TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called on U.S. President George W. Bush to participate in a "direct television debate with us," so Iran can voice its point of view on how to end world predicaments.
"But the condition is that there can be no censorship, especially for the American nation," he said Tuesday.
The White House called the offer to debate Bush a "diversion" from international concerns over Iran's nuclear program, Reuters reported.
During during a news conference in Tehran, Ahmadinejad also blamed "special concessions" granted to the United States and Britain as "the root cause of all the problems in the world."
"At the Security Council, where they have to protect security, they enjoy the veto right. If anybody confronts them, there is no place to take complaints to."
His comments came two days before a deadline set by a U.N. Security Council resolution for the Islamic republic to suspend uranium enrichment or face possible sanctions.
Although he did not directly address the U.N. deadline, Ahmadinejad said '"nobody can prevent" Iran from its right to a "peaceful, nuclear program."
"I think the time has passed to speak of the Security Council and the tools they can use to force a country to do certain things," he said.
Ahmadinejad said he would reject any suspension of enrichment, even if requested by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan during an upcoming visit to Iran. (Full story)
Iran has until Thursday to agree to halt the enrichment program, which Tehran maintains is part of a civilian nuclear program to generate power.
Western nations accuse Iran of seeking to master technology to produce nuclear weapons.
The U.N. Security Council resolution, approved on July 31, would pave the way for the Tehran regime -- if it complies -- to receive financial incentives.
The United States has also held out the possibility of resuming direct contacts with Iran, more than 25 years after the two countries broke off diplomatic relations.
Last week, Tehran offered to resume negotiations about its nuclear program but did agree to halt uranium enrichment before any talks take place. (Full story)
If the Iranians do not accept the U.N.'s incentives offer by Thursday, the Security Council will discuss a resolution proposing economic sanctions on Iran.
While such a move is backed by three of the council's permanent members -- the United States, Britain and France -- the two others, Russia and China, have been cool to the idea and could use their veto to block a sanctions resolution.
Meanwhile, a senior Iranian official on Tuesday invited Western companies to bid for tenders to build nuclear plants, The Associated Press reported from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
"We have had ... another 21 thousand megawatts of nuclear power plants approved by the parliament that will be built in the next 20 years," Seyed Ala'addin Barojerdi, chairman of Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Affairs Commission, was quoted as saying.
"(The) international tenders for building of two of these nuclear power plants have been so far presented and we would be willing to see the Western companies participate in these projects," he said.
Western nations have been closing watching developments in Iran's nuclear program for signs of compliance. In recent days, Tehran has made public displays of new technologies and facilities.
On Sunday, state television reported that Iran test fired a long-range, radar-evading missile from a submarine in the Gulf as part of war games that began earlier this month. (Full story)
Some analysts interpreted the test and war games as thinly veiled threats that Iran could disrupt vital oil shipping lanes if pushed by an escalation in the nuclear dispute, according to Reuters.
A day earlier, Ahmadinejad officially opened a heavy-water production plant that he said would serve medical, agricultural and scientific needs. (Full story)
Video broadcast on Iranian television showed the president touring the plant in the central Iran city of Arak along with Gholamreza Aghazadeh, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization.
Heavy water is used in preparing uranium for nuclear weapons, but it is also useful for medical purposes, such as nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, according to Reuters.
"No one can deprive a nation of its rights based on its capabilities," the agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in his speech to inaugurate the project.

And Iran won't censor the parts where Amenamenajahib gets his butt kicked. Right. (http://www.smileyhut.com/light_blue/rolleyes.gif)
-
Iran must not be allowed to develope nuclear weapons. And if it does, then the United States must take the steps necessary to defend itself before a nuclear attack against it can be carried out. There can be no depending on the threat of a retaliatory strike to provide national security. The tactic of mutually assured destruction is not applicable to a nation that is dedicated to a religious principle that promotes individual suicide as a accepted form of attack.

I think that in today's world, it is increasingly hard to 'censor' stuff like this because it will be posted on the internet for all to view.

I agree somewhat though the Internet is being censored. Google is aiding China in this.

over 60% of the CNN websight visitors polled believe the Iranian president would "win" in a debate with GWB on "world issues".
That just goes to show you how far left of center the CNN clientel has become these past dozen years. A nutjob hitler wannabe from Iran would beat a US president in a debate on world affairs. Its a pathetic statement of the elitists that make CNN their default homepage.

