GM to relaunch Camaro at Oshawa plant, saving 2,700 jobs
Last Updated: Monday, August 21, 2006 | 12:29 PM ET
CBC News

General Motors announced Monday that it will build the redesigned Chevrolet Camaro in Oshawa, Ont., a move that will save thousands of Canadian jobs.

The new Camaro is scheduled to roll off the line in 2008, the same year that the No. 2 Oshawa car plant was slated to close.

The move will save 2,700 jobs in Oshawa.

GM officials said the preparatory work at the plant would begin immediately, with total investment totalling $740 million.

General Motors announced in November 2005 that the No. 2 plant in Oshawa would close in 2008 because of overcapacity in the market. At the time, the plant produced the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Buick LaCrosse/Allure models. Those models won't be made after 2008.

But the plant also won independent praise for the quality of the cars it built. In June, J. D. Power and Associates said GM's Oshawa No. 2 plant won its gold plant quality award for the second consecutive year, meaning it produced vehicles with the fewest defects among car and truck plants in North and South America.

The Camaro announcement comes after the Canadian Auto Workers union agreed to 2,500 early retirements to reduce the operating costs in Oshawa.

GM confirmed earlier in August that it would go ahead with a new version of the Camaro after an attention-grabbing debut of a Camaro concept car at the Detroit International Auto Show in January.

GM discontinued production of the Camaro in 2002, which left 1,000 workers at a plant in Ste-Therese, Que., out of work.

Muscle car field getting more crowded

GM, which sold almost five million Camaros from 1967 until it pulled the model, has become only the latest in a string of North American automakers to relaunch a classic muscle car.

Ford announced two weeks earlier that it would restart production of the Ford Shelby GT, a high-powered version of its Mustang.

And DaimlerChrysler announced in July it would relaunch the Dodge Challenger in 2008.

GM hopes to sell about 100,000 Camaros a year. It said its new version will be more fuel-efficient than the 1960s version.

General Motors is hoping to turn around a steady erosion of market share that has seen North American consumers increasingly turning to Japanese brands like Toyota and Honda.

GM lost $8.6 billion US in 2005 but has since embarked on an extensive restructuring and cost-cutting campaign that has included offering buyouts worth up to $140,000 US to thousands of its workers.

The concept camaro is pretty nice...reminds me a little bit of an older charger. (pic available from url above)

That's one ugly car.  I hope it is not representative of the final production unit.

It's fairly close. It looks better in person, but I'm not thrilled. There were a couple of real nice concept drawings, but GM wouldn't use them, a kid drew them for a magazine, so I guess they wouldn't pay for them.

I will say that some of the drawings were a lot worse.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I didnt think it was ugly. Not the most beautiful car I have ever seen, but not ugly either imo.

As usual, some will like it, some wont. :)

It looks okay.

I'm betting that the interior will be CHEAP and begin to rattle within three years.

But I did like the original Camaro.  I like the new Mustang, and I like what I have seen of the new Dodge Challenger.  After Ford and Dodge showed what htye could do for an update to an old model, you think GM could have followed suit.

This Camaro looks too much like some twisted offshoot from Cadillac.  It just does not remind me of the original Camaro.

Three years?  You are pretty generous.  I test drove a brand new Corvette, and it was already squeaking.  I would not give it 6 months before it is rattling.

God i hope they do not put cheap plastic facades around the dashboard like what they did to Chrysler 300 and Charger

Well....it does have the long hood and short rear deck, so in a very vague way it kinda sorta resembles the original camaro.....sorta. :D

Well,...in that incredibly limited context, I have to say you are right.

However, in that same context, you could call a "Geo Storm" a Camaro. :)

Yes, it was very limited but I would not call a Geo Storm a Camaro. Might be able to classify it as a pony car though since pony cars were defined by the long hoods and short rear decks.

Hehe, I was just asserting I think the Geo Storm has as much in common with the original Camaro, as the one described to be the new Camaro.

the new Camaro uses a chassis from a australian GM car, GM's CEO said it was "utilising our resources" or something.

instead of building something for the 21 century, they are trying to relive the past days of glory.

GM's CEO said they were going try to hold on to market share and just go quarter to quarter, how innovative and forward thinking, no wonder they and ford are closing plants. he also said they were "into styling" as a way to sell cars.

Well at least GM stayed true to the Camero's roots.

I agree that GM missed the mark on the whole 'retro' thing.

Ideally.. they shuuda just tooled up an built the '69 SS and Z-28 with today's tech under the shape.

THAT would have been more than fine ;)

I've had good luck with my Chevy trucks interiors (and the rest of it). Really good about no rattles and squeaks. Cant say the same for the one and only Dodge truck I will ever own. They were consistant though. It was a piece of crap top to botton, inside and out.

I dunno. I kinda like it

It reminds me more of the original then the 70's and 80's versions

I had a 70 1/2 RS

Only mine was Red.

Man I miss that car.
Scared the crap out of the wife the first and only time she drove it.
Stepped on the pedal. got plastered to the backof the seat fro the acceleration. Drove exactly 1 block then pulled over and said "Ok I've had enough" LOL

I used to love to come to a light and people would try to race.
I particularly loved the  Dachshund 280Zzzzz's

I remembber one time comming off a light. Now I had a heavy foot back then but I was by no means flooring it and all of a sudden I hear the winding of someone going through gears. I look over and see one of these
Dachshund 280Zzzzz's going through gears like mad racing me. I laughed cause I wasnt even trying to race him and only then even noticed he was there. My buddy was like "I think hes trying to race you"
I said to my buddy. "Watch this" looked over at the driver of the 280zzzzz, Smiled. Waved Bye bye and punched it. and looked into the rearview as he got smaller and smaller as the distance between us increaced.

We Laughed our arses off and my buddy said "Aint no subsitute for cubic inches"

Man I miss that car

Just got it fixed up just the way I wanted and some dork in a Grand AM rear ended me at a traffic light.

::sigh::

I have been pleasantly suprised by my 2001 Dodge Ram. It has 130,000 miles and no squeaks or rattles. Since I fixed the wiring chewed by mice, it has run perfectly.

My dad has a Ram as does my best friend and his dad. They havent had any trouble with theirs. My was a $36k lemon that fell apart just after 36k  miles. I could almost live with that part. Its was the treatment I got from the people at Dodge. They almost held back their laughter before telling me to **** myself.
