After reading widewing's post on the hellkitty last month, thought i'd give it a try for a while. Took me a few days to get used to it, adjusting to 50 cals and such, but im really loving it now, had more success in it than any other plane ever lol, think i have 45/6 kills to deaths which, for me is quite the achievement, and that isnt B n Z either, plain furballing.
Would love to find a few other kitty pilots and do some DA training with me sometime :)

Drop by the TA on a weeknight and we can practice all you wish. I'm usually in there no later than 9 PM Eastern US time, but can get in about an hour earlier if you prefer. Usually present during early evening are Murdr, REN and several MA regulars. There'll be lots of opportunities for furballing.
My regards,

well, 9pm est is 2 am here, but ill try make it in until a bit before then :) thanks again WW :)

Look me up if i'm on.

switched from the F4Us to the Hellcat a couple of days ago. I just wanted to try it out......I havent got out of it except for a couple of sorties.... My K/D sucks in general but its 2/1 in the hellcat...... its a beast.
-
The Hellcat gets my nod of approval, on the rare moment you find me out of my 38 you might catch me in a Hellcat, i feel like less dead meat in that thing. ;) :p
-
And after you get comfortable in the HellCat ... jump into the WildCat (FM2).
!!! Phear the "MildCat" !!!

Do not listen to slapshot. The FM2 sucks.
He has a high fever and is delusional.

FM-2 would be as sweet a ride as you could get if you could only strap some RATOs to it.
But I'll stick with my F4U.

I like the FM-2, it's a great deal of fun. However, once it gets slow the F6F will gobble it up. You can point to the FM-2's poor turn rate. It can turn very small circles, but it does so slowly, taking 5 seconds more than the F6F to turn a complete circle. That is a huge difference, and the Wildcat's 25 foot smaller turn radius is insufficient to offset the rate differential.
What hurts the FM-2 is that its supercharger does not kick in below 5,000 feet, which results in zero power increase using WEP. Above 5k and below 13,000 feet, the added power of WEP increases the turn rate, and the FM-2 equalizes things over that altitude range. However, the F6F is significantly faster. Naturally, if no flaps are used, the FM-2 holds the edge at any altitude. However, a smart Hellcat pilot will dump flaps and give the FM-2 all it can handle.

I love the FM2. for quick action defending a base or cv I pick the FM2 because sad to say, once the wheels are up its a full speed lol. so you might as well start turning.....

Arent you a little young for that??
Oh. And you should be practicing your HMk1 skills instead of those Kitties. You still got easy 10 kills to land..... :D

I thought you could drink beer at ten yrs old in Germany Schatzi, or am i just a dumb American??? :D :D

In Germany you can *drink* beer at any age (like in US btw ;)). You can buy it at age 16 (officially! That law isnt really "enforced" in the supermarkets - "im buying it for my Dad") - 18 for high vol% drinks.
But Mr. Biggles is a Brit anyway. :)

good time down the pub with some mates never harmed anyone :D

most of the guys flying f6's or Fm2's aren't very good tho. The F6 guys tend to fly it like it is a p51 and think it is unable to turn except in the rarest of emergencies.... then they die.
the Fm2 guys try to fly it like a spit 5 and do a lot of loopy stuff.

Interesting ... even when the FM2 pops flaps, the F6F will outturn it ?

Major,
Look up Alpha81 of VF-15 Satan's Playmates. The man is lethal in a Hellcat, and a gentleman.

With both fighters having flaps fully out, the FM-2 turns a slightly smaller circle of about 405 feet in radius. At the same time, the F6F-5 turns a circle of 430 feet in radius... Slight advantage for the FM-2.
However, if at low level (below 5k), the FM-2 turns the circle much slower than the F6F, a full 5 seconds slower. This means that the F6F gets around the circle significantly faster. Advantage for the Hellcat.
If the FM-2 is on the Hellcat's six at the beginning, it stands a good chance to get a shot before the F6F can increase lead enough to get out of the gunsight. If, however, the F6F starts out close behind the FM-2, it can remain there. For a shot, he need only yo-yo and drop in. If they are on opposite sides of a circle, the F6F will gain the FM-2's six in about 4 turns.
Also noted is the fact that the F6F offers better stability at low speeds, flaps out.
In a fight between these two, how the FM-2 pilot handles the merge will determine if he survives the next 30 seconds and gets an opportunity for a shot before the F6F over-powers the Wildcat.
Once again, if no flaps are used by any pilot, the FM-2 will have the advantage.
My regards,
Widewing

A6M will win over it tho ;)
Try that for a little - Thats a fun ride.

I haven't flown the f6 much since the improvement but it was never as stable as the Fm2 I spend most of my time at 150 mph or under and rarely use more than one or two notches of flaps on the Fm2 and it seems very stable to me.
I have not really seen any f6 pilots who try to turn it at all. I am more likely to see a nik turn than an F6.
Hopefully, this thread will convince some f6 guys to try to turn the thing and not use it as a slower peee 51.
In real life navy testing the F4f and F3f were said to easily turn inside the F6 and F4u at any speed sooo... maybe the Fm2 will get "fixed" too?

Flying with full flaps out is not always the best option, espicially if your plane is under powered. The FM2 may give up some turning radius (try less flaps) to match the F6F's and gain much in terms of rate. I haven't tested it but I'm pretty sure the FM2 will outturn the F6F.

Thanks for the info WW !!

yes, but turning inside it is very different to outturning it ;)
we dont doubt the fact that it turns tighter ;)

Corsair kicks prettythang :t

Wow... for such a great turning plane....
It sure is a shame that no one uses it to turn in the MA. I think that is why so many sink carriers, because they are angry that the only planes they can fly are carrier planes and... no one can fly em. Haven't seen anyone even try to turn an F6 in the arena yet.

I've been flying the F6F quite a bit, I fly in a carrier based squad so I fly carrier planes alot, I find the F6F to be my favorite, I have had some success in turn fights with them and they are great attackers. The only thing that is weak in an F6F is me...They are great planes in my opinon, but what do I know, I'm still a noob.
-
I've loved the F6F since Air Warrior days. If they'd model its ruggedness/ battle damage accurately, it'd be almost invincible in the hands of a skilled 'Cat pilot.