China and Iran can easily censor everything. For example, Iran just went around the roof tops of it's capital, and wripped all the satelites for TV out.

I recall Bush not failing miserably against Gore during the debates, that is to say that Gore is 90% more intelligent than Bush yet only got about a 15-20% slam factor over Bush during the debates. Bush easily held his own against John squealing Kerry (who is only about 40% more intelligent than Bush).
I cant imagine (nor would I want) any american president ever talking face to face with the impish little iranian hitler fanboi. Those nutjobs are setting themselves up for one hell of a flash/banging.

How's Amadirkadirkamuhammedjihad's english? Anybody heard him speak?
-
Didnt one of the Iranian religious leaders called for fatwa on not using Nuke weapons because it is UN-islamic?
If that's true then it's safe to say Iran is no threat at all
-
yeah and some nutjob religious leader in Pakistan gave OBL a cap of ten million americans to be killed in nuclear attacks against the US. No word on any penalty for going over the ten million limit
Islam had better get its house in order or there will be one very bad day coming up for all of us on earth.
-
i would love to see this on TV!
so many question, if, when, why, what,
it could all be discussed live hehe

I think Hitler would also have wone a debate with Bush. :)

so who is stopping this guy from saying whatever he wants right now? He could easily get e4nterviews with sympathetic anchors for some of the lefty stations like msnbc or cnn and it would not be censored. I bet even Fox would put him on and let him air his views.
How would a debate get his views across any better?
Why not just get the smartest guy in his country that represents his view go up against the smartest guy in our country that represents our view?
or... why not just publish or put out on the internet his views?

that's got nothing to do with what I'm saying...
anyone with a computer can get some p2p software and find anything they want...vid clips...sound bites...etc. it's all out there...and not much anyone can do for someone who is intent on finding it.
even if that failed...one can also go onto undernet or any of the other IRC orgs and get it/anything there. On IRC there is a way to simply connect directly for a download of anything you want to get from a willing person who will share (which is just about everyone)
It was not long ago I used p2p to get a 50meg plus file of the US using 'whiskey p' in Falluja and its aftermath...a very sobering view (white phosphorous is an outlawed substance that reacts to skin and air...but doesn't burn clothes etc....absolutely horrific...I can see why it's illegal) It is as graphic as anything I've ever seen...people's skin 'melting' off their bodies...dead animals etc...plus the satellite image of Falluja the day after the use of this substance (in contrast to the pic of Falluja before) US gov shut down the original site that had this clip...but too late...now it's 'out there' for anyone who wants to see it, along with the interview of the US servicemen who witnessed and cofirmed the use of whiskey p
I can't see any way of controlling what is being 'uploaded' to internet sources...I don't think it should be controlled anyway

Why would Bush even think about debating this guy? It would be the "Hannity debate style" of "let me harrangue and shout so you can't get in a word edgwise" coupled with ridicule. I suspect he would begin by denying the Holocaust and it would get worse from there. While I doubt very much that Bush could win a debate on even terms, there is simply no reason for him to subject himself to this crap.

(white phosphorous is an outlawed substance that reacts to skin and air...but doesn't burn clothes etc....absolutely horrific...I can see why it's illegal)
Washington is not a signatory to an international treaty restricting the use of the substance. So it's not 'illegal' for the US to use WP. It can be used as an effective immediate smokescreen as well as marking targets to be engaged.

I agree, until they have a responsible regim should be stoped from builing nukes
the UN is useles, ineficent divided , infested with China/ Russia"s vetto and they will never stop Iran from building nuke cuz are economic partners.
Like many others i didn't like Bush invasion in Iraq until last month. Imagine what would have hapened with Israel in Iran could pass its troops through Iraq to Syria to Israel, Maybe Iranians would have done it without american presence in Iraq. But now are isolated , at the west ,look at the map below, Many still criticize Bush, but the future will tell if he was right or not,

