Anyone see the new BMW 335? Pretty much the same car as last year's 330 but they dropped in a twin turbo good for 300hp and 294ish ft/lbs. The new coupe styling looks pretty snazzy, the sedan looks like it did last year. Price is up only a little bit and fuel mileage is supposedly about the same as the non-turbo with 255hp.
300hp puts it up with the previous M3. The next M3 (2008 I think) gets a 400hp V8 so the new turbo and sports package in the 335 lets BMW 6-cyl fans get near-M performance without having to go up to the new V8 next year.
Plus the 335i will a 300 hp 4-door sedan... Not many of those on the market except for the little-window-gangsta styled dodges.
-
Blasphemy!!!!
:furious
Personally, I'm waiting for 2009.
-
I'm not sure about the styling.

Just how much ride does Biff and Buffy need to get shrimp for the BarB? :)
Beemers!

Jackal,
You're just jealous :)
Seriously, it's a nice car. WTF is wrong with wanting a nice car, unless you're a jealous b**ch?
-
Pfffft Fools....
I was driving Beemers, Merc's and Porches on the AutoBahn mid to late '80s before some of you were born.
This, my car is better than yers is childish, move on to things that mean something.
And if you have to carpet yer Garage for your car...seek help!
Mac
-
Actually the Japanese - Infiniti G35 and Lexus IS350 both have ~ 300HP engines in their 3 series competitors without going to the trouble of Turbos like BMW...
Kinda puzzled about this engine choice...
-
Mac,
Who's saying "better"? Jokes about Rip's garage aside, it's a nice car and people just crap all over anyone who says so :(
That said, I like having short, durable, anti-static treated carpet on the floor around my workbench when possible. Makes it easier to focus on precision work when I'm not worrying about my sore feet :)
Grun,
100 hp per liter isn't exactly all that easy... Most 300hp cars I know of are either larger displacement 6cys, v8s, or turbos. I think they do get some fuel efficiency benefit out of the deal.
300hp in a package suitable for a nice 4-door sedan... Well, that takes displacement, expensive engine tech, or a turbo, and there just aren't that many decent ones on the market. The hp and torque curves on this sucker are pretty flat and fat for a turbo and I think that sets it apart from some of the very few other 300hp options.
-
They're pretty attractive with that turbo/engine package, Eagl. I'm not too wild about the design but that is low on my priority list when shopping. I'd rather have performance than looks.
I figure I'll get another 5-10 years out of my 2001 at least so it won't be for me.
-
I can get one for essentially invoice plus tax (a savings of about $3500 below what any dealer will sell one for), but I'd have to wait about 4 months for delivery. Still debating...
-
BMW need to keep away from the smurfy stick while designing their new cars. They are getting progressively uglier and uglier.
it was going pretty well until they designed the back... the compact looks especially rediculous.

Wow...that looks like a Solara...which is a BAD thing :lol
For me, if I'm dropping big bucks on a car it better get me to where I'm going in a fun manner, but more importantly it better look like it cost 40,000+(just a figure)

Jealous of those who wish to play the Yupster?
I don`t care much for yupster rides or yupsters in general.

IMHO .. beemers an their ilk are 'nice' cars.
I've never owned a 'nice' car.
I prefer the 'dark side' :)

2008 M3 suppose to be 400 HP.

In the US market, when looking at any German car, you can get equal performance, utility, etc. from a Japanese car for 2/3 the price, with better reliability. But some people like to spend more just because they can, and those are the ones Jackal is talking about.
-
I've driven a lot of miles in the southwest. For that, german cars were just better driving machines. Japanese imports weren't nearly as cheap and glitchy as domestic stuff like the Mustang, but still didn't feel as seemlessly put together as audis and the like.
I did have a lot of electrical issues with my VW passat (and wasn't alone from the looks of the dealers' maintenance shops), but other than that, it and the audis and bmws I drove were more like the sort of car I'd design myself than the japanese were.
If both had the same reliability, and the german brands made stripped out models for 2/3 the regular price, I wouldn't give the japanese cars much thought.
Roundabout way of saying there's not just yuppiness in the BMWs' attraction.
Sort of like the NSX has no cheaper alternative.
-
oh boy , now we are going to hear about "German road cars" and "Teutonic engineering".

