Quite a few folks build models here, also. Frank3 used to post pictures of his progress in the HTH forums, but he stopped a while back. Maybe he'll pop in and let us know what his current project is.

My time is limited, I wish I had more. I've got 1 90% done 24th scale Airfix 109E waiting for final paint and decals. I've got a mostly-done B17G (48th scale) that I'm foiling -- this is taking a long time. I've got a couple half-done 72nd birds that are sitting in boxes, a helo that I don't have decals for, and a ship that's basically done but looks like crap because of the display base and the color of paints I used on it.

Both are a freakin' ways from me. Even when I lived not too far from DU, both were still freakin' out in the boonies.

I've been to both. The one out in Aurora, I think, is a little more crowded, layout wise. They seem to both have the same scale model selection of aircraft, but the Aurora one having more "other" ships GVs etc, and more radio controlled stuff. To be fair it is a larger store. The other store is the one in a shopping mall type of area, and Aurora is the one way the heck out there off some big highway right?

As an aside, one of the planes I list in my "Bragging Rights" category (I only have a few in this category).

Id build more models, if only I could paint them. I have a REALLY nice looking Dauntless, but the only part of that paint that looks nice are the bombs, (Which I made gold, and they look REALLY good) so recently I have taken to the pre-fab ones, because they have moving parts! Thats one thing I hate about the expensive models: The gear never retracts.

^-- the image above was just brush painted by hand.

Painting's just part of it. Be thankful you don't have to do figures/busts. I think I'd have the ugliest one ever if I had to paint one of those!

Holy cats that a beautiful looking plane Krusty!

The one in Aurora is on Havana, it's a busy road but not quite a highway.  The one in lakewood is on Wadsworth.  They are both in kind of strip malls.

Reynolds: I used to be that way too, get some good paintbrushes, some good paints, I like Testors acrylics, and take it slow.  I'm by no means a great painter, not even a mediocre painter.  Every project is more practice and you can see that from my early ones to now.

Those ModelMaster Acryls goe on nicely if you let some of the solution evaporate first (not straight out of the bottle, mind you, put it in a tray first), but don't use them for masked parts, and don't put them on the clear pieces. I've got a mix of enamels and acrylics, and nice as those acrylics are they are a PITA at times.

How long did it take you?  I have a horrible habit of rushing and it shows.  Do you use that "clear" glue from Testor's for the windows?  I use CA for EVERYTHING and it of course fogs the clear plastic.  A little dab'll do bad more then a little dab tends to come out.

Speaking of weathering, they have weathering "paints" now.  I guess you apply then and leave on for however long you want.  When I get some free time, and a new model, I might try some, maybe some after market decals too:aok

P.S. Do you sand between each coat?  That camo looks incredibly smooth and not layered, granted it's not super close but wow.

I'll be working on a Tamiya F4U-1A pretty soon. Right now I've got the kit, the decals are on order, and I'm going to be experimenting with the Aires super-detail resin upgrades (for certain the cockpit, wheel wells, gunbay, and probably the engine) and airbrushing and weathering for the first time. Always hand-painted in "like new" status and built stock out of the box (excluding decals).

Going to be doing the bottom one. Every plane looks better with a sexy girl on the nose or tail. :D

Nirvana:

Dip your clear parts in Future. That prevents the CA vapors from fogging the clear parts. I also use it before and after decals (to ensure they have no bubbles/silvering, and to lock them in) then I do a dull coat.

The camo looks flat for the most part, but it's got one or two slightly thick areas, if you look closely. I'm still happy with it. The paints I used were ModelMaster Acryl so the paint itself is thin, even after I let some of the carrier evaporate before applying it.

Mostly it's just noticable in the areas I messed up on -- the areas I had to go over and over on to get the camo right.

What the heck is Future? I mean what chemicals is it made of? I have seen many references to it on modelling pages.

Johnson and Johnson "Future" floor wax. It's an acrylic clear that has what they commonly call a "self leveling" nature -- that is it has a low viscosity, so you won't blob one area and spread another too thin.

It works great on models because of the way it dries, and the way it refracts light. If you dip a clear part in future it often makes the plastic look thinner, but only because of the way its helping the light pass through the part.

It's an acryilic, as well, so you can put it on clear parts without fear of fogging. Once on, if the part is completely covered, CA and other glues will not fog that part.

Unfortunately they only sell it in huge-arsed bottles for floors. I'd like something half that size for modelling.

