skins are saved in .res format, I'm not sure how to set things up to enable the custom one for offline use. Putting the file in the skins folder didnt work (which made sense after I thought about it), and creating a subfolder identified as P51D25 didnt let it show up either.

Any ideas?

In your HTC/AH2/Skins folder, create a new folder named p51d1.

Into this folder, place your custom BMPs.

In this same folder, create a text file called p51d.txt. Open this TXT file and type something short like "for Simaril by squaddie" in it. This will be the descriptive text you see when choosing in the hangar.

Launch the game and choose your offline skin in the hangar.

I havent checked but D25 could be the next skin # P51D is the directroy prefix -- each skin #1 -> ??? is added after the prefix -- so the 7th released pony skin is in direct p51d7

Yeah, thats what I was trying to do. There are 20 P-51D skins right now, and I wanted to give some room for new ones I knew were coming without creating duplicatee name conflicts.

OK, I tried that...after ahving deleted one of the .res skins and using the same skin# to make the P51Dx folder.

It didnt work. Does the process stay the same now that the standard system has moved from the .bmp folder arrangement to the .res system? Or, is the problem that I run the game at 512 instead of max texture settings?

The RES system and the BMP system are separate animals... you did not need to delete the RES file. RES is for "official" skins, what you see online.

Ignore the RES files you see, apples and oranges. Do not renumber anything except the new folder named "P51D1". Yes, and make sure your skin res size setting matches the skin you want to see.

Maybe you also have a problem with the cache ah2 generates?

Now I'm getting puzzled.

I made sure the skin was 512, and still no help.

Then I deleted all cache files, forced regeneration, and no custom skin.
