Title: AR234 rear view
Post by: mamba2 on August 28, 2006, 03:21:45 PM
In the right-hand side of the cockpit, there is a scope that lets you see behind u, i was thinking that we could be able to look into it. (NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE BOMBING SCOPE)

With external view you really don't need to periscope for rear view. However it was also used as 'glide-bomb'  would be be of real use in AH. I and others have asked for years but so far HTC reply has been that it creates problems that may not be worth it.

When operated as a bomber, the Ar-234 could be used in high-altitude horizontal attacks, shallow dive attacks, or low-level horizontal attacks.

For high-altitude horizontal attacks, the pilot had to double as the bombardier, and did so with the help of a sophisticated Patin PDS-11 3-axis autopilot. The pilot would fly to within about 30 kilometers of the target, engage the autopilot, swivel the control column out of his way to the right, and then lean over and sight the target through the Lotfe 7K bombsight. The bombsight was linked to the autopilot. As long as the pilot held the target in the crosshairs, the autopilot would change the aircraft's heading accordingly, directing the aircraft to the correct release point and released the bombs at the correct moment according to their ballistic properties.

For shallow dive attacks (glide bombing) the PV1B periscope sight was used. This was tied to the BZA computer. It was only necessary to keep the cross hairs on target. The pilot would drop from about 5,000 meters to under 1,500 meters, and when directed by the BZA computer, manually release the bombs. When not in use the PV1B periscope swung around to point rearwards to give the pilot some rear vision which was limited otherwise.

For low-level horizontal attacks, used only when the target was obscured, the pilot simply flew low and level and dropped the bombs when it seemed appropriate. Results were typically poor with this method.

Better method...
Go to the bombsite... place your mouse cursor at the center of the crosshair.  Then go back to pilot view and go external... Mouse will be at the centerpoint... manuver mouse onto  bad guy... badguy go boom.

Tried and true.  I have killed lots of 262's this way.