EDIT: This stuff

Thank you, they have little bottles of stuff to keep decals in place but i've never used it.  As far as i'm concerned i've never been more of a n00b in the modeling world in the 6 or so years.  Best ever paintjob was on a Big Beautiful Doll, then i\I screwed up on the nose by trying to use a paintbrush with enamels, super thick and it didn't dry for days.  I also screwed up the decals on it, rushing once again.
Title: i am doing something cool when not on internet!
Post by: Krusty on August 29, 2006, 05:31:46 PM
Those little bottles are different. Those little bottles are decal solvents. They make the decal "melt" around and bumps, shapes, panel lines, and details. I've never used those before, but I've seen models that used them. Since the decal melts into the surface it makes it look more and more "painted on".

Future is pretty low on the skills chart. You just dip parts in and let them dry with a cover (to prevent lint/dust) and viola. You use it like a clear coat (and it actually strengthens the parts, too) before and after decals and decal silvering will be gone.

It's just an extra step, but nothing you don't know how to do already. I was surprised how easy it was to use.

I was at the Testors website and was reading into painting, as i could use help there.  I also pulled out my F15E and surprisingly, it's not looking half bad for being smashed in storage for 5 months or something, there is room for serious touch up though, large gap between the cockpit and main fuselage, i'm also going to need to grab some Testors gray to match it.  Was also trying some "Weatering" with sandpaper, not too bad but I don't know how extensive i'll actually get.

You said you were foiling, i've heard it's extremely time consuming and requires a large amount of skill.  The buffing metals from Model Master looked like they would fantastic for a job like that, just rub the paint and it gets shiny.  It sounded a little labour intensive, but what isn't.  There's a lot of stuff to try, i'm thinking a Hurri Mk. 1 or a B29 for my next project, even though i'm sitting on 5 models currently.

I've been reading up on some articles about weathering techniques (mostly researching what others builders have done with F4U-1As since that's my project) and one of them is to use Testors Metalizer as a base coat of sorts, then applying acrylic over that, which then allows the paint to be literally chipped away to expose the "bare" metal underneath since the acrylics don't adhere to the metalizer, then sealing the rest with future.

Nirvana: for those metal masters paints, you need to have a 100% *perfect* finish, as any and EVERY scratch or imperfection will be amplified by the shiney metal. It takes a lot more preparation, with several coats of paint required before even putting on the metal. I've read up on it a bit, read about how others used it. I'm not ready for that, personally. The foil is taking forever. Maybe that's because I don't have time to work on it? :huh

At any rate it takes only medium skill, once you know how to put the glue on the foil and put the foil in place. Then it just takes time.

I'd shy away from using sandpaper to simulate weathering. I'd rather suggest you go the "additive" way and add paints on top to make it look like there's wear and tear. Sandpaper is good, however, for wearing down winter whitewash on LW/VVS planes.

Saxman: I tried something similar a long time ago. I put aluminum down on an area, then a flat grey (top of an F3 Phantom wing) and once all was dry, I just took a piece of scotch tape and made a loop, like I was making a lint remover, and tapped it onto the grey. It pulled up some of the matt paint and the aluminum showed through! I don't know how you'd get smaller chunks to pull up, mine were fairly large (smaller strip of tape, perhaps?)

That's for the Helldiver, right?

I think you're limited to blue paint schemes for that plane. Often I'll just use the paint schemes included with the instructions.

I prefer the Testors acrylics in the 1/4 oz glass bottles, for some reason they seem to be of better quality then the Testor's in the plastic rack type thing.  Wal Mart should have them, or if you have a hobby shop/Hobby Lobby they will have them too.  You could try to spray paint it if you cover everything that you don't want painted REALLY well, on bigger projects use spray, for detailing and such get some good quality brushes (not the 30 for $2 at Wal Mart) and take your time.

P.S.  Don't forget to mix the paint with a toothpick or brush handle before painting.
Title: i am doing something cool when not on internet!
Post by: Saxman on August 30, 2006, 11:06:12 PM
Krusty: Way I heard it described was VERY careful use of an exact-o knife or razor to chip off small bits of the "paint."

Taylor: With the Helldiver you're pretty much going to get one of two camoflage schemes:

1. The classic "tricolor" scheme, consisting of Insignia White underneath, Intermediate Blue on the sides, and Non-specular (Flat) Sea Blue on the upper surfaces.

