This question is directed to those of you who've subscribed to Aces High in the last 3 - 6 months. It seems there's been a huge influx of new players lately. I'm curious as to where to first learned about the game, why you subscribed and what your likes/dislikes may be.
Please...let's keep this on topic.
-
I subscribed in April. Used to fly AW back in the late 80's when it was on Genie. I can't remember where I first heard about AH2, but it was quite some time ago. The reason I finally subscribed? I now have more time on my hands on weekends. Dislikes? Mostly the moronic, posturing babble in-game. Some of it's entertaining but it get's old. I'm pretty sure it probably changes the minds of some would-be subscribers. That's okay for the cartoon heroes that think newbs are a sub-human species. It's not okay for Hi-Tech since this is supposed to be a profitable venture that attracts new customers.

Because the Warbirds community had all the tact of your average pack of rabid yaks....and Airwarrior had long since stopped having any meaningful flight model updates.
free beta helped too as did flat rate pricing 8)
-
I singed up because at that time, tracers looked cool, i loved the sun reflections, 6DOF in cockpit, and MOST importantly updates and new addditions were released almost on weekly basis.
Oh yea and flat pricing rocked.!

I've been infatuated with WWII aircraft since I was old enough to know what an airplane was. I went through a period (okay a decade) where my statement was 'I use my computer for work and to socialize I use my gaming systems to play games'. About 2 months ago by chance I see an ad on the military channel about this game and I'm intrigued because the graphics looked great and it was well presented. I came to the site, read the boards, and for the most part it looked like a good community (a few pot stirring troublemakers aside). Downloaded the game and played offline for a while and became addicted. Got a couple of offers to join squads based on my presentation on the boards and got an invite to the 332nd Mongrels. Flew a sqad night with them and I was hooked!! Whipped out my Visa, signed up, and a week or so later was voted in.
I've played PS2, XBOX, XBox 360, Game Cube, and all of the earlier versions of console games, but I'm in for the long haul now (to the point that I gave the kids my xbox and ps2). This, to me, is more fun and more challenging than any game I've ever played in my life. And the community be it rook, bish, or knight, keeps me interested and entertained constantly.
Not to mention that my squad fits my personality to a T.
My name's Barry and I'm an AHoholic ;)

I played 2 years ago for a while until they updated the game and my comp couldnt handle it.....jonesed for the gaem for 2 years, bought a new comp and Im back... Ive always been intrigued with WW2 air combat, this is the greatest thing since sliced bread for me :D I play becasue its F U N

I was doing some geneology research on a family member and accidentally came across the AH2 site. Usually I would just ignore the wrong threads but this one caught my attention. Since I used to fly the WWII combat sims (Microsoft Combat Series) and seriously collect WWII aviation art, I stuck around and watched the topics HTC site and downloaded the game. After a month or so of playing around off-line, I signed up.
So, after a moth or so of actually being a paying subscriber, I would have to say so far so good. I cant fly as much as I'd like to but the people I've seen in the MA are pretty decent. Then again, I don't tune into ch 200.:D
AH2 gets my vote! Keep up the good work!:aok

Well, I saw it on a comercial on the Military Channel (Yes, I know most of you have seen it too) and I said to myself "Im gonna get this game!" But when I saw there was a monthly fee, I thought I was screwed, because im too young to have a credit card, and since tomorrow is my birthday, i will only then be old enough to get a job to pay for this, so I was relying on my parents. And they never pay for anything monthly other than rent. But, I managed to get a wager out of them to get the money, and now my dream has come true!!!

