The Russian coast guard insisted that the vessel defied several orders to stop and made dangerous manoeuvres, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.
I suppose those unarmed fisherman are quite dangerous?

Hey, after the USS Cole, I can't blame them. You never know.

When in territorial waters of another country if your orderd to stop, you stop. Or risk getting blown out of the water
-
I see no issue with this at all. Liek Dred said, if the authorities order you to stop, then you best stop or accept the consequences.
Matter of fact, I call kudos for thier action. If it would have been the U.S., instead of Russai, they would have had to contact a lawyer, the ACLU, the ASPCA, Green Peace, Gay Rights, a lawyer, and the ACLU (just to be sure), before slapping thier hands with a cotton towel.
Evene then, they probably would have been sued by the Cotton growers association for misuse and malignment of thier product.

Well, technically the two countries are still at war, right? I wonder if the other 3 fishermen are being treated as POWs?

The USSR signed in Tokyo Bay... why are they still at war?

The islands were seized by the Soviet Union at the end of the war in 1945
It's not like they were defending the Motherland...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet-Japanese_joint_declaration_of_1956The Soviet Union did not sign the Treaty of Peace with Japan in 1951, and the state of war between the two nations technically remains.

One of the Captain`s on the Deadliest Catch series recounted an incident where he outran and lost Russian boats trying to get him to stop.
He said he wasn`t in Russian waters, but they had a different view. :)
I , personaly, would feel the same way. If there was a snowball`s chance in hell of evading them, I would do so.
Dealing with Ivan on the high seas is a good way to come up missing .