2. Glossy Sea Blue over the whole aircraft.

The Testors Model Master paints pretty much follow the Federal Standard system, so you can be reasonably sure that their colors will be pretty close to historical.

I know for certain that with the Tamiya paints they do NOT list the FS numbers, so it'd be up to you to find a reference chart. I don't know if this is the case with all Japanese paints, tho.

Sad to report it was announced on the radio news today that Airfix are probably going into liquidation unless a buyer can be found.

A spokesman said this was due to problems with the French company that provides components and the fact that demand has plummeted over the years because today's dull, short attention span and witless youths spend too much time watching TV and playing computer games instead of being stimulatingly engaged in making model kits. (or words to that effect)

What am I going to hang from my bedroom ceiling now?  (I don't need a mirror - my wife says I've got a pimply bum).

This news was also on ARC. The forums there have some good info: They say not to jump the gun. This new issue revolves around Humbrol.

Some even speculate it's a pre-emptive attempt to prevent the Heller branch from taking the rest down with it.

Too many possibilities to tell the outcome, at the moment.

Edit: There's always Italeri, RoG, Monogram, and "those asian companies", but perhaps they are lacking the history and personal commitment that the folks at Airfix put into their product.

Some Czech company sells little 1/48 scale or 1/72nd, thinks have a diecast pilot, need painting everything.  Catch is, they cost $60-80:confused:

I quite enjoy the little engines things from tamiya though, might make a tank eventually, who knows.  Oh the prices on them went down too:D

Early F4u-1's did use salmon (or pink) primer.  It just depends on the bird, as processes manual specifys using "available primer."  Vought actually was short of zinc chromate (this explains why most -1a's are in zinc chromate) which explains why they used the primers they did for an extremely short and not long lived run of "salmon" colors in early birds...

Frank I love the details on that Dora. In-box, or after market?

Also I'm unfamiliar with that gruppe marking on the tail. Got any info?

Prolly just a personal variation of the 4th gruppe marking.

The instructions say that it's a Fw-190D-9, stationed in Bad Worishofen in 1945, however, no gruppe, geschwader, staffel or pilot is mentioned.

I used to have a small book on how to read the German aircraft markings, I'll see what the symbol and 18 stands for

Oh I could, it's part of the uber suckage collection though.  I used enamels for the nose, they were too thick and i didn't use tape so the line isn't straight, I screwed up the checkerboard, cousin busted off one of the props, the wingtip decals are peeling, it's just a real mess.  When I went back to Wal Mart to have another go they were all out (only $10).  Oh and the cockpit/canopy is all screwy.

That could be right, Im not very proud of the spinner myself.
Like Nirvana, I used enamel paints on it too (didn't have black paintbrush paint at that time)
So it turns out very thick to me aswell

Here's what you do when brush-painting enamels:

Get a bottle of airbrush thinner. This is not "brush cleaner" -- but smells like it. This just thins out the paint without damaging its ability to adhere to a surface. Take a brush full of paint, let the paint drip off the brush into a tray (one of those dimple trays), then take a small plastic dropper (called a "pipette" here) and put a drop or two of the thinner into the paint.

Then mix carefully (I use the brush itself) to get a smooth consistency. This makes the paint less blobby and less thick.

2 words of caution:

NEVER put the thinner into the paint bottle.

NEVER dip the same brush back into the bottle after mixing the thinner into the paint.

Over time this will make the paint solidify, so if you open your bottle of paint you'll find a hard rubbery blob. Use it outside the bottle but never let any get inside.

That will help the enamels lie down better on the surface of the model.

Monogram 1/48th B-17G. Apparently one of the recent moldings, with weighted tires and better detailed 50cals (over the original 70's molding)

Been a long time since I've done a Monogram kit. Ever since I put together a 1/48 Tamiya Wildcat I never looked back.

Forget some of the fit problems, they've got kick-arse details (in 48th scale) and decent prices. The Monogram 1980s mold of the F101B Voodoo has such a well detailed cockpit that no after-market kit can better it. (IMO). The fit by the intakes is terrible but the detail is great.

I say that with the note that I don't mind raised panel lines.

I did the same model Krusty, but mine was a Revell kit I believe.
Beware for the cockpit windscreen, I had a pain installing it!

But I didn't have any metalizer at that time, it looks awfull now :(

EDIT: I also hadn't got a paintbrush in those days, I painted the whole model with 2 cans of aluminium paint and a small brush!