These cars pwns amerikan dinosaurs, high priced euro saloons and will out-accelerate, outhandle, and even keep up with supercars 3-4x the price, weight, and power (not in ghey boooring straight-aways like in NASCAR, but in challengine twisty tracks!)
These are the "real" mucle cars of the 21th century at reasonable price... :)

Just put a decent aftermarket turbos on these cars and you'll be launched 0-100km/h standstill like on a catapult of an aircraft carrier.
here is a video cementing the fact that EVOs can keep up with supercars 3 times the price, weight, and power. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bm2XO5_CcXk)
I've driven EVO VIII (my neighbor in my apartment building) and it is easy to drive (thanks to its advanced All wheel drive S-AWC) and it is not for people with weak stomach (it is SCARY!). On his Evo VIII he had aftermarket HKS turbos, intercoolers, exhaust, and spoilers removed to make the car look practical and not too intimidating.

So what you are saying is they are lightweight and can zip around corners, but they are useless as far as top speed is concerned.

The absolute top speed for this car is something left to be desired if you compare this sedan to 2-door exotics like Corvette C6, Viper, and Ferraris. If you talk about cornering speed now that's a different story.
You can achieve higher speeds at cornering than you thought realistically possible. It's almost a cheat because of the AWD system they use... I dare say the AWD in EVO and STi are the most advanced in the world and safe and easy to drive as long as you don't fret.
It still shocks me how the engineers at Mitsubishi and Subaru can extract more than 300 hp on a 2 liter engine (size of a milk carton!) and still keep up (or outperform) the 2-door exotics mentioned above.
I've driven this car once and it's really fun (and scary!), especially at twist roads.

Ah, so unless you want to lose a race you need one of those big American dinosaurs. Makes sense. :aok

The owners as a rule.
They are , for the most part, around here, given to the trophy wife of the yup who is busy smooching rear in an attempt to smooch his way to the top of the comapny ladder.
Yaknow the type. The females who realy never had it to begin with, but hubby sends em down for a little silicone, a tuck here, a little nip there, some botox and fat injected here and there, etc, etc.
It certainly can`t be the appearance of the Beemer that is the attraction. they are smurfy beyond smurfy.
I sort of prefer a car with a little more message and a little more ooommmpf, so to speak.
To each his own. I just don`t have any pink clothes or any with lace. :)

depending on track;)
Put the evo IX and an american dinosaur at Laguna Seca and Suzuka and it's no contest, Evo pwns. Now put these 2 cars at oblong shaped track at Talladega and the american will win because usually their gear rations are not super-close as the EVOs.
-
John, that's my point, if you had no previous experience of cars and had lived on a deserted planet with empty roads of all kinds, the teutomachines wouldn't be without appeal.
I agree the recent beemers are like sculpted marshmallows left to melt on the barbeque.
Jackal, who cares about other owners.. like you said, are you wearing your clothes for others or yourself? Do you prefer Aces High because of its mechanics, or Il2 for its eye candy? If you had to choose from a dozen planes which one to fly, while blindfolded except once in the cockpit, what would hold your attention?
-
AWmac,
My dad hated Beemers, liked the 911. He used to own both in the 80s. He recently drove a friends 5 series and was actually quite impressed with it, ride quality wise.
I don't think you can compare car manufacturers from previous models, especially the ones from before I was born:D
Back on the "topic"
As far as rice rocket/muscle cars/german high dollars, if you compare them you probably don't know much about life. Mine's better is silly, each of them provide a great driving satisfaction and fun factor. Mastering a rear engine Porsche on a twisty road is as fun as mindlessly throwing an AWD car around.
There's plenty of late teenagers videos around , showing their respective street monster pulverizing the "opposition". You see Vtecs smoking diablos, BMWs someking rice rockets, civics smoking big blocks, big blocks pulverizing rice twin turbos. The technology is out there for people with some money to build any type of car in a UFO. At any rate, even if it's an ego thing to say my $30 civic smokes your fancy exotic, the fancy exotic got a level of class/sexyness factor a notch above a huge spoiler flaping in the wind.:) I would not trade a Modena for a 900HP Supra.