1999... I was happily trying to play through Falcon4's multiplayer bugs when one of my team mates HEATER mentioned this.
It took me a week to be able to take off from A1. 7 years later... I still occasionaly crash on landing. Don't laugh... Skuzzy is worse at this than I am :)
-
Thats one interesting thing about my experience:
I have crashed on take-off, I have crashed when I selected one engine and spun, I have crashed into friendly planes, I have crashed into enemy planes, I have augered and I have stalled, but I have never, not even on my first try, crashed on landing! w00t me!
-
because, like a crack dealer, they gave me the first hit free!!
-
I guess I'm the only one here who didn't see the commercial on the military channel. A friend of mine at work told me about it, and since I've always liked flight sims I thought I would check it out. This is by far the most aggrivating game I have ever played. It's also the first game in years that I've found that can hold my interest for more than an hour or two.
-
I blame it all on Schutt :D

Two years ago, I was watching Flayd play AH at his place. He offered a few chances for me to play, and I ended up using up his perks dying in Tempests before I grasped what the hell I was doing!

Because Chicks dig fighter pilots!!!!!!!:aok

The voices in my head told me to do so

Love military aircraft, love flight sims. Saw the add, down loaded the game. Played offline on my laptop at lunch, at work (with a mouse), for a couple of months. Last December the wife and I thought it was time to buy a decent PC (Christmas present). Started my free trial in late December and signed up in January. A couple of weeks into flying, I got an invite from 71 Squadron. Love this game. Although trying to get to sleep after playing isn't easy.

I always loved the B-17 had poorly built models of her when I was a teenager, Played Dam Busters on the C64 as a young kid, Played numerous flight sims on the Atari ST and Amiga, I can even remember my brother and his mates talking about this online flight sim they wanted to play but it was too much (warbirds...?)
And a A few years ago I was looking for a multiplayer game online and I stumbled on AH I played the two week trial as GSX1100. But never got into it.
Came back last year as mussie, and had a ball, but the interest was starting to wain after about two months of MA kill die die die die kill die die die die, Then I signed up with the Nighthawks and stated playing FSO's.
My interest peaked with FSO and the MA just became a training ground but with work and the fact that FSO's conflict with family life (11pm Friday in the USA is midday Saturday over here). I stopped playing for a number of tours.
I still find the MA boring except when my squadies are on and we work togeather. I just whish their where pacific time FSO's for chumps like me.
So I guess the reason I signed up was the fact that I like WWII aircraft. But the reason why I stay is my squad and special events.
A big to the JG44 Members new and old.....
And a Big to the CM team for all their work

Dec, 2005
Sitting in office doing idle Luftwaffe searches. Stumbled across JG44 website.
Hmmmm,whats this.....?
A virtual squad? A link to the sim? I'll check it out.
Hooked immedietly. Cut teeth with VF 15 Satan's Playmates before grabbing the only other LW fan in the group and starting our own gig. Never had more fun playing a game. My squad, my friends and the teamwork and comraderie within our group keeps me here more than anything.
Immersion is in the hands of the pilots. We all play for different reasons, and all have our gripes about this and that. Find a group you really love to fly with and nothing else really matters, to me that is. No tighter groups existed than those of fighter squadrons. Keep the focus on the team, the squad, and not ourselves. That's what works for us. Love this game!

I had been playing world war 2 online for some time. Before they tried to play god (to hard to explain for those that have yet to play it) it was a good game. The ground game is very advanced.
However I only like to fly and with the map being huge in ww2ol I didn't like flying around for an hour only to not find any EA and have to rtb. AH2 really fits the bill for me. Also because you usually have multiple engagments per sortie in AH2, you learn and progress much faster.
The plane set is very small in ww2ol. I like not knowing what I'm going to meet in the air in AH2.. in ww2ol if your germany you will fight spit, hurri, hawk, d520, p38... but almost never at the same time being that you will be fighting over french or british occupied territory (each having their own planes). The allies will be fighting 109, 110, 190 hehe. It takes them around 2 years to add another plane.
I love the fact that ah2 is so kind on the system requirements. In ww2ol to fly without any system lag.. you need 2 gigs of ram.
Last and most important.. AH2's community is awesome.
Aces High is the best Air Sim IMO.

a few years ago a guy came into where i was working and we started talking about airplanes. he told me about this game. so i checked it out and i was hooked.