I am horrible at building models since I lack a decent place to build them, so I buy metal models for my desk. Currently here at school I have my 190D guarding my flat panel and a Tiger tank defending my printer.

Soon to come, Max Genius, Roy Fokker and Hikaru Ichirjo's VF-1's from Macross: DYRL to assume positions to guard my book shelf :D

At home, my JU-87B-2 Stuka is en route on my TV to find any GVs in my room haha!

Beautiful plane right there Krusty, I hope you post pictures when it's done.

What is the stuff they include with the 1/4 oz. testor paints?  I thought it was thinner but it could very well be thinner.  Anyway, I tried to get it mixed together and it stayed separate like water and oil.  Enamels wok really nice though, I think I might try to finish a model tonight, too much crap laying on my desk.
Title: i am doing something cool when not on internet!
Post by: Krusty on September 05, 2006, 05:53:40 PM
Well it depends on the brand and the line of paint. Check the label. There's enamel (which you use paint thinner for -- not "brush cleaner"), and then there's acryllic, which you use acryllic-based thinner (some folks swear by Windex, some use future to thin it out).

You don't want to mix (for example) acryllic with paint thinner. They're incompatible.

If your paint is really really thick, like you dip the tip of your brush into it and a large irregular blob comes up, you only need a small amount of paint. Put that into the mixing dimple, and drip some thinner in to the same thing. Use the brush to smear the paint blob around inside the puddle of thinner. You must use your best judgement to determine if you need more thinner or not. The thicker the paint the more the ratio of thinner to paint must be.

However don't use too much thinner or there's just not enough paint to ge the job done.

Also if you use TOO much thinner you run the problem of affecting previous coats of paint (if there are any where you are painting). That doesn't happen often but it's happened for me before.

EDIT I might have misread your post. You mean in the 6-bottle packs, there's a 7th bottle that's clear, right?

If that's what you mean, I believe that is brush cleaner, and not thinner.

Paint won't hold it, go out and buy Cyranoacrylate glue if you haven't already.  It'll set in seconds so no more holding for 10 minutes so it kind of dries together.  I prefer the thick myself but I have medium, thin/medium and thin, they all have their uses I just use best judgement.  Hobby lobby sells it as Extreme Power Some places sell it as Insta-Cure, Maxi-cure, whatever.  It's basically super glue with different thicknesses, super glue usually being a thin type.

Karnak: Doesn't take a lot of effort. Next time you sit in front of the TV take a few parts and just start working idly. Same way some women knit in front of the TV, I've modeled in front of it. If you have a TV tray that's helpful, but if not just leave the box in the work room and take the x-acto and a few major parts into the TV room. Trim the pour gates, use a file on certain areas, maybe a sanding stick. Dry fit. On commercial go swap out the "cleaned" part for an "uncleaned" one.

That's actually common place. It's not that he won't finish it. It's just that he hasn't finished it "yet". Sometimes folks don't have much time and they build at a much slower pace. My B17G that I pasted pics of has taken 5 months to get where it is. That's not bragging. I just don't have *that* much free time. Plus I take the extra time to make it look as nice as I can.

Saxman, good luck! My first ever PE kit was small details (rudder pedals, instruments, bomb fins) for a Petlyakov-2. Just recently I got my first ever resin detail kit (for the B17G) and it's small -- 3 pieces -- but going to take a bit of work. For PE I suggest you Get some fine-tip needle nose pliers.

The kind without "teeth" -- you want flat grip surfaces. 2 pairs help, but not necessary. Flat surfaces to work on also help. When cutting pieces off the sprue of copper, put one hand over the top of it, as they have a tendency to shoot off like a bullet in a fireplace. The hand cups over the X-acto knife, and if the piece goes flying it hits the hand and bounces back down. (I learned this the hard way)

Should the photoetch pieces be painted at all, or left bare metal? The Aires kit is pretty short of painting instructions (read: none whatsoever).

Post by: Krusty on September 12, 2006, 01:56:51 PM
PE parts are great for detail, but unless you get a pre-painted set (they have seat belts and stuff that's pre painted) you need to paint it yourself. It's quite shiny and will stand out like a sore thumb on a model if left unpainted.

They just give you the extra detail. You still have to paint it :)

I've seen all kinds of great looking models that were spray painted, brush painted, airbrushed. Each has its own techniques to help you master the way your model turns out.