Personally, I don't see the point of such a debate. There is no common language here at all, and, accordingly, there will be no winning and losing, merely two compeltely different animals trying to re-arrange each other's DNA.
It may go something like this:
Moderator: Mr. Bush, where do you stand on the question of Israeli military activity in Lebanon?
Bush: I stand in support of the Israeli right to protect the soveriegnty of their nation, as I would stand for the support of any nation to do so, in the face of aggressive incursion. Although this conflict has been fraught with unfortunate military actions, on both sides, I do believe, in essence, that the Israelis did not start this process as the aggressors.
Moderator: Mr. Ahmadinejad?
Ahmadinejad: The Zionist conspiracy to subjugate the Muslim world must be stopped at any cost. To long have we stood idle as the dark forces of the Zionist regime walked the Earth among us. Allah be praised, we will stand against their fascist nation, side by side, muslim by muslim, and, Allah be praised, wipe every last one of them from the collective memory of our world. Allah be praised.
Moderator: How do you see this situation being peacefully resolved?
Bush: An enduring cease-fire, if held, can lead to negotiations and, eventually, given a less-subective international peace-keeping presence, some semblence of order can be maintained while we broach the subject of prisoner exchanges.
Ahmadinejad: Peace will be accomplished only when the Zionist plague is finally wiped clean from the sands of the middle east. Islam can and will prosper in the face of the Jewish cancer, and, god willing, will then be free to blanket the Earth unhindered and unimpeded. Death to the infidels! Allah be praised.
There may be variations, with certain sentiments hidden rather than overt, but this debate will prove nothing, demonstrate nothing and solve nothing. I hope that Bush rejects the offer because taking this guy on will only legitimize him well past the point of reasonability.
-
Just another hollow PR effort to stir the pot.
-
Can you imagine how many people world-wide would be watching this debate if it were to take place? It might be the most watched event in Earth's history?

I agree!
They can make fun of him all they want but it still doesn't change the fact that he was smarter than anyone the Dems could throw at him.
Don't agree?
Then why did he win both elections?
If the Dems were so much smarter they would have been able to beat him with no problems.
Didn't happen so that theory is out the window.

Middle east seems to be full of grandstanders. Of course those in the pulpits are only preachin' to the choir. Anyone fooolish enough to believe that Ahmadmanjihad wields more than a tiny percentage of the power Bush has is delusional. Of course there's no shortage of those in the middle east either.

I like this approach, Bush in the McGavin role and Ahmed...whatever... in the Mako role.
The Challenge
1970-USA
PLOT DESCRIPTION
This TV movie proposes that at some future date, America will be at loggerheads against some unnamed Asiatic power. Realizing that all-out nuclear war will decimate the planet, the two countries decide to boil down their argument to two combatants. Darren McGavin, an army malcontent, is the American "delegate', while martial-arts expert Mako is the Asian. They are place together on a small Pacific Island and ordered to duke it out on behalf of their countries--winner take all. According to the press release, both men learn "that there is a higher morality than temporary politics." The shamefaced director of The Challenge was able to hide behind the pseudonymous cognomen "Allan Smithee"; unfortunately Darren McGavin and Mako weren't offered that option. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I remember seeing this when it ran, actually. Not bad for 5 years old :)

As far as I know, Ahmadinejad speaks Farsi and Arabic but no English so any "debate" would have to go through the painful process of simultaneous translation. Not that such a debate will ever happen.
Incidentally, Ahmadinejad actually has a masters in Civil Engineering and PhD in "traffic and transportation engineering and planning." On another note, G.W.B.'s grades in University though far from stellar were better than both Kerry's and Gore's. But really that only goes to show that the days when America's politicians were some of the brighter bulbs in the box are long over.
Having read Ahmadinejad's blog and several of his translated speeches, he shows an excellent grasp of Shi 'ite theology and doctrine and an ability to play the "third world underdog nation vs. the big nasty colonial west" political card that he doesn't believe but realizes plays well in the world media.
What would be peronally amusing however, would be having a man who mentions Allah, the teaching of the Koran, the imminent advent of the 12th Imam and the ultimate destiny of Islam and the duty of all to embrace it, every third paragraph (for instance: "Oh Almighty God, please, we beg you to send us our Guardian- who You have promised us- soon and appoint us as His close companions." - From his latest Blog - a reference to the return of the hidden Imam) debating someone who would be forced to only speak American secularese and make mention of "God" in the most general and vague terms.
Ah well, it all a moot point really. In the end they'll get enough Uranium 235 or Plutonium to make several bombs. You can't have all that proven Pakistani, North Korean, Russian, and Chinese technology fueled by lots and lots of lovely oil money and not end up with a few working A-bombs at the end of the day, and since the West has adopted an "all carrots and no sticks" stance, my prediction is that Iran will soon be joining N.K. in the "be nice America, we can and will nuke your allies" club.
