http://www.flagsofourfathers.net/trailer.shtml
Looks like they actually filmed some scenes on Iwo...
-
Also made two versions.
-
The beach landing and the combat scenes with the bunkers vs cratered lava and black sand are from Iceland.
The beach is called Sandvík and is on the Reykjanes noodleula.
Later they got to film some on IWO.
-
the scenes where the officer is walking along the beaches of Iwo and Surabachi is in the background looks awsome!
Yes, this trailer is the japanese counterpart to Flags of our fathers.
-
It could be suribachi, in reality, for they did some shots on Iwo.
The beaches and the sandberm looked identical, so did the lava and dunes/heaps. So, it could also be Iceland+editing.
I met Bradley on the set. He said that the Iwo Jima vets would not be able to tell the difference. He should know a bit, he's been there 4 times.
I'm already all wriggling with excitement ;)

Clint Eastwood aka marketing Genius??
Make two versions and sell both at full price...

2 scripts, 2 different films, but very good use of the expensive combat footage ;)
Apart from the actors and the stuntmen some shots had some 600 extras.
Compare it with Saving private Ryan, Flags had 17 Higgins boats instead of 5, as well as several LVT's, Shermans, trucks, halftracks, jeeps, Howitzers and god-knows what. All shipped from the USA to Iceland, and restored to operable condition if needed. a couple of weeks with that much must have been expensive.
So, he makes good use of it ;)

Read this book on the plane last week. I hope the movie does it justice.