You do know they make spray paints especially for models, right? They are aerosol cans with model paint (enamel) inside. They lay an even coat of paint down but don't require the clean-up that airbrushes do.

They are, however, "blanket" coats, you can't do any special designs unless you carefully mask off the areas you need before you apply the paint.

I've always been of the impression that if you take the time and effort to put a model together, even if you think it looks bad, it's worth that time and effort to keep it. I'd never put firecrackers in my models, or shoot them with BB guns or any of the other stories I've heard some folks do.

My time is important (even as a kid it was, too! I had so many things to do, if I did any 1 thing it had to be worth it), so I wouldn't create something just to destroy it. Legos were another matter, but models? Never!

Main wings are just hooked on, not glued (I'm not going to cement them, I want to be able to transport it in the future).

Krusty,

very nice!  If you want to make it look less chromey and more of that burnished aluminum look, I found that you can take some toothpaste and water it down a bit and rub it lightly on the paint (carefully with your finger or a qtip) to take a little of the paint's gloss off.  rub the same direction for all pieces and try it on a hidden area first to get the desired effect.

My favorite part of doing models was weathering them, battle damage, and the dioramas.  I had some awesome pieces but gave them away to neighborhood kids when I moved.

Did you know that you can flat down gloss paint with talc? That's what they use at the factory to flatten paints.

For smoke streaks from guns, engines etc., you need to thin out flat black, maybe a little flat grey mixed in.. thin it to translucent... test it on a piece of scrap plastic first... use a 000 or 00 brush, if it's too dark, blot with a q-tip.

Be careful not to loosen the previous coat of paint by over-brushing too much.

Battle damage such as bullet holes can be done with a heated sewing needle, but don't overheat it as the plastic will mush up around the hole...  you can simulate the smoke damage from a hole by putting a drop of the abovementioned thinned paint on the hole and then blowing it in the direction of the windstream with your breath.

Man it's been a long time since I built models, can't believe I remember this stuff.  I don't think my wife would be very accommodating of two hobbies, or I might take it up again.

Here's a picture of my biggest model to date (had to sell it earlier this year) :( :cry  :cry

makeing or remakeing old cars and building military modes?

man u should just go with military models cause u can work on cars more then models cause u can work on the military model for a bit but u can work on cars as long as u want! models r easier cause u can spend more time with people because once u put some pieces on together then u need to put the main piece u worked with onto the main pieces or someting, u should let that piece dry first then work on it again!

Not sure if it's already mentioned, but to get some nice weathered look, there's a series of easy things you can do;

Dry-brushing:
Paint the part in the colour you want first. After it has dried, dip your brush in aluminum colour (in this case) just abit, don't dip it all in.
Now carefully brush the part (engine in this case) to get this look:

okay, okay! that is nice but before i glue the propellers back o how do i paint the swirl on the center thing?
Title: i am doing something cool when not on internet!
Post by: nirvana on September 23, 2006, 04:52:30 PM
Paint the main colour of the prop spinner and let it dry for at least 2 or 3 hours if not more.

Then to paint the swirl on the spinner, take some blue painters tape or masking tape, wrap it around the spinner and using an x-acto knife cut out your pattern.

Peel off the tape where the pattern is and paint that.

Kinda hard to understand but good luck.

I've got the cockpit tub on my Corsair mostly painted. Right now I'm waiting on replacements for the pilot's seat, rear bulkhead, and a part to fix to the front of the flight stick (the former two were broken, the third was missing). Once they come in and I get them painted I'll post some pics.

One thing I'm doing, in addition to dry-brushing aluminum for wear, is giving a light wash of thinned Polyscale "Dirt" on the cockpit floor. This adds to the used appearance of the cockpit, and helps tone down the color.

Nicely done model Taylor, better then 95% of mine.  A few thing i'd say though, paint the model before putting on the canopy or use tape to cover it.  Also use painting tape to tighten up those lines.

ow ya with my paint it was odd because i did barker first then i thought i should have done lighter first so i did a few coats of the light paint then i went back to darker paint and it was diferrent slightly, i contiued with the odd paint then the next day i thought am i sure this is sea blue i looked and it wasn't it was teal or something like that then i looked at this black looking paint and it was sea blue then i said "darn it!" then i had to do all the coas on top all over again!

The bomb cart comes with the kit. It's a B17, by the way. They include a type of tow tractor with the B24 kit, I've heard. I've never built that one. I barely have room for this one.