I flew Warbirds way back when. It was one of the better times I've had and I got to meet and fly with some great people. That started to go south when Wild Bill took over, then really tanked when they moved the company to North Carolina and most of the talent left. So I flew the beta of Aces High for a while, then Falcon 4.
Then I upgraded to Windows 2000 and my CH analog setup ceased to be programmable. So it was several online level grind games with my father (Anarchy Online, Ultima Online, Anarchy Online:Shadowlands, Guild Wars) to keep me off the streets. The flying bug was always around, but it bit hard at the end of last year. Getting outsourced provided the funds for a new USB CH setup, removing the technical obstacle.
The Warbirds community appeared to be on its last breath, so I popped in to see if there was life in these forums. Woohoo! Was there ever! Still haven't run across any former squaddies (if any Royal Knights read this, please PM me, it's been a while), but I did fall in with a good bunch of sticks. It's still fun after 6 months, and if work didn't interfere so much I'd be flying 4+ hours a day.
People give Dale and crew a lot of crap, but their reputation had a lot to do with me coming back to AH. They have put a lot into AH, and it's good to see it succeed. He is fortunate in that he gets paid to do something that he would do as a hobby. We should all be so lucky.

Thanks! Im hoping to land two kills for my B-day in a 109E. I would have done it three times last night, but since im on my dads crappy comp, I always got discoed on the second kill. It sucked because just as the 20mms pierced the fuselage from d-200, and I new it was a kill, the comp crashed. And one was an F-4U1C too!!! Whaaaaahhhhh.... :cry
-
sounds like either you got a dodgy texture file? a currupt skin file? a currupt hitsprite file?
try reinstalling AH? maybe just your Dad's PC sucks?
happy birhday anyhow, may you have many more .

Tripped over the web site some 4 years ago now. Just re-upped from a two year break (built a new house, had a couple kids).
My pals and I were looking for a better flight sim at the time we found this. Still remember the first few flights. We were typical noobs, didn't read anything just figured out how to get on the runway and started the throttle. Still remember I was taking off just as the out of control P51 of RunnGunn came tumbling down on the runway infront of me. In my attempt to get out of his way I nosed my plane into the gound still on the pavement. Eventually we upped B26s and bombed the runway of an enemy field.
Was pretty surprised how easy it was to pick the game up again after such a long break. I think I'll stick around for a bit. That's why I subscribed.

I subscibed to meet Hot Chicks!
Naw, I was introduced to AW by my brother, and was addicted after a few kills. I moved away to the caribbean and lived without cable or intrnet for some time. Seeing the need for communication with the real world, I bought a MAC laptop. Started playing warbirds among other sims, bounced around for awhile, here and there. Decided that AH was where it was at and never left.
Coming from warbirds I never agreed with the energy model here, but whatever, im just trying to have me some fun fights.
-
i started playing because it looked like a lot of fun.looks even better than the microsoft combat simulator.

As a former Mac only guy, I used to fly AW on GEnie, then AOL and when that avenue was closed, turned to Warbirds. But the community just wasn’t the same--more of a big city feel than small town I'd come to love. Eventually flying online was OBE so I quit flying.
Then back in June, some of the former MacAW group were discussing flying here which got me thinking about the fun we used to have so I just went out and subscribed the same day I d/l’d the front end.
So, I guess the long and the short of it is I just missed the camaraderie—oh, and the sheep here are docile and easily distracted. ;)

Great to cya back Mags. Who knows, perhaps Killer will wonder in some day :D
-
I got a new monitor, and AH2 finally started supporting 1920x1200 res. (And my X45 'subscription' was about to run out forcing me to get an x52 for $80 off of $120)

A thrill has been recorded.
I'm sure HTC will spank him soundly if he does.

I can play ah for hours and spend only few megabytes of traffic.
Yes internet is expensive here
