I read the book while I was in Panama last month.  One of the most heartbreaking books I have ever read.  I truly hope Spielberg and Eastwood do it justice.

Just saw the trailer.  Brought it all back.  Especially with Harlon's mom recognizing her boy.

Also the cockpit shot from the F-4U looked very good.

I noticed one of the characters they showed in trailer was also in Windtalkers staring Nicholas Cage...  Don't know his name though..

That would be the "indian", Adam Beach.
AFAIK, lots of our gear was used in "Windtalkers", and some of our Sergeants had been working on it.
Then there is Barry Pepper who was the sniper in "Saving Private Ryan".

His ship was one of the ones that particiapted in the bombardment and in providing off shore fire support

Wow, looks like it just might be an emotional movie, no more of the combat this combat that.

Glad to see the guy from windtalkers in it though, he's always had me from the beg.

The super-emotional war movie thing has been overplayed.  Saving Private Ryan was on the borderline of being too sappy, Thin Red Line was too.  But this movie looks like it takes the cake.

You must be one of those people that liked Pearl Harbor for its historical aspects.

And I can tell you have never borne witness firsthand of a vet  who while in the middle of telling you about something that happened stopped mid sentance and all of a sudden going into that same exact thousand mile stare that the old man had in Prvt Ryan as he flashed back and relived the episode. The whole time pointing into the distance going "And, and, and" then silence as he looked up and tears flowing freely down his face Completely oblivious to you trying to snap him out of it for a full 10 minutes.

Sappy my arse

War is hell, it does untold damage to the human mind and body, that is irreversible.

Portraying that only alows us that don't understand a small glimpse into the minds of veterans, because some are just too afraid to ask.

You have shamed yourself in the eyes of many if not all veterans.

Grow up..

I took a train trip in Germany once with my boss for the week who was a carpenter.
He was drafted for a flak unit when he was 15 (1943) together with his whole class.
He told me about this life, he did obviously have to fight his emotions while doing so. Their casualty rate (dead that is) was 50% by the end of the war.
Going past Cologne, with the cathredal lit up in the dark he did get that remote look.
Then he muttered, "you should have seen what the city was like at the war's end. It was so completely destroyed apart from the cathredal. Then he shook his head and I could see his eye (only had one) was watery.

Call it sappy, but that was RL.

First I'm hearing about this movie, looks cool.  I've been very interested in Iwo Jima and the Pacific campaign in general ever since a few summers ago, when me and the famdamily were visiting my Uncle and Granddad who are buried at Arlington.  We were at my Grandfathers grave and I noticed a few graves over one of the markers had an emblem of the raising of the flag on Suribachi (sp?)  We could only surmise that that was the grave of one of the raisers, so I took note of the name, Renee Gagnon, did some research when we got home and sure enough, he was one of 'em...

Flags of our fathers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiOMtdneUVc)

Anyone here know anything more detailed about this movie? Given the subject matter and Eastwood as the director, I think this may be a great film.

Read the book.  It'll give you a whole new perspective on the **** that went on in the Pacific.  And I ain't just talking about Japanese acting horrific on Allied troops, some of the American admirals deserved to be called out as well for doing what they did to the Marines.

Read the book.

Never read the book first.
If you dont you will never enjoy the movies.

I prefer to see the movie first then read the book THEN i get mad at the movie.
Jurrassic park is a classic example of this.
If youve seen the movie and havent red the book, read it.
Two entirely different stories.
And you will be royally pissed they didnt make the movie in the image of the book.

The only exeption I can think of to this rule is Band of Brothers

I normally agree with this but there is so much in the book that there is no way it could be in the movie.  There may be hints to them in the movie but without reading the book you'd never know.  As this is an Eastwood/Speilberg co-production and Mr. Bradley is also in the credits I am sure as much as possible will be in the movie.  I am really looking forward to this movie as well.

The flag that was in the picture made famous around the world was the second flag hoisted that day, the first one was too small and couldn't be seen by those on the shore. Where did that second flag come from? Little bit of service trivia for those that might want to look it up.

FYI the author of the book visited the set of the combat scenes, and was quite happy with what he saw.

According to official Marine Corps history, the flag was given to Lt. Ted Tuttle by Ensign Alan Wood on LST 779, and then given to the flag-raisers.  Coast Guard Historian's office records claims by Robert Resnick that the flag came from LST 758, given to flag-raiser Rene Gagnon.  It was attatched to a length of old Japanese water pipe.

I think the old theory was that the flag originated at a supply depot at Pearl Harbor.

The flagpole was at least a whole-drawn japanese waterpipe, with a (bullet?) hole in one end. It was quite heavy, some 100 lbs I think.
BTW, I recall Rene Gagnon's grandson writing on a BB, I think here.

That goes with the official Marine Corps history, that the flag would have been issued from Pearl.  I would assume no mater which LST it came from, the supplies onboard would have been issued at Pearl Harbor.

Here's (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3939121847638029622&q=The+fighting+lady) a 20 min Technicolor film "To The Shores of Iwo Jima." Gives an overview of what was going on. The color film was taken during the battle, including of course the raising of the colors on Mt. Suribachi.

Early screening of the movie here last night, I believe for military and former military only.  They interviewed our one local survivor for the newspaper.  Its funny, I've talked to the guy dozens of times, he's very active in the gun shows and clubs.  Never knew he was at Iwo Jima.  I hear he was very impressed with the movie.

Looking forward to it.
I had a great uncle there, and I belive he's still alive and living in Florida. Wonder how I can track him down, - only know his forename.
(For someone living in Florida it's a very rare name though)