Most of my kits are in 1/72nd.

I'm not so good at painting crew, but I've got 5 members that came with the kit. Eventually I'll paint them and put them around the kit like a diorama.

Here we go, first look at my F4U-1A.

For some reason the first couple pics came out sort of red. I guess the lighting wasn't quite right and the flash didn't take.

Cockpit floor, stick, rudder and other details in place.

Right side panel. No assembly other than the instrument cluster, mostly just painting detail.

Left side panel. More construction here, mainly on the throttle quadrant. I'm not happy with the way the wires between the quadrant and the bulkhead came out. A big problem I had with Aires is that some parts which PROBABLY should have been seperate assemblies were all built in to one piece (like, the consoles I think should have been SEPERATE from the side walls).

The aft bulkhead, with seat attached.

Looking aft at the completed cockpit tub.

Looking forward. The pic of the unattached forward bulkhead didn't come out.

Looking into the tub from the left. The view from the other angle didn't come out, either.

The cockpit overall was painted Yellow Zinc Chromate, with the side bulkheads painted interior green above the control consoles (per color details I found on another site). All consoles were painted interior black. The interior was then drybrushed with aluminum to bring out details and for weathering. A light wash of Polyscale "Dirt" was then applied for more detail and to dirty up the interior.

At some point one of the lap belts for the flight harness disappeared. Couldn't find it, so installed the seat as is. I'll just say it dropped down off the seat like what happens all the time in my car.

The seat required a little surgery, as trying to remove the ejector posts resulted with the ENTIRE seat bottom tearing out. The replacement aft bulkhead sent by Aires was, unfortunately, for the BIRDCAGE model (if you remember, I mentioned that the mounting posts for the pilot's seat broke. They did on the NEW bulkhead while I was cleaning it up, but I was able to fabricate replacements from some copper wire). This was fixed by cutting off the top portions above the seat off both the replacement and original bulkhead and swapping them.

Just kidding. I found them on the web.
I did build this exact Monogram model though, and did a diorama much like it.  Not quite as good though.

Saxman, that cockpit is fantastic.

(edit)
Also these pics are from Sheperd Paine, apparently he is a diorama modeler of legendary skill.

Scotty, if you're going to claim pictures of a model are yours, here's a tip: Don't use pictures of a famous diorama, that many folks will recognize on sight :)

Doing that particular model (which has been made since 1975, btw), that was  how I learned to use a Dremel tool.

Dremel is your friend with modelling, it does a great job sanding down parts etc

Actually I haven't got to use the sanding wheel too often. For me the dremel is best for the cutting discs. It makes it effortless to chop parts off. I don't have a small saw, so normally I'd be forced to score the part over and over and over with a knife on both sides of the plastic. With the dremel it's muuuuuuch better.

I also have used the little metal grinding bit several times. I don't know what it's called.

Despite the hijacking this thread was a nice place to share model pics. I don't really care for all the arguing, but I like the thread itself. Please keep to the main subject if possible.

Just a request

Frank was asking me to post a pic or two of my current projects. I've got 3 partially completed ones that I want to finish. The 109 is 90% done (only  needs paint and decals, bascially).

1/24th Airfix 109E
(http://www.arcforums.com/forums/uploads/post-14-1104699391.jpg)

72nd Ju86D-1 (needs gear, guns, misc.), has since been painted overall lichtblau, but those images are on my PC at home (this I got off the 'Net).

Roden 72nd He111E-1 (lots of work done, still some to do!)

My goal is to work on finishing all of these. They all require final paint jobs, and the 2 smaller ones still have a few problems to work out before they can be displayed.

Hobby lobby had models 30% off this week, you guys missied out.  I got an engine for half off somehow.  I was expecting $60 ended up as $30.

Here's a tip...

Hobby Lobby has this coupon, and they've run it a LOT in the past 2-3 years straight. When you get the coupon (you can even print it off the internet, if you find it, they'll accept it!) you get 50% off all model kits.

I'm not lying. E-mails used to go around the IPMS mailing list I used to be on, letting folks know where to find it. I don't know if they do this *every*where, but I'd guess they would do it in more than 1 city.

I don't like painting but I like them to take a tad bit of time so I usually get the 1/6th engine models.  The snap tites are booooring and as I already stated, I don't like painting.  I'll look for that though, cheap presents for my cousins when they come around.
