Title: Bare metal Bf 109 G6/g14
Post by: Hazzer on August 15, 2006, 10:44:06 AM
I read somewhere that their were some bare metal 109's in 1945 ramjager pilots used them to ram usaaf Bombers, these aircraft were unpainted carried either one or no mg's or cannon and had no radio. Also they used a bare metal 109 g6 in 1944 to catch mosquitos,I can't find any pics though i think jg 300 flew these aircraft

I read about the ramjager in a book,he and a friend had to abort when their cockpits iced up,but others were succesful!

We be nice to see in game if anyone can find a source.

I dont believe they did that.  Ofcourse there may have been individuals but not in large scale...

You are thinking of the crowd that flew on April 7, 1945 if memory serves.

There's a book specific to that day called "The Last Flight of the Luftwaffe-The Suicide Attack on the Eighth Air Force, 7 April 1945" by Adrian Weir.

Hajo Herrmann put out a call for volunteers and had about 2000 pilots to choose from.  Without reading the entire book again, they didn't get anywhere near that many in the air, closer to 200 109s of which 60 were recalled.

The 109s were modified G14s or K4s that had only a single cowling mounted MG retained with only 60 rounds of ammo.  Armor and other bits was supposed be removed as well but it's unclear how much was done once the 109s got to "Schulungeslehrgang Elbe" as the unit was called.

Apparently the 109s retained their radios but they could only recieve as the 109 pilots could not talk to each other.

Thats right guppy april the 7th,200 aircraft flew that day, according to the 4 pilots  I read about they had to reach 10000 11000 mtrs most mention having no guns others having 1 13mm with 50 rounds some say they had no radios others that they had radios but could not transmit and one mentions that his aircraft had no camouflage i suspect to lighten it.most of them were very young and from training schools and had not hitherto seen action, they had a choice of the infantry or volunteering for this mission.