Viper is a dog, always has been. Neither the Viper or a Vette are "Exotics". Lotus SE made 264hp stock and 280hp with overboost. The S4s made 300hp from the same 2.2l 4 cylinder.

Viper is a steaming pile of cow dung. I've driven one, acceleration is an issue.
-
:huh
I've driven a 1996 GTS for a day, and acceleration was not an issue. The ride was very uncomfortable for street driving, very bouncy and the seats are very hard. The positioning of the gas pedal was bugging me out the most, too "flat" forcing me to extend my right foot.
Have you driven a 2002 Z06? Holly smoke that's a thing of beauty to drive (especially when u pick it up on ebay for $31K with 23,000 miles):D
Fairly interesting reference table:

iirc, a WRX STi is a 2.5l, which is why it doesn't qualify for WRC, and a regular WRX with it's 2.0 does.
Also, the STi's computer says you can't go over... I think it's 138. Plenty fast for stoplight to stoplight racing (which will get you jail + car confiscation now)... but not exactly king of the interstate. Been faster in a 440hp '86 1/2 Supra (and much more scared).
Probably has the best fun for $$ out there... but it has its limitations :(
Now, lets look at a REALLY fast car :)
0-60 in 2.6
0-100 in 5.3
0-150 in 11.8
30-70 in 1.8
0-100-0 in 9.4 (true measure of a sports car)
100-0 braking in 3.6
1.176g on the skidpad
204mph on a 1.5mile straight
231mph top speed
Standing quarter mile of 9.9 @ 143mph (< 10sec from the facory)
You can take on Enzos, Koenigsgg, McClarens, Saleens, Jag xj220s, Carrera GTs, Zonda's, Ruf R's, F40s, F50s, the Mercedes SLR, & any type of Lambo for anywhere between 1/3 to 1/14 of the price, and win consistently.
Brit design + chevy horsepower.
All hail the king.

I drove a 98 RT/10 with a little engine mod work. (550hp is what the guy claimed - he is a bigwig for Automotive News). I was left with the feeling that it needed "more". I beat on it, and noticed how insanely uncomfortable the seats, pedal position, etc was.
I haven't been in a Z06 yet.

My last project car was a 440 powered '71 plymouth duster .. 3020 lbs with a full tank of gas, ~600hp. (it was *not* stock re: the two 850 Holley's were atop a tunnel ram, etc)
There is no comparison between the Duster and any beemer ever made.
Far more apart than apples and oranges.
Duster made me smile *every* single time I fired it up .. the mufflers right below the door comin off the fenderwell Hookers were LOUD.
At 35mph, in 3rd gear, with street tires on... it would lose traction at half throttle and drift slowly sideways till the steering wheel hit the lock.
With 13" slicks at 10lbs of air pressure.. it took my breath away on launch.
Not many cars could hang with it at the track off the line, 60 foot times were around a second. (time slips are in a photo album that has been packed away for over 10 years .. I would have to dig to get em).
Got her runnin in 1976 .. last pass at LACR was in 1991 ..sold it a couple years later. Never broke a motor, wore out a fuel pump and tars .. oh yaa ..she burnt up street tars real guud :)
Made it to the Bracket finals 4 different years, drove it back an forth to work, cruised Van Nuys, Fremont, E-street, Central in Phx, drove it on tdy from George AFB to Nellis Red Flag ..17mpg at 80mph.
It was an efficient motor.
I even had it in my driveway when I was at Seymour Johnson AFB :) ..
..no one in town would race. ("dem California cars -shakes head- ..they just crazy fast" from one of the locals .. LOL)
As for the Z06 vettes .. I have a video from the vette forum ..guy took an IRS 2001 Z06 vette with drag radials in the back an clocked 8.90 at 151 mph in the quarter. Got license plates, drives it every day to work an back.
I believe he mentions usin a centrifugal supercharger and aluminum heads .. basic bolt on stuff. He posted the video on the forum.
Says the car dyno's 500+ hp at the rear wheels.
Now me .. just personal preference .. I'd prefer to squash fart-carts usin a 6-71 and more cubic inches ..say .. around 540 or so to start. Mebbe boost up to a 600+ cubic inch monster motor in a coupla years.
In a 3000lb daily driver.
You know .. when street tires just aren't enough .. etc.

There is a video with a Civic beating the snot out of a Vette. Question is this.
Are you getting more bang for the buck by buying a Vette? Or is it better to buy a Camaro and make up the difference in mods? I'd choose the latter.

my guess is for fuel mileage... keeping the beemer at lowish rpm's, the turbos wont spool much, so you'll be getting the mileage of whatever the engine is non-turbo. to get that same power boost non-turbo, you'd most likely end up sacrificing quite a bit of economy.
and besides... cars that come turbo'd stock are always running less boost than the block can handle. think of the fun you can have with that  :aok (I'd still go with an evo or a scooby if I wanted to play with boost tho)

stock vette? it isn't *too* expensive to get a civic to run faster than a stock vette (when you compare it with buying a brand new car), but even just a supercharged vette with bone stock internals will dust any civic with less than $50k under the hood.
oh, and a civic will only hang from a roll-- traction in a heavily modded civic? nope.. not even an LSD, traction bars and slicks on drag radials will get a boosted civic to hook up.

I drove "beaters" that never needed anything more than comprehensive insurance and paid cash for them all. (Exception: Wife and I bought a new 1991 Ford F150 and 1999 Explorer that SHE drove to work, while I drove the beaters!) until my 41st birthday. Then I bought my first new car, BMW 330ci. Now, I'm a redneck at heart...so you can't paint all your BMW owners with a broad brush. Many friends asked where I was going to put the gun rack...anyway, if you love driving around curves twice as fast as anyone except a Porsche, test drive a BMW and report back. You'll understand why some of us rednecks buy them. :)
I might mention the reason *I* test drove one is a friend had 190,000 miles on his, and when I drove his car, I thought the damn thing was new!

Presently I have 325Ci -05 and if I just had money I would instantly swap it to new 335i coupe.
The new one looks really "new" compared to dated e46 look which is nice but ...dated..? (98 desing)
The new 3 liter twinturbo is just the best bang for the buck even compared to V8 NA engine.... wait a ½ year and there are tons of tweaking chips and pulleys and intercoolers for that and its much more cheaper to get horsepower out of turbo engine than from naturally aspirated. Also smaller engine keeps the MPG at acceptable level. Here in Finland one liter of 95-oct (comparable to 91 - 93 there) costs around 1.4€ so when the car uses 14€ worth of gas for 100 km it starts getting expensive..
but if you have money to buy the car you wont be whining about gasoline prices..(well equipped 335i here around 80k€--->96k$ or so...)

Masher .. I've owned two Camaro's .. a red '69 SS 396 4-gear car, (which I sold a week after I bought it to someone who offered me 3 times what I paid for it) ..and a '96 Z-28 ..both were ok cars .. fun.
Not as much fun as my '64 Malibu with the tunnel-ram L-88 and 4-gear.
Not as much fun as my '67 Hemi GTX 4-gear car.
Not as much fun as my Duster.
I don't get any heartburn over civics, beemers, whatever :)
I owned and raced an '87 CRX in Gymkhana (blowin thru cones in a parkin lot on a saturday afternoon was a blast) ..C-stock class .. placed 2nd.
One fine day had a beemer on my bumper tryin to follow me thru some twisties up near San Jose .. he ate the guardrail .. hard.
I didn't. -evil grin- .. CRX cornered very well.
Friend of mine owned a 7-series beemer.. loved it .. his wife scraped a wheel on a curb the other day ...*cough* .. 3500 to replace the wheel. Coupla months ago a rock broke one of his fog lights .. er .. 1500 for that.
The honeymoon was over, he traded it on a Nissan Pathfinder.
Not gonna buy a beemer, mercedes, audi, ..frankly the german version of Chevy (which those are) are 'nice' cars, but .. not as much fun to drive as what I enjoy driving.
What I would like to do now .. is get a vette ..an tweak it a bit.
for fun. ... prolly *ruin* it according to a purist .. but .. it will be fun to drive.

Carpeted Garage? Sounds interesting but I can't imagine the kind of steamcleaner you'd need to keep it looking good.
Tiles, inho, are prettier, more durable and easier to clean. Besides, all the rich kids are doing it.

Then they came out with that darned new Stang.
Well, those just look so good in Red.
I haven't enjoyed driving a car this much in years.
Problem is, Now I'm looking at the Roush....
GE you would have liked my 72 Ranchero 429CJ 640HP, I don't care how much you stuff into a ricer, you just cannot duplicate the feel of a built V8.

Show me a ricer with 640hp and I'll show you an oversized handgrenade on wheels. The engine life on something that blown must be pathetic.
Want rediculous power, looks and, uh affordability (well, not so much), there simply is no substitute. Apparently, past 100mph, this thing can edge out the mighty 1001 hp Veyron, and for less than half the price!

BMW was recently rated 3rd in reliability, just behind Toyota and Honda.

yassir there are some nice toys out there :)
Imagine that 429 in a '63 falcon? ..'65 stang 2+2? ..heck even a '70 mach 1? -evil grin-
That's what I enjoy doin.
I am soo lookin forward to doin another project car :) .. with luck I will start in December (near Christmas time) .. with a car purchase.
The newer vette's can be tweaked with bolt-ons very well.. under nine second quarter mile times are mind blowing for a daily driver ..and nothin stickin out the hood :)
The older vettes beg for a 6-71 out the hood and as much Rat motor as you can get under it :) Tubbed, dana 60 an coil-overs, huge stickies in back an mayhap wheelie bars would serve notice to the fart carts ..this american dinosaur will T-Rex yer Honda, dood :)

Oh that 429 in a Falcon! Now that would be something sweet lol
I wanted an older Boss stang so bad, but everything I could find has been hotrodded or rusted out so bad it's not worth it. So I got a new one, chickened out lol Don't have the time right now for a project, passed up a 68 Stang Coupe at the first of the year, Great Price, but the rust, Man I can do anything to a car but I Hate Rust!!
The Mach 1 is the Last mustang I have liked until the new ones. That car just has Monster written all over it. My brother in law has a 71 Mach, and it's really in great shape, but it's just not right. That body is when they all went wrong. Its a great car, but it just isn't a stang.
hehe, side note, here's some fun if you get bored.
Back just out of high school, bout 81, my friends Mike, Chris and I took a 302 out of a pickup, and torched apart a 1968 Datsun Picup Looked like this (http://www.austinev.org/evalbum/39)
He had the 67 Goat, I had the Ranchero, other friend Chris had the 56 Ford F150.
Cut the firewall out, cut the floor pan mostly out, and stuffed the 302 in her. Strapped on a shortened 9" rear end with a pair of 50s on the back, and the 4 speed out of the truck. Had to sit kind of side saddle in it so you could work both pedals, which were heated and bent out of the way so they'd work.
Took 1 whole week to rip and rebuild that truck. We pulled it out onto the street one friday night after a few bottles of courage, I Lost the bet so had to take the first drive in it.
By the time I hit 4th gear, the tires had all but melted off and I was still pretty much near the driveway.
Took it back as it was Totally out of control and nearly impossible to drive. So, we torched some more and put an automatic on it lol that helped, a little.
Oh the good old days of being a country boy with Nothing else to do.
